FAQ DESCRIPTION:

Like all of my optimized straightforward walkthrus, this FAQ is a complete
walkthru for the game that has been optimized and organized to make it as fast
and easy as possible to complete the game. I don't give any reference-style
information or encourage you to do unnecessary things. In true walkthru fashion,
I just tell you the answers without explaining or rationalizing them.

VERSION 1.0 (8/23/2009) NOTES AND CREDITS:

This is the original release of this FAQ, so I have no special notes or credits
to report yet.

NOTE: This FAQ was written while playing the version of Cutthroats that came
with the Lost Treasures of Infocom II package that was released in 1992 by
Activision. As far as I know, everything will be the same for other game
versions.


*** STEP 1: Make a deal with Johnny Red. ***

Get out of bed (GET UP) and wind your wrist watch (WIND WATCH) so it'll keep
running. Open the dresser and take the Mariners' Trust passbook from it, then
open the bedroom door and go north, down, and north to reach the Wharf Road. Go
east four times and south to enter the Shanty.

Use the SIT command to sit down, then order yourself some food and water (ORDER
FOOD AND WATER). Eat the food and drink the water, then wait using the Z command
until Johnny asks if you're interested in the deal. Type YES, then leave your
chair (GET UP) and go north to the Wharf Road.

To get to the local bank, go southeast, south twice, southwest, and north.
You'll probably get there before it opens, so keep trying to go north until you
can. Once you're inside, take all $603 out of your account (WITHDRAW $603), then
drop the passbook. Go south, northeast, north twice, and northwest to return to
the Wharf Road, then go west four times, southwest twice, and then northwest to
reach the site of the second meeting.

Save your game, then wait until Johnny pulls out either a gold coin or a dinner
plate. Be sure to remember which one it is, since it determines which of the two
lootable shipwrecks you'll be going after. (If you've already done one and you
get it again, restore your save and try again until you get the other one.) Wait
one more time, and Johnny will tell you to meet him at Point Lookout at 10:45.

To get there, go southeast, northeast twice, east four times, southeast, south
twice, and southeast. You'll arrive early, so wait until Johnny shows up. Type
YES when he asks if you brought the money, then show it to him (SHOW MONEY).
He'll then ask if the treasure is more than 200 feet deep. If he showed you a
gold coin earlier, type YES. Otherwise, type NO.


*** STEP 2: Prepare for the voyage. ***

Follow Johnny to Outfitters Int'l, then wait until he orders some stuff and
tells you how much you need to chip in. Pay the amount he names with the PAY
command, as in PAY $438, then buy and/or rent the stuff that you'll need with
the BUY and RENT commands.

If Johnny showed you the gold coin earlier, you'll just need to buy a flashlight
and shark repellent. Otherwise, you'll need to buy those two items plus a C
battery, a tube of putty, and a portable electromagnet. You'll also need to rent
a small air compressor.

Go north, east, and south to enter the Shanty again, then sit down and order
some more water. Drink it, then wait for Johnny to tell Pete and the Weasel to
be at the ship you're sailing in at 2:30. Get up, then wait until the Weasel
leaves the Shanty. Follow him until he meets with McGinty at the ferry landing.

Wait until the Weasel gives McGinty something and boards the ferry, then wait
some more until McGinty leaves. Follow him along to his salvage office, then go
back north to the road. Go east, south twice, and west to get behind the salvage
office, then look through its small window (LOOK THROUGH WINDOW).

If you see McGinty sitting at his desk, use the G command until you no longer
see him there. Open the window and go north to enter his office, then get the
envelope that's on the desk. Go south, east, and north twice to return to the
Wharf Road.

If Johnny showed you a dinner plate earlier, you'll need to get the scuba gear
from your room, so go west twice, south, up, and south to get back there. Get
everything from the doorless closet (GET ALL FROM CLOSET), then return to where
you were by going north, down, north, and east twice.

Go north to the wharf, then go east to the Mary Margaret if Johnny showed you a
gold coin earlier, and west to the Night Wind otherwise. Go north to the fore
deck, then down to the crew's quarters. Hide the envelope you stole from McGinty
so Weasel can't find it (HIDE ENVELOPE UNDER BUNK), then go north to find the
storage locker.

Wait there until the Outfitters Int'l delivery boy drops off the stuff you
ordered earlier, then go south twice to the galley. Pete the Rat should have
already shown up, which means that you can drink water in the galley from now on
to satisfy your thirst. Do so now, then go south twice more to the captain's
cabin.

Wait until Johnny asks for the minutes of the latitude and longitude. If he
showed you a gold coin earlier, use these two commands: LATITUDE IS 40.
LONGITUDE IS 45. Otherwise, it'll be LATITUDE IS 25. LONGITUDE IS 25. After you
do that, wait until Johnny says to get some sleep, then go north three times to
return to the crew's quarters.

Lie down and wait until you fall asleep. When you wake up, you'll be at the site
of the shipwreck that you're going to be searching for treasure. If Johnny
showed you the gold coin earlier, go to Step 3a. Otherwise, go to Step 3b.


*** STEP 3a: Loot the Sao Vera. ***

Get up and wind your watch, then retrieve the envelope that you hid earlier (GET
ENVELOPE). Save your game in case the Weasel sees you, then go south three times
to the captain's cabin. Give the envelope to Johnny, then go north twice to the
galley. Eat some food and drink some water, then go north twice to the storage
locker.

Get the diving suit, the flashlight, and the shark repellent, then go south
three times and up to the aft deck. Wear the diving suit, then connect the
compressor's air hose to the suit (ATTACH HOSE TO SUIT). Turn the compressor on
to get the air flowing, then use the DIVE command to get started.

Open the shark repellent to start repelling sharks right away, then turn the
flashlight on so you can see. Keep going down until you reach the Sao Vera's top
deck, then go down again to the middle deck. Go south and get an iron bar, then
go south twice more. Use the bar to get the bunks out of the way (MOVE BUNKS
WITH BAR), then wedge them in place so they won't fall onto your air hose (WEDGE
BAR UNDER BUNKS).

Go south and down to get below decks, then go north to a giant squid's sleeping
area. To avoid being hugged to death by it, go north again right away. Push the
oak chest through the west hole (PUSH CHEST WEST), then wait if necessary for an
orange line to appear. Tie the orange line to the oak chest (TIE LINE TO CHEST),
then pull on the line (PULL LINE) to signal Johnny to pull it up.

Go east and north to find some skeletons, then examine them to find a scabbard.
Examine it to find a sword, then take it. Go north to find a maple chest, then
push it south. Use the G command three times to get yourself and the chest to
the room with the ladder, then climb onto it (GET ON CHEST) and go up to return
to the middle deck.

Go north twice to return to the room with a cask, then push it north twice.
Stand on it like you did the chest, then use your sword to cut the broken mast's
rope loose (CUT ROPE WITH SWORD). Drop the sword, then climb the rope to return
to the top deck. All you have to do then is keep going up until you make it back
to your ship and win the game.


*** STEP 3b: Loot the S.S. Leviathan. ***

Get up and wind your watch, then retrieve the envelope that you hid earlier (GET
ENVELOPE). Save your game in case the Weasel sees you, then go south three times
to the captain's cabin. Give the envelope to Johnny, then go north twice to the
galley. Eat some food and drink some water, then go north twice to the storage
locker.

You still have the scuba gear in your inventory, so put it on now by using the
WEAR command with each of its four parts (wet suit, flippers, air tank, and
diving mask). Now you'll be able to pick up the flashlight, shark repellent, C
battery, tube of putty, portable electromagnet, and portable drill.

Open up the drill's panel (OPEN DRILL), insert the C battery (PUT BATTERY INTO
DRILL), then close the panel. Remove the air tank, then use it with the small
air compressor to fill it (FILL TANK WITH COMPRESSOR), then wear it again. Go
south three times and up to the aft deck, then use the DIVE command to get
started.

Open the shark repellent to start repelling sharks right away, then turn the
flashlight on so you can see. Keep going down until you reach the Leviathan's
top deck, then go down twice more to the below decks area. Go south, open a
door, and go south again to find a mine locker. Put your portable electromagnet
on the loose mine (PUT MAGNET ON MINE), then turn it on (TURN MAGNET ON) and
drop it (DROP MAGNET).

Go up, then remove your air tank so you can go south twice to the room with the
safe. To open it, turn the drill on, drill the safe, then turn the drill off.
Get the glass case from the safe, then go north twice and wear the air tank
again. Go down, north, and up to the room with air, then turn the drill on and
drill the glass case to let the water out of it.

Plug the case's hole by opening the tube of putty (OPEN TUBE) and putting it on
the hole (PUT GLOB ON HOLE). The rare stamps in the case are now safe from water
damage, so go down and north, then up until you return to your ship and win the
game.
