001-General Information
---------------------------------------------------------

This is a walkthrough for the PC/Mac game called Nancy
Drew: The Captive Curse. This is an adventure game, in
which Nancy Drew goes to Germany and solves a mystery at
a haunted castle. This is the twenty-fourth game in the
Nancy Drew series.

If you want to contact me, e-mail
[email protected], but make the subject blank
if you do. If you want to reproduce this guide in some
fashion, you should contact me before doing so.

002-Video Guide
---------------------------------------------------------

Hey! Want to see how to beat the game instead of reading
about it? Well, I've got a video walkthrough, and you can
see it at...

http://www.youtube.com/playlist?p=PL111CA5B6744F95DE

The video comes complete with my commentary and such.

003-Characters
---------------------------------------------------------

Nancy Drew: Our hero! She's a super mystery solver, and
she's off to Germany to solve the mystery behind the
monster sightings at Castle Finster.

Karl: The burgermeister. He is in charge of the castle,
but he is more concerned with playing games than running
the castle properly.

Lukas: A boy whose father is the head of security. He
likes to play pranks.

Renate: An old woman who is staying at the castle. She is
a storyteller.

Anja: The castellan, who works at the gift shop. She is
the one who does most of the work in the castle.

Jordan: The woman from Castle Cast. She worked with Anja,
at Anja's previous job.

Markus: The man who owns the castle. He hired Nancy to
solve the mystery.

Frank Hardy: Nancy's friend and fellow detective. She can
call him in this game. His brother Joe gets mentioned,
but he doesn't have any speaking lines.

Ned Nickerson: Nancy's boyfriend. She can call him in
this game, and the two of them have a fight.

004-Walkthrough
---------------------------------------------------------

Click on the plane ticket, choose either Junior or Senior
Detective, and the game starts. A video of a girl being
attacked by a monster plays.

The game begins with Nancy Drew arriving at Castle
Finster. Press the doorbell on the right, and Lukas
answers the door. He forces Nancy to solve a matching
puzzle first.

Junior Mode: The leftmost monster in the bottom row, and
the second-from-the-right in the top row.

Senior Mode: The second-from-the-left in the top row and
the second-from-the-left in the bottom row.

Select the matches, then check the "check match" box at
the top to see if you got it right. Nancy sends this
puzzle back up to Lukas, and Karl appears. He asks her to
meet him in his office, on the second floor.

Head inside the castle. We have a small village here, but
everyone is scared, so they have locked their doors. The
only place Nancy can go inside is the Castle Finster.

The Castle Finster is kind of big, so let's start off by
figuring out where things are. Here, in the entrance
area, you can find Lukas. Without going up the stairs,
you can go inside the gift shop and meet Anja.

If you go up the stairs by the entrance, you can go
through the doors to reach the main part of the castle.
Here, you can go straight for several screens, in order
to reach the dining area. Renate, the old woman, stays
here.

In the main area of the castle, you have sets of stairs.
You can take the stairs and follow along them to reach
the area, which is directly above the dining area door.
This leads to Nancy's room.

Karl's office is above the gift shop. You reach it by
going through a hallway. Both ends the hallway open up
into the main area.

There are more hallways; one which connects the gift shop
to the main area (this has a branch hallway which leads
the glass room), and one that connects the main area to
the entrance.

Meeting Everyone
----------------

When Nancy first enters, she gets a phone call from Ned
Nickerson, her boyfriend. The two of them get into a
fight by the end of the phone call. Oh no!

I started off by talking to Renate about everything. She
has a sweet tooth, and she thinks the monster is going to
attack Nancy. Then, I went to Karl's office and talked to
him about everything.

In Karl's office, there is a picture of a sparrow on the
wall. Nancy notes that it is special in some way, and it
is; it is actually the same picture used in the sparrow
card in the Raid game.

There is a display is Karl's office, made up of cards.
Touch it, and the cards all fall down. Karl wants you to
fix it, using the card guide book to help.

The book that details the cards is below. Read it all the
way through, and Nancy once again notes that the
Professor Sparrow picture seems to be important.

Return to the Professor Sparrow picture. You can turn it
around and find a hidden key.

The solution to the card display puzzle is the same on
both junior and senior mode.

hunter

Solving this puzzle gives you a note from Markus to Karl.

When you talk to Karl, he wants you to play a game of
Raid, the game that he's making. It's a pretty simply
game, although it seems complicated at first. There are
four basic colors:

Red
Blue
Green
Orange

Now, each card has a red number, a blue number, a green
number and an orange number.

So, say you land on a red square. This means you get to
have a red battle with another player. Pick your
opponent, and pick which card to use. If the red number
on your card is higher than the red number on your
opponent's card, you win, and you move forward. If you
lose, you have to move backwards. If it's a tie, you stay
in place.

The game board has 50 squares, and about 70% of them are
red, blue, green or orange squares. So most of the time,
the game works like that.

The other three kinds of squares are...

White: When you land on this, you go forward to the next
white square.
Black: When you land on this, you go backward to the
previous black square.
Purple: When you land on this, you get to take a card
from another player.

If you land on a heart square, you get a free card. If
you land on a star square, you lose a card.

The way to win the game is by going to the final square,
the red square, and winning a battle. Play a round of the
game with Karl to figure out what it's like, and he will
give you some Euros for your trouble.

After talking with Karl, you should head to Nancy's room
to pick up the German/English dictionary on top of the
dresser near her bed. Use it on the note you found in
Karl's room (from fixing the card display) to learn that
Markus seems to be threatening Karl.

Once you finish talking with Karl, Lukas appears. When
you talk to Lukas, he makes you play a game of Monster.
You don't have to play this game if you don't want to,
and if you win a round, you get some Raid cards. Lukas
gives you a tutorial on the game to help you get started.

After meeting Lukas, you should probably meet the final
character of the game: Anja. She works in the gift shop.
Talk to her about everything.

Once you meet all four characters, Nancy should get a
phone call from Markus. He wants to speak with her.
Return to Nancy's room and call Markus. Talk to him about
everything to trigger an emergency situation.

Karl starts pounding on Nancy's door, with news that the
monster attacked the town. He takes her to an area with a
fire, as well as a partially destroyed door. Turn around
and get a bucket of water from the well. Then use the
bucket of water on the fire.

Nancy notices something strange on the door. Zoom in on
this and get the burr.

The next time Nancy goes into the castle, she will get a
phone call from Markus. He wants her to go to her room.
When this happens, Nancy has a bucket of water drop on
her head, thanks to Lukas. Someone has left out a dress
for her to change into, so go to Nancy's bed and change
into the dress.

You can solve the subplot about the burr now, and you can
finish the subplot about Nancy and Ned.

To finish up with Nancy and Ned, you need to talk to
Anja. She can give Nancy boyfriend advice. After this,
Ned will call Nancy, and Nancy and Ned will work things
out. You can later call Ned from Nancy's room and talk
with him.

The Burr, the Well and Hidden Passageways
-----------------------------------------

The subplot about the burr involves the shears, which you
find on top of one of the two sets of stairs in town.
These shears are dull, so you need to sharpen them. The
place to sharpen shears is in the glass room, which is
locked.

Go to the gift shop and read the book on display about
glass cutting. There's a hidden note inside. Talk to Anja
about the glass cutting room, and she says that no one is
allowed in right now. Only Karl and Anja have keys to the
room.

Go to Karl and ask him for the key. He gives it to Nancy.
Then, go the glass cutting room. In this room, you can
find various things, but right now, all you need to worry
about are those shears.

Near the door, there is a sharpener. It is not working
right now, because it's not plugged in. Plug in the
sharpener, then press the red button. Use the shears on
the sharpener to get them nice and sharp, then turn the
sharpener off.

With your sharp shears, leave the castle and go outside.
Past the castle gates, head out into the woods. Wander
around in this maze-like area until you find the burr
patch. This burr matches the one found on the door when
the monster attacked.

Use the sharp shears on the burrs to find the monster's
camp. Here in the camp, Nancy can find a flashlight and a
strange tile.

Return to the castle area. Use the flashlight on the
well, and Nancy finds a puzzle. She puts the tile she
just found on the puzzle. In this puzzle, you want to
move and rotate the tile pieces so the various tiles that
touch each other match.

If C is crown, F is flower, S is sword, E is eagle, R is
ring and Re is red bird, the two pieces on the left-hand
column are this:

S Re W
C F R

R F C
C R W

The middle column is:

Re W C
W C S

R C Re
C Re S

W Re R
S C W

And the right-hand column is:

S R F
Re F C

S F W
R R S

The solution is the same on junior and senior mode.

When you solve the puzzle, Nancy finds a hidden,
underground passageway. There are various things to find
in the passageways, including a map which is by a large
rock. To find it, turn right at the animal skull and
follow the path. Turn left at the diamond picture on the
wall to find a small area with the rock and the map.

The passageways have four entrances. The top one leads to
the dungeons, the bottom/right one leads to the forest,
the leftmost passage leads to Nancy's room, and the other
passage leads to the well.

What you should do in the passageways is explore and find
the various things. These include the newspapers (found
at the bottom of the map, towards the left) and the
special code (found on the map, near the bottom/right,
sticking out of a red machine).

The Dungeon
-----------

One of the exits to the hidden passageways leads to the
dungeon. Nancy can't go there yet, because she hasn't
found the dungeon. The way for Nancy to find the dungeon
is by snooping in Renate's bag.

Go to Renate and talk to her. She probably will get mad
at seeing Nancy dressed up like one of the monster's
victims, so she orders Nancy to change clothes. Return to
Nancy's room to find that Nancy's normal clothes have
been shredded, then return to Renate. You can now talk to
her.

During a conversation with Renate, she mentions that she
loves food, even though it makes her fall asleep. This is
a clue. Go down to the gift shop and buy some cake for
her, from the food machine shaped like a house. When you
give this cake to Renate, she falls asleep.

When she's asleep, you can snoop in her bag. This
triggers a puzzle, where you have to move things around
in her bag, to get at the gray object in the lower/right.
Right-click to rotate an object and try to avoid having
the objects fall over or make noise.

Basically, the way to solve this puzzle is by moving
everything on the right-hand part of the screen to the
left.

Once the puzzle is over, her bag is open. Read the book
and take the page from inside. Look at the other thing
for a puzzle.

This thing has four slots, which can be filled by seven
different colors. Your goal is to find out which four
colors are needed, and which spaces they go in. The same
color can be used more than once in the answer, and the
correct solution is randomly determined each time you
play the game.

What I like to do is figure out the four colors I need
first, then I figure out the order the colors go in.

Solving this puzzle results in Nancy finding the map to
the dungeons. She sees that it is connected to the glass-
blowing room. Simply go there, put up the shield, then
open the fire door. Use the tongs (from the table in this
room) on the lever to open the hidden passage to the
dungeon.

Go to the dungeons and look around. There's not much here
to do besides pick up a piece of paper.

Security Booth
--------------

The castle has a security booth, in case you didn't know.
Let's see if we can find it and solve some puzzles there.

Talk to Lukas. He wants Nancy to distract Karl, as part
of a prank. Agree to help Lukas, then talk to Karl about
the prank. Return to Lukas and tell him Karl is
distracted.

Lukas leaves, which lets Nancy take the piece of paper on
the ground here. It belongs to Lukas, and it is a note
from his father. There is a puzzle on the paper. Simply
move the letters around in the columns to form words.

"To open the security booth, play the glockenspiel. Notes
are hidden around the castle. Find them and then play
them in the order of the list. The hidden locations are
listed below."

Nancy needs to visit all five of these locations to get
the notes.

Upstairs portrait of the young lady this is the picture
near Nancy's room - G
Florist initial this is on the shop that was broken
into - D
hallway bookstand this is near Karl's office - B
castle's gate bell this is the doorbell outside the
castle gate - G
glass furnace inside the glass-blowing furnace itself -
A

A piece of paper found on the stairs in the village area
tells you about glockenspiels. From left to right, the
notes on the bottom row go like this:

CDEFGABC
12345678

Play the notes G, D, B, G and A. That is, play notes 5,
2, 7, 5 and 6. This opens the security booth.

The security booth has three areas. From left to right,
we have the security alarm area, the security camera
area, and the decoder area.

Go to the camera area. Open it up with the red dial
(found on the table near Lukas, the one with a book on
it). You encounter a puzzle where you have to charge up
all the lights.

Junior Mode:

9 14 14 6

Senior Mode:

9 14

When you charge up the lights, the security cameras turn
on. Nancy sees that Renate is doing something to the
clocks in the gift shop.

Go to the security alarm area. Use the German/English
dictionary to translate the notes. It seems that this
machine sends out an alert whenever the monster is
sighted. Click on the thing to sync Nancy's phone up with
the machine.

The third area in the security booth is the decoder area.
It needs two dials. Let's find them now, shall we?

The first dial you need is found by solving the tile
puzzle, outside of Karl's office. This requires getting
two tiles. One tile is inside the gray cabinet in the
glass-blowing room, and another is inside the stained
glass window in the dining area (where Renate is).

To solve the tile puzzle, collect the two missing tiles.
They will be added to the puzzle. Then, rearrange the
tiles so they perfectly match up with the picture. Make
sure the tiles overlap each other in the correct way.
Right-click to rotate a tile and click on a tile to pick
it up. Solving the tile puzzle gets you a dial.

The second dial is a bit harder to find. It involves
snooping in Karl's office. Trip the security alarm in
Karl's office, and he will leave his office. Go there,
and use the key from behind the sparrow painting to open
his drawer.

Inside the drawer, you find a key for Anja's shop. Go
back to the security booth, and this time, trip Anja's
alarm. Go to the shop and open the drawer behind the
counter (where Anja usually stands) using the key.

Inside the drawer, you find emails from Marcus and a
clock windup key. Examine the clocks, because earlier you
saw Renate examining them. What was Renate doing to the
clocks? It is uncertain, but under the clocks, Nancy
finds a blue envelope.

Go to the area outside of Karl's office. On a table here,
you find a book which is a brief history of Castle
Finster. Use the piece of paper from Renate on the book
to get a hidden message: "Third clock from left nineteen
twenty-one".

Return to the gift shop. Use the clock windup key from
Anja's desk to set the third clock from the left to 7:21.
This opens up a compartment with the third dial.

Return to the security room and put the dials into the
decoder machine. Time to decode the two secret messages:
the one from the book in the gift shop and the one from
the hidden passageways.

Each message has three pictures on it. These pictures
match the German vocabulary sections in the newspapers.
For example, the first note has a sun, a moon and a
comet. In German, these are "die Sonne", "der Mond" and
"der Komet".

Therefore, S M K are the three letters needed to decode
the sun/moon/comet picture. Set the dials to those
letters, then type out the letters on the note. Nancy
ends up getting the decoded message.

Now, there are three newspapers in this game which have
German vocabulary on them. Two are in the hidden
passageways (in the newspaper area) and one is in the
dining area, across from Renate. Nancy will write down
the vocabulary in her observations notebook, so you don't
have to memorize them or write them down.

As said earlier, the first note is unlocked with S M K.
It reads "Karl's Day Planner: 8 2 6 1".

The second note is unlocked with F B R. It reads "The
Freiherr's daughter is step one".

To follow the Freiherr Daughter clue, go to the painting
of her near Nancy's room. Nancy wants to see an undamaged
version of the painting. Go to the gift shop and buy a
postcard of the painting. Remove the sticker from the
postcard, and there you go!

For the Karl's day planner puzzle, trip the security
alarm for Karl's office to get him to leave. Go to his
room, and open his desk with the key from the sparrow
painting. Open the day planner by setting it to 8 2 6 and
1.

Use the dictionary to translate the planner and read it.
There are five things he has written, in different
colors.

4. Little snow white - blue
1. The Sea Hare - blue
3. The Gold Children - red
2. Rumplestilskin - yellow
5. The donkey -- green

These refer to Raid cards. Take the last one for example.
The donkey is a card, with a green number of 9.
Therefore, nine is fifth. When you solve all five cards,
you get the number sequence 5 13 15 11 9.

In Karl's room, there is a locked cabinet. Turn the
handle to find a keypad. Insert 5, then press enter. Do
the same for the other numbers. The cabinet opens.

Look in Anja's file. Use the dictionary to translate the
file to learn she worked for Castle Cast.

Return to Nancy's room. Call Castle Cast. They won't talk
to Nancy. Call Markus, and he will call them. Call Castle
Cast again to learn that Anja's resume is made up of a
bunch of lies.

Monster Sighting
----------------

Usually after you get all three dials, you get a message
on Nancy's phone about a monster sighting. This doesn't
happen unless you sync up her phone with the security
booth, of course. Go outside and Nancy chases after the
monster. She eventually gets trapped in the gates.

Turn to the side. Behind the loose brick is a key. Use
the key on the wooden thing on the wall to discover a
series of three slider puzzles.

Junior Mode:

1. Move the leftmost piece up all the way. Move the two
side-by-side left-and-right pieces left. Move the
bottom/right piece up, and move the blue piece all the
way right.

2. Move the upper/left piece down. Move the left left-
and-right block all the way left. Move the piece touching
the green block up, then move the green block right
twice. Move the leftmost up-and-down block down all the
way. Move the block above the green block left all the
way.

Move all of the up-and-down blocks as far down as
possible. Move the up/right left-and-right block all the
way to the left. Now, move all of the up-and-down blocks
as far up as possible, and move the green block right.

3. Move the red block right. Move the leftmost up-and-
down block down once. Move the bottom two left-and-right
blocks left, so they are both in the bottom/left corner.

There is an up-and-down block to the right of the red
block. Move this one down all the way. Move the left-and-
right block that is in the top row left all the way, then
move the block that is above the red block up.

There is only one left-and-right block you can move. Move
it all the way left, so it is above the red block. Move
the up-and-down block in the top row down all the way,
then move the left-and-right block that is in the
upper/right corner left all the way.

Move the larger up-and-down block which is in the
rightmost column up. Then, move the red block right to
the exit.

Senior Mode:

1. Move the left-and-right block in the second row right.
Move the up-and-down block in the leftmost column up.
Move the left-and-right block in the row above the blue
block to the left.

Move all the up-and-down blocks down all the way. Move
all the left-and-right blocks left all the way. Move all
the up-and-down blocks up all the way, and move the blue
block to the right.

2. Move the block above the green block left, and move
all the other left-and-right blocks right. Move the block
right of the green block up three times. Move the green
block right once, and move the block above the green
block right once. Move the left-and-right piece in the
bottom/left corner right once. Move the up-and-down block
in the leftmost column down into the corner.

Move the piece above the green block left. Move the up-
and-down piece above the green block down. There are two
left-and-right blocks that are side-by-side. Move the
left one left all the way. Move the up-and-down piece
above the green block up all the way. Move the up-and-
down piece right of the green block down all the way.

There is a left-and-right piece in the third-from-the-top
row. Move this all the way left. Move all the up-and-down
pieces up, then move the green block all the way to the
right.

3. Move the up-and-down piece right of the red block
down. Move all the left-and-right blocks left all the
way. Move all the up-and-down blocks up all the way.

There are two left-and-right blocks in the bottom row.
Move the right one right all the way. Move the two up-
and-down blocks right of the red block down, and move the
red block right all the way.

Monster Sighting #2
-------------------

When you confront Anja about her resume, it will trigger
the second monster sighting. Go to the security booth to
see that the monster is inside the glass-blowing room.

Go to that room, then look at the door. There is a
spilled can of sand near the door, leaving footprints.
Follow the footprints that the monster left, by going
forward, up the stairs.

Nancy runs into the monster. It's Lukas, wearing a
costume! The real monster appears shortly afterwards.

Go to Karl and tell him about Lukas. Karl is convinced
that Lukas is the monster. Unless Nancy can get proof
about the real monster, then Lukas will be punished!

Fortunately, finding this proof is easy. Examine the
castle map to note that the monster is going to appear at
the tree in the woods. Go to that area, and take a
picture of the monster with Nancy's cell phone. Also,
pick up the final coded message.

Return to the castle. Show the picture to Karl and decode
the message with MDE to learn that the monster is
planning on kidnapping Nancy. Oh no!

Wrapping Things Up
------------------

There are a few loose ends that need to be tied up before
the endgame sequence begins. I just thought I'd list some
of them here.

First, you should collect all four scraps of paper. One
is by the fireplace in Nancy's room. One is in the
dungeon. One is in the owl book inside Renate's bag. One
is in the bottom/left corner of the hidden passageways.

The final piece of paper, the one found in the
passageways, is crucial. It has a picture of a boulder.
Return to the monster's camp in the woods, and Nancy
recognizes that boulder.

You can now look at the dirt below the boulder. Use the
small shovel (from the glass-blowing room) on the dirt
here until Nancy finds a necklace. It's the necklace that
the Freiherr's daughter had!

This necklace fits into the groove in the dungeon. It
will open up the trapdoor or the hidden passageways,
depending on which way you turn it.

The other major thing you have to do is find a scarf.
Return to the hidden passageways, and the scarf is over
the pieces of wood. Give this scarf to Renate to learn
that the scarf belongs to her.

Endgame Sequence
----------------

The endgame sequence begins with a phone call from Karl.
He says that something terrible has happened, and he
demands that Nancy return to his office at once.

Go to Karl. He says that Lukas has disappeared. Go to the
dungeons, and Lukas is in a cell. You need to unlock the
cell to set him free.

Junior Mode:

You have four buttons and many pegs here. From left to
right, I call them buttons 1, 2, 3 and 4. Each button
makes certain pegs appear or disappear. Press the second
button, so you're at a setup with only three pegs.

Press button #3, then start the slider. When it has
passed the first column of pegs, press button #3 again.

When the slider is about to hit the rightmost peg, hit
button 4. When it has passed that column, hit button 4
again.

Senior Mode:

Press buttons 3 and 4. Start the slider.

When the slider passes column 2, press button 2. When it
passes column 3, press button 2 again. When it passes
column 4, press button 3. When it passes column 5, press
button 1. When it passes column 6, press button 1.

Lukas is freed. He runs away, but the door locks behind
him. Return to the dungeons, and Nancy will be attacked
by the monster.

The monster throws Nancy down through the trap door. On
one of the walls here, there is a puzzle concerning the
pieces of paper that Nancy found. Each piece of paper has
a page number and letters on it. The postcard with the
Freiherr's daughter counts as part of this puzzle,
because it has letters on it.

Here's a small chart that lists all the letters, page
numbers, and the pictures on the pages:

1. Necklace EN no page number
2. Boulder TK page 11
3. Well - OM page 17
4. Shield - ME page 19
5. Trapdoor - N page 25

Junior Mode and Senior Mode differ slightly, but in both
modes, your goal is to press the five pictures listed
above. That is, press the necklace, then the boulder,
then the well, then the shield, and then the trapdoor.

Another puzzle appears. You want to spell out the word
"entkommen" on this slider puzzle.

Junior Mode:

Say that the topmost slot is #1, and you number off all
the slots in clockwise fashion.

Put N in 7. Put M in 5. Put O in 3. Put T in 1. Put E in
8. Put E in 6. Put M in 4. Put K in 2. Put N in 2.

Senior Mode:

Say that the topmost slot is #1, and you number off all
the slots in clockwise fashion.

Put * in 9. Put E in 6. Put O in 3. Put N in 11. Put * in
8. Put M in 5. Put K in 2. Put E in 10. Put N in 7. Put M
in 4. Put T in 4.

Other solutions are possible, because you can start from
any place on the board. Anyway, once the puzzle is over,
Nancy finds herself back in the hidden passageways.

Go to the topmost exit, the one that leads back to the
dungeons. There is a bag here, which wasn't there before.
Look through it to find some evidence which proves who
the real culprit is.

Go up the stairs to see the monster. Nancy is given the
opportunity to name the culprit. Pick the second name on
the list.

The culprit will explain his or her actions. When you can
control Nancy again, turn to the wall. Put the necklace
in the groove on the wall, and turn it counter-clockwise.
This opens the trapdoor, which the culprit was foolishly
standing on.

The culprit falls through the trapdoor, and Nancy goes to
get the police. Case solved!
