===============================================================================

Welcome to my Secret of Monkey Island guide (Special Edition!) - LucasArts has
provided us with an enhanced 1080p remake of this great game so if you haven't
bought it yet, go do it now.

This game is also out for the iPhone - so buy it if you have one!

This walkthrough will just go through important parts of the game. I encourage
you to actually talk with as many people as possible and explore to get the
maximum enjoyment experience. Additionally, if you don't want to spoil parts of
the game by reading this guide, try the 'H' button during the game which will
give you a hint of what to do next - if that's not enough, hit the 'H' button
again, you'll be given up to three hints.

For those of you who follow the guide, to help you keep track of what you have
or have not accomplished, I have included a full item list at the end of every
section for all the items obtained or used in that section.

is not the most efficient way to run through this game fast

                           Part One: The Three Trials
===============================================================================

When you first start out, you should walk to the right until you reach the
Scumm Bar. Just right click the door to open, and then walk right in. Chatting
with the various pirates will eventually lead you to the right side of the bar
where the "Important Looking Pirates" are sitting. Initiate a conversation with
them to find out about how to become a pirate. They'll mention three trials you
have to perform and then you can ask more about how to complete each one. When
you're done you'll see a door to the right that leads to the kitchen. Trying to
open it will make the cook angry. Just walk away and hang out by the fire until
the fat cook exits the kitchen leaving the door wide open - when this happens
sneak in there!

Once in there are 3 items you should acquire. The first two are in the kitchen,
the hunk of meat on the table, the pot underneath the table, and the fish
outside. When you near the door outside, a seagull will come down and block the
fish - in order to get it, talk to the other side of the plank causing the
opposite side where the seagull is to flip the bird upwards. Do this a few
times and the seagull will run away allowing you to collect the fish. When
you're done with this, you can now start on your three trials.

===============================================================================

o~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~o
>> While you can do the trials in any order, it is advised to NOT do this one
last as you'll lose out on a special cutscene - therefore I'm listing this
first
o~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~o

Our first step is the thievery trial where you need to steal the idol from the
governor's mansion. We'll explore some of the town on the way there first. As
you walk out the Scumm Bar and into the next screen, you'll see a guy with a
bird standing on a corner willing to sell you a map. Unfortunately you don't
have enough money yet so keep walking until you see 3 Men of low moral fiber
(pirates). Chatting with them about the other guy across the street will
eventually lead to them offering to give you the Minutes of their last pirate
meeting. Say you'll take it if they also give you 2 pieces of eight and they'll
give it to you.

After you're done with them, walk back towards the clock tower and into the
next area. While you walk someone will "Pssst" you from the alley. Walking in
there will prompt a guy named Sheriff Fester Shinetop to introduce himself.
Once done, walk back onto the main road and enter the building that looks like
a jail (on the left).

Inside there will be two cells, one with a rat, the other with a man that when
you approach, Guybrush will refuse to talk to him because of his breath. Walk
outside, and in the same area, go into the building on the right into the
store. Once in, you can buy breath mints from the shop keeper there for 1 piece
of eight. Use these mints back at the jail and give them to the prisoner and a
dialog will start. Once you've heard everything he's got to say (including an
appearance by our favorite sheriff), go back out and head back to the store.

Now, if you're new at playing this game, you'd probably haven't figured out
that the island is much more than just the town and no clue how to get out. So,
we'll take a tour with the help of the shopkeeper. Talk to him and ask him
about the sword master which will prompt him to tell you that he'll hike all
the way to her to ask if she'll see you. As soon as he exits, walk out the door
and start following him - and he'll eventually lead you to the cliff where you
started and then out to the island map and to the "fork". As you follow him
you'll see some yellow flowers along the path which if you get it will get you
the yellow petal. Combining the hunk of meat you currently have with the yellow
petal will result in the "meat with condiment" which you'll use very soon. At
this point you can continue following him to watch a cut-scene with the sword
master (you can't challenge her yet) or go back to town to finish the thievery
section.

Go all the way back to the jail and then go left some more until you get to the
area with the mansion in sight. Walking up there will present you with the
guard dogs barking at you. Here's where your meat will come in handy - toss it
over to them and let it do its magic. Walk into the mansion and go into the
first door you see to initiate a rather long and puzzling cut-scene. When the
cut-scene finishes, you'll find yourself with a few new items (staple remover,
manual of style, wax lips, and gopher repellent) and a statement saying that
in order to get the idol you need a file.

Walk back to the jail and give the gopher repellent to the prisoner and he'll
give you the cake in return. Perform the verb "open" on the cake to receive the
file inside. Walk back to the governor's mansion and jump into the hole in the
wall to initiate another puzzling cut-scene in which you finally get the idol!
More cut-scenes take place and you'll eventually find yourself under water tied
to the idol you just stole and various sharp objects around you. I'll save you
the time and just tell you to get out, just pick up the idol and put it in your
pocket.

Another ("hot") cut-scene takes place and then you'll have full control over
your character again with the prize in hand. Walk back to the Scumm Bar and
give the idol to the Important Looking Pirates and let's head on to the next
trial and hurry on with it cause it looks like you'll be getting more than just
the pirate title!

                            ---Art of Sword Fighting
===============================================================================

Our next step is to beat the Sword Master - but first we need a sword. If you
have already been to the shop, you'll know that the sword costs 100 pieces of
eight. No worries though as we'll get that fairly easily. Head back out the
village and goto the "clearing" near the center of the island (shown in the
image below). There you will find a circus tent and inside, the
famous Fettucini Brothers debating about who to get shot from the cannon. Once
in dialog, offer to be shot from the cannon. They'll ask if you have a helmet
and when you have control, just use the verb "give" on the pot you got earlier
from the kitchen to prove that you'll be safe. They'll fire you from the
cannon, and pay you 478 pieces of eight for it.

With a lump sum of money in hand, head back to the store in the village and
pick up the sword and show it to the shop keeper to initiate the dialog to buy
it for 100 pieces of eight. Now, before we see the Sword Master, let's go train
with the sword. Head back out of the village and head towards the house on the
southeastern part of the island (shown below).

Before you get there however, you'll have to cross a bridge with a troll on it.
He won't let you pass until you pay the toll: "I want something that will
attract attention but have no real importance". Luckily, if you examined the
items you currently have, you do have the item he needs - the fish or "red
herring" (GET IT? HAHA).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once you reach Captain Smirk's Big Body Pirate Gym, knock on the door and speak
with him. Be persistent about wanting to learn how to sword fight and after
offering 30 pieces of eight, he'll agree to train you. During the training he
shares with you the secret behind sword fighting - insults. Therefore you need
to go learn and practice as many as possible. Go to the world map and you'll
see one of 4 different types of pirates walking around: Bloodthirsty, Dirty
Rotten, Stinking, and Ugly. Enter dialogs with them by standing in their
walking path and then select "My name is Guybrush Threepwood, prepare to die."
to initiate combat.

By engaging in these fights, you can learn all the different combinations of
insults and retorts. There are 16 total - however, you only need to learn 12
before they admit you are ready to fight the Sword Master (after you win a duel
with them). If you do want to learn all 16 though, be prepared to work for it -
you will have to keep fighting them until by luck you get the ones you need.
The fights work by a point system: if you do an insult the pirate cannot
retort, you gain a point, otherwise he does with a correct retort and vice
versa. The first one to three points wins. In order to learn all the insults
and retorts you must have both used on you by the opposing pirates. The
following is a table of all the different combinations you can learn listed in
order of what you'll see on the screen:

After one of the pirates let you know that you're good enough to challenge the
Sword Master, go head to the Sword Master's home. If you haven't already, you
can have the shop keeper lead you there by asking him where she is. Otherwise
just walk there on the map.

Challenge the Sword Master to a fight and you'll enter a battle mode similar to
the previous ones except with two major twists:

> * Only the Sword Master will be giving insults - its your job to retort
(however her insults are different than the ones before even though the same
retorts can be used)
> * You will now be playing until someone reaches 5 points instead of 3

See below for a list of what to retort for each of her insults:

To prepare, first go buy the shovel from the store for 75 pieces of eight if
you haven't already. Then go to the Citizen of Melee standing at the corner
near the 3 men of low moral fiber who will ask you if you have a cousin named
Sven. Your reply should be "No, but I once had a barber named Dominique." and
he will sell you a map for 100 pieces of eight which you should have. It turns
out the map is actually dancing lessons, but the path is hidden in there (Back,
Left, Right, Left, Right, Back, Right, Left and finally Back). In this case,
"Back" means the back of the screen while left and right are self explanatory.
The starting point is the "fork" on the world map where we got the flower
before.

Once at the beginning of the fork, follow the directions through the forest.
You'll eventually hit the last part, head right a bit and see a big 'X' on the
ground. Take out your shovel and dig for that treasure! Once you have it, head
back to get some action from the governor and finish off your pirate tasks!

                            ---Goodbye Melee Island
===============================================================================

You'll soon find out you won't be getting laid anytime soon since LeChuck has
took the governor. The lookout will inform you of this bad news and leave you
with a note. Now the next step isn't probably obvious, but a simple press of
the 'H' button will inform you that you need to recruit a crew. The Sword
Master is one of them, but since we're in town, we can do the other one (and
more annoying one) first. Head to the Scumm Bar and find the hunk of meat in
the kitchen as well as a 5 mugs on the tables.

I recommend saving your game as with the awful controls for this part, it might
take a few tries. First go into the kitchen and find the barrel of grog on the
bottom left to fill a mug up. The mug o' grog will appear on the bottom right
of the screen and over time will deteriorate the mug, first into a melting mug,
then into a mug near death, and then finally into the useless pewter wad. The
idea here is when the mug turns into a mug near death, you need to quickly
"use" the mug on another and pour it in before it turns into a pewter wad (in
which case you have to do it over again). Your goal is to bring it over to the
jail and "use" the mug on the lock to let Otis (the prisoner) go. Good luck!

When you let him out, he'll run away at the thought of joining your crew, but
we'll deal with that later. Head over to the Voodoo Lady's house to the left of
the Citizen of Melee and talk to her if you haven't already. However, your real
purpose here is to pick up the rubber chicken in her house. We're done with the
village now, it's time to go pick up your crew mates and find a boat.

After you exit the village go straight to the Sword Master's house. Tell
her "The governors been KIDNAPPED!" and she'll agree to join your crew to save
her. Easy.

The second crew member requires the rubber chicken we got earlier. Head to the
"island" on the top part of the map to find him.

 Hook Island!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You'll see a sign pointing at hook island and a ladder leading up to a rope.
Climb up the ladder and "use" the rubber chicken on the rope to get across.
Once across enter the house to meet Meathook. Use the "The governors
been KIDNAPPED!" line on him and then say you need a crew. This will lead to
him asking you to face the monster and touch it. After you touch it he will
agree to joining you and you got 2 down! Let's go find the boat - once back
outside, use the rubber chicken to get across the rope again and then head to
the "lights" on the main island map.

When you arrive to Smilin' Stans Previously Owned Vessels, talk with Stan
about acquiring a boat. Since you don't have enough money, navigate the dialog
to where you want to buy one on credit and he'll hint at the store keeper back
at the village might be able to give you credit. Leave the store to receive a
business card and a magnetic compass from him and then head back to the village
and into the store keeper's shop.

Talk to him about credit and tell him you have a job, he'll go up and get the
note from the safe on the second floor. Pay close attention which direction the
handle turns as you'll need it later (memorize the pattern! he does it twice!).
When he comes back down, he won't give you the credit - so tell him you're
looking for the Sword Master and he'll leave the house. This is your chance to
grab the credit - go upstairs and copy the combination that you just saw. Push
means "right" or clockwise and Pull means "left" or counterclock wise. Execute
it and you'll receive the store keeper's note.

Head back to Stan and say you have credit now and then the negotiating process
begins! Start with asking about extras and then say "I think I can live
without that particular piece of junk." to all of the extras that he brings
up, until he starts repeating them. Then say the following:

"Enough about extras, already."

"Forget it. I don't need this boat anyway."

"Well, maybe you're right..."

"I'd like to make you an offer."

"5000! And that's my FINAL final offer!"

The boat is now yours! Head back to the village, grab the pamphlet, leaflet,
and brochure from Stan, and then Otis will finally join you by the docks to
complete your crew to three members! Now it's time to go to Monkey Island.

===============================================================================

So your newfound crew decides to just take it easy leaving you to do all the
work. In your room, pick up the feather pen and ink, and then open the drawer
to look inside to find a dusty book. When you read the book, you'll find
journal entries from the previous pirate who went to Monkey Island and a
bookmark.

Go out the cabin onto the main deck and climb up the nearby rope ladder to the
top where you'll see a skull and cross bones flag - the jolly roger. Pick it up
and go back down the rope. Our next step is the galley which is kind of hard to
find the entrance to due to the surroundings. You can just hit the 'H' button
until a yellow arrow appears or just look at the image below to find it.

Once in there, go down a second hatch and start looking around for things to
pick up - gunpowder in the barrels to the left, a giant piece of rope hanging
around, and fine wine in the chest on the bottom right.

Now walk back up the hatch and then in the first room, go down the back to the
kitchen where you'll find a pot, and inside the cupboard, a box of cereal.
"Open" the box of cereal to find a prize and then "open" the prize to find a
small key. Now go back to your own cabin, and use the small key on the wardrobe
to the right of the screen. Inside you'll find a chest which when opened, will
contain a piece of paper and some cinnamon sticks. Looking at the piece of
paper will reveal a recipe to Monkey Island!

recipe:

Guybrush passes out and then a cut-scene will occur and viola, you're at Monkey
Island. Go back up to the deck to discover this. Now to figure out how to get
over there...

Go back down to the galley and pick up some more gunpowder. Go back up and put
the giant piece of rope on the cannon and the gunpowder in the cannon nozzle.
Now to get the fire going, we're going to go back to the kitchen. Once there
toss the feather or dusty book onto the red hot fire and you get a flaming
mass. I guess you can see where this is going - don't worry you have
experience in this from the circus. Go back to the deck, use the pot (and
therefore lighting the fuse) and you're on your way to Monkey Island!

You're done with the very short Part 2 and on your way to Part 3!

o~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~o
>> Remember to "use" the pot when your cannon is set up and you have your
flaming mass - you will automatically put on the pot, light the fuse and get
into the cannon, otherwise if you manually light the fuse first, the cannon
will fire without you and you'll have to do it over again

                          Part 3: Under Monkey Island
===============================================================================

You start out with your ass on fire and head in the sand. When Herman Toothrot
finishes his dialog and the monkey runs away, pick up the nearby banana and
take a look at the note on the tree. There's nothing you can do for now, the
hints tell you to find a way to get more bananas out of the tree so let's go
find a way - exit to the background into the jungle (and island map).

Our next stop is to the northwest - walk that direction until you reach the
next screen of the island map. You'll see a volcano and inside on the northern
rim, you'll be looking for the "fort" (shown in the image below). Once there,
pick up the spyglass and the rope, and then "push" the cannon. Herman will
appear once again - after he talks to you and leaves, pick up the cannon ball
and the handful of gunpowder on the ground. You're done here so leave back to
the island map.

Go directly south to the beach which will lead you to another beach like where
you landed with a note (memo). Read it and Herman will likely show up to chat
with you again. When he leaves you're done so leave as well.

Now, walk directly east till you get to another section of the island map.
You'll see a spot where the river forks - walk there to the "river fork" (shown
in image below) - our next destination.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

At the river fork, you'll notice two things near the bridge across the river.
In the foreground you'll see a noteworthy rock sitting on top of a note (memo).
Take the rock which turns out to be flint and read the note. Well come back
here later - cross the bridge and head into the background to the footholds.
There's another note here as well plus a primitive art. "Pull" the primitive
art twice so its facing kind of toward the screen, and then walk up to the
background into another footholds. Once at the top, another dialog with Herman
happens.

At this point you should see a lone rock on the cliff behind you - "push" it
and it will hit the primitive art below launching a rock to the original beach
you landed on and hitting the banana tree - what are the chances??

Head back down to the bridge where you found the first note and flint and find
the dam holding up the water. If you can't find it, use the image below. You
need to blow this up. There are multiple ways to do it with the items you have,
I'll demonstrate one way - put the handful of gunpowder on the dam, and then
"open" the spyglass you got earlier to get the lens. You can now "use" the lens
on the sun to ignite the gunpowder, blowing up the rocks and letting the river
flow into the previously dry riverbed.

Leave to the island map, and walk east along the new river to the pond (shown
below). When you enter read the note (memo), talk to Herman, and pick up the
rope held by the skeleton on the ground. Then exit the pond.

Our next location is due east to the beach nearby (shown below). Once there,
read the note (memo) in the bottle which hints at the location of Herman's oars
- time to go get them!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Location of the pond and the third beach
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Head back south to the original beach you landed on and due north of there
there's a dark line across the jungle called the "Crack". Head into it. Once
there "use" one of the ropes on the strong branch then use your other rope on
the sturdy stump to get down to the bottom. At the bottom of the crack, grab
the oars, climb back up and exit. Go back to the original beach and pick up the
two bananas on the ground (the ones you knocked down earlier) and then "use"
the rowboat with your newfound oars to take off by boat!

Take the boat northeast to the next screen, around the circular island and
north into another screen. Here, land the boat on the nearby beach (shown
below) and read the note (memo) there before venturing off into the jungle.
Head northwest to the village on the map (shown below) and enter. Head to the
left until you see the fruit bowl and take the 2 bananas there. When you try to
exit you'll encounter the cannibals who will imprison you. In the hut, read the
note (memo), grab the skull and then "open" the loose floorboard on the ground.
You can't take the banana picker with you yet, so just exit using the hole from
opening the floor board. Once you get out of the village, get back in your boat
and go back to the original beach where you first landed. Head back into the
jungle and island map and you'll see a monkey running around. Click on the
monkey and then when you see him in the jungle, "give" him the 5 bananas that
you have which will cause him to start following you.

Now that you have your pet monkey, walk northeast to near the beach with the
bottle and walk further east to the small circular island (shown below) to the
"clearing". Â Walk right and you'll see two totem poles. Go to the left one
(the one with the nose) and "pull" the nose causing the gate to open.
Unfortunately it closes when you let go - you're monkey will come to your aid
and then you can go in. Once in, pick up the wimpy little idol on the ground
(it's the smallest one in the middle).

Now you gotta get back in your rowboat and row your way back north to the
cannibal village.

o~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~o
>> In order to make the rowboat go faster, click on a destination or edge of
screen - otherwise any other click will make the rowboat go much slower!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The clearing where you'll take your monkey friend
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When you get back to the village, go left and then right again to meet the
Cannibals. When you see them (you may have to go left then right first again),
talk to them and select "Don't eat me! I'll give you anything!". Give them the
wimpy little idol you just found and they'll leave off to the left opening the
door to the prison hut you were just in. Go in and grab the banana picker!

Once out, you'll find Herman Toothrot (conveniently) so trade the banana picker
for the Monkey Head Key - finally!

Head all the way back to the clearing where the giant monkey head was and use
your giant cotton swab monkey head key on its right ear. When you go
inside, and you press 'H', it says you'll need something to help you navigate
around - unfortunately, what you need is back at the village soooo...go all the
way back to the village and you'll encounter the cannibals again.

After chatting with them, you'll hear about the head of the navigator but
they'll refuse to give it to you. Now, when they turn their back on you go into
your inventory and find the leaflet that you got from Stan way back in Part I
(the one that says "how to get ahead in navigating"). Give this to the
Cannibals and they'll give you the head of the navigator and the necklace of
the navigator in return. Yes, this puzzle is one of the hardest in the game.

Head all the way back to the monkey head (again) and walk inside - you're
almost done!

===============================================================================
                               ---LeChuck's Ship
===============================================================================

Once you're in the monkey head, you'll see lots of lava, caves, and mushrooms,
walk right until you're in the catacombs and "use" the head of the navigator in
your inventory. Once it's out, just note the direction the head is facing on
each screen to guide yourself to the next screen (stand still to let it
re-orient itself in each screen instead of walking to find the right
direction). Sometimes you'll have to go back and forth on the same screen, but
don't worry, it won't be the same once you go back to the previous one.
Eventually, using the head's help, you'll find the ghost ship.

If you talked to the Cannibals about the head, you'll note that the necklace
around it makes it invisible to ghosts - just what you need to sneak your way
onto the ship! Talk to the head of the navigator, and ask to use the necklace.
Don't give up and use any threats in the dialog against it (dropkick it in the
lava!), and it'll eventually let you use it. Put it on by "using" the necklace
(you'll know it's on you by a bluish glow surrounding your body) and walk to
the ship!

First go left - right into a door to LeChuck's cabin where you'll see a key -
of course you can't grab it since LeChuck can "sense you" and block you.
Remember that magnetic compass Stan gave you? You can now "use" it to grab the
key un-noticed! I guess all his gifts to are useful after all. Go back out and
head right down into the hatch.

Once down there, head right into the next room with the ghost livestock, pick
up the ghost feather (next to the ghost chickens), and walk back to the
previous room with the sleeping ghost pirate. "Use" the ghost feather on the
pirate's feet twice (you can't do it until he's in the "relaxed" position as
shown below). This will cause him to drop the jug o' grog and your chance to
grab it!

- IMAGE: ----------------------------------------------------------------------
http://media.playhaven.com/hVK0oB9yB5lER9ceudnA1w/original/tickle.jpg
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Use the feather when he's in this position!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once you have your jug walk back into the room with the ghost animals -
you'll see a hatch on the ground to the right. "Use" the key on the hatch to
unlock it and go down. Your goal here is the vat of grease - however, one of
the ghost rats won't let you pass. "Use" the Jug o' Grog you just got on the
dish next to the rat to make it drink it and get drunk. Once you have
accomplished this, grab a glob of grease from the vat and head back up to the
main deck of the ship.

There's a door to the right of the hatch that we haven't gone into yet because
when opened, it makes a huge creak noise, which prompts a nearby pirate to
close it. Now that you have the glob of grease, "use" it on the door to enter
un-noticed.

Inside there's a sleeping guard next to some tools - go ahead and pick up the
ghost tools and walk back out. Head back into the room where the ghost animals
were and to the right of the hatch that leads down to the grease, you'll find a
glowing blue box that holds the voodoo root the cannibals need. "Use" the tools
on the box and you'll be able to get the voodoo root!

With your prize in hand, head back into the caves and thankfully, the game
takes you straight to the cannibals so you can give it to them. After a brief
chat with the three headed monkey, you'll be rewarded by the Cannibals with the
magic seltzer bottle. Exit the village, and you'll warp back to the ghost ship
only to find it gone! Bob explains that LeChuck plans to marry the governor and
your crew finally shows up. After a dialog with all of them, you all go back
with Bob to stop the wedding (and get more sunscreen).

                         Last Part: Guybrush Kicks Butt
===============================================================================

When you get back to Melee Island, head right and start talking with a ghost
pirate, during the dialog you'll eventually spray your seltzer (root beer)
bottle on him and you can continue. Walk towards the church and you'll
encounter another pirate to spray. Once you get there, things go wrong and
Guybrush starts taking a beating from one end of the island to the next.

Eventually you'll land on a soda machine in Stan's boatyard. After LeChuck
pulls you out, quickly pick up the nearby root beer bottle and spray it on him.
If you miss, you'll get another chance in another location (depending on where
he hits you next). When you finally do spray him, you win the game!
Congratulations and enjoy the ending :)
