The differences between regular and Hard mode, and how to combat

Added:

Hard mode on Competition is, as you may have already guessed, much harder. However, there are other notable differences. I will overview everything in this Hint. Here are the differences:

1. Stage 1 - Big Air. Early on, it's not too difficult to score the highest or second-highest amount of total points and start the race in first (or second) place. Provided you manage to do so, you should easily shake off any pursuers and win the following race. Take advantage of this, as later on (from around Round 5 and onwards), there's little chance of you scoring the highest amount of trick points. Boss, Kelly and Irin (and also Yaggi, if, for some reason, you're not playing as him) will be scoring exceptionally high points that you will be hard pressed to score more than. Ice Fang is the easiest Big Air course to score enough points to elevate to first place starting position.

2. Stage 2 - Downhill. You'll need a board at least as fast as All-Around Type 1 to perform well here. Freestyle boards are just too slow. Jin, Irin and Kelly also seem to travel at unnaturally fast speeds (fastest in the aforementioned order) when they're around you, so watch out. If you're not playing as him, Yaggi also does this. In courses such as Take It Easy and Pipeline Canyon, I strongly recommend you use the shortcuts, as they're quite easy to access and really help out a lot.

3. The other boarders are a lot faster in Hard mode and, instead of progressing in the rather robotic fashion that they did in regular Competition, they race more realistically and there's a lot more overtaking. Cindy, and to a slightly lesser extent Jin, often overtake boarders like Irin and Kelly in a race, despite starting in much lower positions due to poorer total trick scores, due to them being much faster. Nick and Jicchi can also accomplish this, and the two are definitely not going to finish 7th and 8th in every course like they do on the normal difficulty. Everyone seems to have no trouble in knocking you over, either. Additionally, in some courses, one particular boarder will always seem to race slightly faster than everyone else (such as Jicchi on Sunset Downhill, and Nick on Winding River).

4. Dive Into The Cave is the final course, so there are ten races overall. Therefore, unlike normal mode where you can get a point total no higher than 81, in Hard mode you can get a total of up to 90 points, although have fun trying to get that many.

The Boarders:

I'll list the boarders and what they are like if you are boarding as them (if you can) or boarding against them.

(1) Yaggi:

Boarding as Yaggi - Yaggi is easily the best of the four boarders you can choose from. He's fast enough, handles perfectly and is excellent at performing tricks. Use an All-Around Type 1 board. He should have no problem landing spins easily with it, so it's great for both tricks and racing.

Boarding against Yaggi - If you want to go for some variety and use one of the other boarders (which is about the only reason why you'd use them over Yaggi), Yaggi is the toughest CPU boarder after Boss, alway scoring a high amount of tricks and usually racing well. He will place in the top three (probably third) by the end of the competition, more often than not. He also races a little faster than he should if you're around him.

(2) Jin:

Boarding as Jin - Jin is the worst of the four characters you can choose from. He's the worst at tricks, but has the highest racing speed. However, he's also terrible at handling, so you'll be bumping into cliffsides and trees more often than with everyone else. Just use an Alpine Type 1 board and try and take over as many people as possible (it's easy to take over everyone with Jin on some of the easier courses), as later on in the competition Jin won't be beating anyone else in terms of trick scores anyway, unless they miss.

Boarding against Jin - He's fast, and when he's around you he races unrealistically fast, faster than anyone else. He often gets a high amount of points by the end of the competition, sometimes enough to place third. Take advantage of his mediocre trick scores (he probably won't be starting in a position higher than fourth) to start ahead far enough so that he won't catch up.

(3) Cindy:

Boarding as Cindy - Cindy is the second fastest racer of the four you can choose from, but is the second worst trick performer. She can perform tricks better than Jin, but worse than Yaggi and Irin. Her handling is as good as Yaggi's. Cindy's a good choice if you don't want to use Yaggi. What board you use depends on how you want to use her. If you want a balanced approach, use All-Around Type 1. However, if you want to take advantage of her speed, use an Alpine Type 1 board, in which case she will be a slightly slower but easier-to-handle Jin.

Boarding against Cindy - Cindy is usually the only character that can overtake Boss if they're both ahead or behind you, and they start near enough to each other. However, she's slower than most of the characters when she's around you, although it's difficult to shake her of your tail.

(4) Irin:

Boarding as Irin - Irin is basically a female version of Yaggi who's a little worse at performing tricks. The main issue with her is that she has trouble landing spins when using any All-Around boards for some reason, as opposed to Yaggi. She can land tricks well with an Alpine Type 1 board in 'Fakie' position. Although the lack of distance will lose you points, it boosts her speed for the race. She handles just as well as Yaggi and Cindy, so overall she can place first overall (which anyone but Jin can do). A good choice, but Yaggi is better.

Boarding against Irin - Like Jin, she can travel unnaturally fast when you're around her. However, if you can get ahead of her and shake her off, pretty much everyone else has a good chance of overtaking her if they're not too far behind. She's great at tricks, so she'll often start in a higher position.

(5) Boss

Boarding against Boss - He performs the best tricks and it's a pain to catch up to him. He loves knocking you over, too. However, he travels at his regular speed even when you're around him, so when he's behind you, he won't suddenly get ahead unless you lose speed somehow. Still, he'll always be in the top three, and he'll usually be first or second, depending on where you came. It should be noted that if you can overtake him in the last four courses and stay ahead, he'll often drop behind many of the other boarders.

(6) Jicchi

Boarding against Jicchi - Jicchi will rarely place in a starting position above 5th because he performs poorly at tricks and misses more often than any other character. His race points score is often the most erratic at the end of the competition as he sometimes races very well (he'll never finish below 4th on Sunset Downhill) and others very poorly. He races slightly faster than you, due to the speed of his board, when you're around him, and he's particularly difficult to shake off. However, he will very rarely finish third overall in the competition.

(7) Kelly

Boarding against Kelly - Kelly performs very well at tricks, and thus usually starts in a high position. She also travels at unnaturally high speeds when you're around her, much like Jin and Irin. However, if you can shake her off, she'll usually drop into 7th or 8th place, and therefore rarely places above 5th overall in the competition. She can get into the top three, though.

(8) Nick

Boarding against Nick - Nick is at about the same level as Cindy, Jin and Jicchi at tricks, and is slower than all three of them, so he'll often perform poorly in races. He can finish races in higher positions than he started in, though. He's also races slightly slower than any other character when you're around him. However, he has the lowest chance out of all the other characters to finish the competition in the top three.
