Q. What is Lode Runner 2?

It is an incredible isometric action/puzzle game for the PC, that builds off
the roots of its prequel, Lode Runner. If you don't have it yet, a) you should
probably pick up a copy right now, and b) why the heck are you reading this?

Q. What are the Doughnuts?

The Doughnuts, aka the Yums, are shaped as odd little glazed doughnuts, rotating
on the spot, never moving. The LR2 manual says that "The Yum is usually tucked
away and hidden in a level, or just sitting there occupying some space that
seems impossible to reach." It also goes on to say that the Doughnut is NEVER
necessary to complete a stage; however it does not go on to say what their
effect is.

Q. Okay then, so what do they do?

The Doughnuts have only two known effects, which take place among collecting
them. These are:

a) A gong sounds, followed by some evil laughter, and
b) You get a minor sense of accomplishment when you figure out how to collect
them.

That's it. Nobody knows if they have any other effects. Something may happen
once all the doughnuts are found in the course of one full single-player
campaign, though.

Q. But Yakra, if you know how to get all the doughnuts, why don't you do it
yourself and find out?

Because I have no way of knowing whether I've found all the doughnuts yet. I
probably haven't. These are just the ones that I know exist, and after a lot of
Googling, it appears nobody else has found any beyond these ones either.

Q. If you had to take a guess, what would you think they do?

This might be a little disappointing, but my personal theory is that collecting
them all opens either the "Mall World" or the "Alien World". However, here's
the catch; these worlds were cut from the final game, likely due to time
constraints. What I think is that one of those two worlds was going to be a
main game world, with a Doughnut or three of its own. Now, collecting all of
the Doughnuts, including the ones in the nonexistent sixth world, would open up
the equally nonexistent seventh world. But seeing as how the sixth world was
cut, it is therefore impossible to unlock the seventh world (or lack thereof).

But even still, it's fun figuring out how to get them. But if you just can't
figure out how to get one and want it *that* badly, I'll help.

JUNGLE WORLD

14: Jungle Town

Behind the tall ladder is an extra life and a light switch; flip the switch.
Now see the elevated stone path next to the UFO? Dig or bomb the leftmost tile
of that path (I prefer to dig), and walk straight through the hole that it
leaves, across an invisible path, all the way out to the Doughnut. Get back
quick, or else the block will reappear and you'll be trapped.

21: Big Blocks

Pick up the bomb, then dig down so that you end up taking out the block between
the three brown plates and the alcove with two gold pieces. You have to be very
quick, or else you'll get trapped. Now collect the gold and dig out the space
above the Doughnut. Drop the bomb in the hole you just made to take out the
Blind Monks, then jump in and grab the Doughnut. To get out, walk to the SW end
of the chamber, then walk NW. Pick up the bomb and gas can here. Walk SW and
set off the bomb at the end of the corridor (make sure you're holding the gas
can); if you did it right, it'll blast open a route to a hidden ladder. Climb
up and complete the rest of the level.

WACKY WORLD

15: Think First

This is similar to the one in Jungle Town, but you have to be a lot quicker.
Dig out the block directly NW of the two gold eggs in the east corner of the
level. Now QUICKLY walk NE, turn a corner NW (careful, no guardrails), and grab
the Doughnut. Now head back the way you came, and you should just barely make
it out alive. Whew...

GEAR WORLD

15: IX

This was the first Doughnut that I figured out how to get. From the start, you
can see a switch in an alcove below you. Dig down to the switch and flip it.
You should see a ladder appear near the east corner of the level. Also, an
invisible floor appears beneath the plexiglass. Now quickly dig the hole in
front of the ladder, climb down, get the Doughnut, and climb back up. Be very
careful of the monks; they can easily trap you inside if you aren't careful.

MONA WORLD

10: Twin Towers

This here is the easiest known Doughnut in the game. In the leftmost tower,
there's a little alcove you can jump in of the leftmost yellow ladder. In the
SE space of that alcove, there's a switch on the NE wall. Flip it, and you'll
see a block disappear a few spaces below you. Get back on the ladder and slide
down to that point, and jump in. It's a secret tunnel; follow it and you'll get
the Doughnut.

INDUSTRIAL WORLD

11: Big Box of Boxes

This one was the hardest to figure out. The Doughnut is being guarded by three
Monks; but there seems to be no way to take 'em out, right? Wrong.

Dig the block that's three spaces from the SW side and two spaces from the SE
side. From there, dig four more spaces in a row so that you can dig down to
the alcove with three gold bars in a row. Once you've finished, take a step SE,
dig NW, step SW, dig NE. Jump NE into the hole, dig NW. Jump NW into the hole
and run NW to get a Beach Ball. Dig the southeastern block of the passage to
escape. Now simply dig down to the chamber with the Doughnut, activating the
Beach Ball before you jump in. Collect the Doughnut and jump SE onto the
platform below.

Those are all the doughnuts that are currently known. There might be others,
there might not. Stay tuned; more may be found in the near future.
