OPENING NOTES [OPN]
This is the first game that I ever beat by myself without any walkthroughs. So,
I thought I'd celebrate the occasion by writing my first walkthrough. If you're
still left with questions after the walkthrough or have any corrections then
please email me at [email protected]. Be sure to include the words American
Girl and walkthrough in the subject or I might delete it.
So, this is version 1.0 on December 10, 2008. Hopefully I won't have to update
but I'm not going to say never. Hope you like it and any feedback remember my
email address is right up there. It took me a little over 5 hours to write this
walkthrough and I'm very proud of it. Hope you like it.
This game is relatively complex, with lots of steps. However, it's also
beatable in one sitting. Good luck and hope you enjoy the game! Go for Great!

CONTROLS [CTRL]
Walk using the arrow keys or by clicking with your mouse.
Enter a building by clicking the door with your mouse.
Talk to somebody by clicking them with your mouse.
Show somebody something by clicking on the item in your inventory and then
clicking on the person.
---
SKATING [SKTG]
When skating, you only have to do something when you're spinning or jumping.
At the top of the screen there are nine blue bubbles with a yellow circle
around one of them and arrows in a couple of them, or more depending on how
many spins or jumps you have. The yellow circle moves left to right at a quick
pace.
When the yellow circle surrounds a blue bubble that has an arrow in it you have
a limited amount of time to click the arrow key on your keyboard that
corresponds with the arrow in the bubble. In Regionals, there might be two
arrows in one bubble. You must hit both arrows.
For instance, if the yellow circle is around a bubble with an up arrow, you
have to hit the up arrow key on your keyboard.

TIPS [TIPS]
- I would recommend if you want to know what's going on to turn up the volume
because they don't caption it at the very beginning.
- Explore. The key to the game is exploring the small town and finding out
where everything is.
- Talk to everybody and finish all conversations. You should only stop talking
when the only option left is 'Talk to you later' or else you might miss
something important.
- You don't have to do the tasks in order. You have to go to the library for
more than one of the tasks and you also have to talk to the other girls for
more than one. To avoid making multiple trips if you don't have to, decide on a
game plan ahead of time. You also don't have to do the tasks in the order I
tell them. As I said before, explore.
---
THE WINTER SHOW BASICS [TWSB]
- Meet your coach at the ice arena, through the skating rink doors. She will
tell you that you will be doing a solo in the winter show. There are four main
components to the winter show. 1. Design your skating routine. 2. Pick out the
music to skate to. 3. Pick out a costume. 4. Practice.
- There are two other girls participating in the winter show, your best friend,
Anya, and one of your rivals, Vanessa Knowles.
---
WINTER SHOW SKATES [WSSS]
After you show your skates to the coach, she will tell you that they need to be
sharpened.
1. Drop off your skates at the skate shop.
2. Leave and then come back.
3. Ask Mona how much the skates will cost to be sharpened. She will tell you
that she will sharpen them for free if you can answer a trivia question: What's
the only skating jump that begins with the skater moving FORWARD?
4. Go to the new arrivals shelf in the library.
5. Click on the book 'Basics of Figure Skating'. Keep clicking through the
pages until you find the Axel jump or until Mia stops. She then makes a note of
it in her diary.
6. Go back to the skate shop and use the 'Axel jump note' on Mona. She will
then return your skates.
7. Show Coach your newly sharpened skates.
---
WINTER SHOW COSTUME [WSCS]
1. Find your mother in Nelda's Notions and tell her that you need a costume for
the Winter Show. She will tell you the budget is tight but that we'll work
something out. She'll also tell you that you'll want something original so
you'll have to find out what the other girls are wearing.
2. Ask Anya what she will be wearing. You can find her in the front door of her
house, next door to yours. Ask to borrow her picture and she will give it to
you.
3. In the locker room, talk to Vanessa. She will give you a photo of Coach
Schubert at the Olympics, fallen on the ice with a bloody nose.
4. Show the photo to Coach Schubert. She will tell you to do a little research
and that it's not one of her proudest moments but every skater falls.
5. Look in the new arrivals shelf at the library. You can now look in the book
'Great Olympic Skating Moments'. Look in the book until you find Emma Schubert,
or until Mia stops. Learn that Coach Schubert finished skating even with a
bloody nose and won a silver medal, plus an honor for good sportsmanship.
6. Show Vanessa a picture you found in the library book.
7. Ask Vanessa about the costume and she will give you a sketch.
8. Use both sketches on Mom. She's still at Nelda's Notions. Ask her what she
thinks about your costume and she'll show you a soft green costume that you
like.
9. Leave and come back.
10. Ask about the costume. Mom will tell you she just finished and will give it
to you.
11. Give it to Coach.
---
WINTER SHOW MUSIC [WSMS]
The coach will hum the tune of the music she think you should use for the
winter show to you (you don't need to remember it) and then tell you to do some
research to find the name of the song.
1. Go to the girls' locker room.
2. Use your locker combination on your locker (locker 9)
3. Grab library card.
4. Ask Vanessa what music she is using. She will tell you she is using the
'Turkish March' by Mozart.
5. Ask Anya what music she is using. You can find her in the front yard of her
house next door to you. She will tell you she is using 'Badinerie' by Bach.
6. Go inside your house and click on the computer. You will realize that your
portable music player is missing and you have to find it.
7. Go to the library and click on the shelf with the new music.
8. Click on the different CD until you find yours. You can skip Mozart and
Bach. You will recognize the music when you click on Tchaikovsky and will use a
waltz from Swan Lake.
9. Use the CD on Miss Voss, the librarian. Then use your library card on Miss
Voss. She will tell you the CD is due in 14 days although you won't need it
that long.
10. Go to Angelo's Perfect Pizza and ask your brother Perry if he took your
portable music player. When he says that he had, get it back from him.
11. Go back to your house and use the music player on the docking station. This
is the little black box next to the computer. If you try to use it on the
computer it won't work.
12. Use the CD on the computer.
13. Give the CD to Coach Schubert.
---
WINTER SHOW PROGRAM [WSPG]
The coach will tell you for the winter show program that you need 2 different
spins, 2 different jumps, and it needs to be the same time as your music. Mia
already knows all the steps so you just need to finish everything else and then
design the routine.
1. Tell Coach you're ready to practice.
2. You will be taken to a screen that shows a few moves. Mia currently knows
two spins and two jumps so, according to the rules, you MUST use both spins and
both jumps. Listen to the advice given by Coach Schubert when putting in spins,
jumps, and other moves because you have to have a full program.
3. Keep putting in moves until the percentage is at 100%. This is approximately
10-14 moves depending on what you choose to put in. The percentage bar will be
green when you have enough moves.
4. Rehearse. To learn how to skate see above.
---
OTHER WINTER SHOW TASKS [OWST]
You will see the ice resurfacer stuck on the ice with Bob Gunderson working on
it in the skating rink. To start practice you'll need the ice resurfaced and
the machine out of the way.
1. Talk to Bob Gunderson. He will tell you that he needs a torque wrench to fix
'The Beast' and get it out of the way.
2. Find your dad in the garage and ask him if he has a torque wrench.
3. Take the torque wrench to Bob Gunderson. He fixes 'The Beast' quickly and
returns the tool to you.
4. Return the tool to your father.
---
THE WINTER SHOW [TWTS]
After you've finished rehearsing and everything else it's time for the winter
show! Congratulations on getting this far. It's not over yet, not by a long
way.
1. Talk to Coach about your last practice. If she says your spins and jumps are
both good then it's time for the winter show. Sometimes it's not your fault if
they're not good. Blame Mia. Or blame her skates. Either way, practice again
until she says they're perfect.
2. Tell her thanks for the advice. Sometimes this confuses me because I rarely
say 'Talk to you later' but you have to say thanks for the advice.
3. Tell her you're ready for the Winter Show.
4. Skate your heart out and go for great! Afterwards, get ready for regionals.
---
REGIONALS BASICS [RGLB]
Regionals is almost exactly the same as the Winter Show. It will be Mia, Anya,
and Vanessa again. Only you have to find music and a costume in a different way
than you did last time. Good luck and go for great!
---
REGIONALS SKATES [RGSS]
After you show your skates to Coach she will tell you that they need to be
replaced because you have outgrown them.
1. Take the skates to Mrs. Gunderson in the skate shop.
2. Show her the old skates. She will tell you she will accept them as trade-in
and will try to find you some new skates if you answer the trivia question: Who
won the State Skating Regionals in 1969?
3. Look in the library on the new arrivals shelf for 'Memories on Ice'. Flip
the pages until you find the list of regionals winners or until Mia stops you.
You will find out that the 1969 winner was a girl named Mona Newsom.
4. Go back to the skate shop and use the '69 regionals note on Mona.
5. Mona will give you skates that used to belong to Mona Newsom. She will then
tell you that she is Mona Newsom and to take care of the skates.
6. Use the skates on Coach Schubert.
---
REGIONALS COSTUME [RGCS]
Unfortunately since your mom broke her leg slipping on some ice and can't work,
finding a costume is going to be next to impossible.
1. Talk to Mom at home and tell her that you need to have a new costume. She
suggests talking to Nelda.
2. Go talk to Nelda at Nelda's Notions. She will tell you that there's
something you can do to earn the money for your costume.
3. You are now dressed as Zuzu the Squirrel, the official mascot of Nelda's
Notions. Nelda tells you that you have to sing the Nelda's Notions jingle
(Nelda's Notions, we're just nuts about sewing) to ten different people. I list
11 people and their location. You can sing to all 11 if you'd like but you get
no bonus.
- Skip can be found in Hank's Garage
- Rick can be found behind the house
- Anya can be found next door to Mia's house
- Mom can be found in Mia's living room
- Dad can be found in the garage
- Miss Voss can be found in the library
- Perry can be found in Angelo's Perfect Pizza
- Mona can be found in the skate shop
- Old Man Munsel can be found outside the locker rooms
- Coach Schubert can be found in the skating rink
- Vanessa can be found in the skating rink
4. Take this time to do the music section because it requires you to be in the
Zuzu costume. Once done with going into the boy's locker room, you can go back
to Nelda's.
5. Use Zuzu list on Nelda. If you sang to more than 10 people she will give you
the material for your costume.
6. Go back home and use the material on Mom.
7. Leave and come back.
8. Talk to Mom and she will say she's just completing your costume.
9. Go back to the arena and use the costume on Coach Schubert.
---
REGIONALS MUSIC [RGMS]
1. Ask Coach Schubert about what music to use for Regionals. She will tell you
to choose a different nationality than Vanessa or Anya's choice. You will also
figure out that one of your pesky brothers stole your headphones.
2. Ask Vanessa about her music choice. She can be found in the ice rink. You
will be required to play the 'Rink Sweep' game to hear the song playing. You
only need to play for a second and Mia will know the tune.
3. Ask Anya at her house. She will tell you she is using 'Fur Elise' by
Beethoven.
4. Ask Perry at Angelo's Perfect Pizza whether he stole your headphones. He
will tell you he did but he left them in his locker at the ice rink and can't
go get them because he can't leave work. He will then give you his locker
combination to get it for him.
5. While in the Zuzu costume (see the Regionals Music section) go to the
skating arena and ask Old Man Munsel if Zuzu can go into the boy's locker room.
He will tell you yes.
6. Use the locker combination on locker number 12. It will open and you can
grab the headphones.
7. Go to the library and to the music shelf. Click through the music until you
find Vanessa's choice. She will be using 'Carmen' by Bizet.
8. Go to the new arrival book shelf and click 'Masters of Classical Music'.
Flip through the pages until you reach the end.
9. Go back to the music shelf and click through all the CDs. When you're done,
click Strauss' CD again because that will be the one you'll use. Strauss is
Austrian, so he's a different nationality from the artists that Anya and
Vanessa are using, and you haven't used him before. You will be using the 'Blue
Danube' waltz.
10. Check the CD out same as you did last level.
11. Load the music onto your portable music player, again, same as you did last
level.
12. Use the CD on Coach Schubert at the arena.
---
REGIONALS PROGRAM [RGPM]
The Regionals program works roughly the same as the Winter Show program, it's
just longer. You will now need 4 spins and 5 jumps, so you have to use all the
moves that Mia knows. Depending on how many moves you do, you will have about
20 or so moves.
This time it's harder, with two arrows to press for some moves. Just remember
to practice and you'll get it.
After you're done practicing just do the same thing as you did for the Winter
Show. Go for Great and good luck!
---
OTHER REGIONALS TASKS [ORGT]
When you tell Coach that you're ready to practice for Regionals she tells you
there's lots of new rules. And unfortunately for you, she forgot the rulebook
in her car. And even more unfortunately for you, the car is at Hank's garage
being repaired.
1. Go to the garage and talk to your brother Skip.
2. Use the permission note on Skip. Even though he could do you a favor he says
he wants something in return, such as lunch.
3. Go find your brother Rick out behind your house. He will then bribe you with
a pizza coupon to help clear snow off the lake. It opens up the mini-game
Snowflakes. You can play now or you can end the game after a second. He still
gives you the coupon.
4. Go to Angelo's perfect pizza and use the coupon on Perry. He wraps up a
piece of Perfect Pepperoni.
5. Go back to the garage and use the pizza on Skip. Talk to him and he'll tell
you he'll get it in a minute.
6. Leave and come back.
7. Talk to Skip and he'll give you the rulebook.
8. Go back to the arena and use the rulebook on Coach Schubert.
---
MINI-GAMES [MNGS]
There are two mini-games that you can play. 'Snowflakes' which is available
behind Mia's house in both the Winter Show and the Regionals levels and 'Rink
Sweep' which is only available at the skating rink in the Regionals levels.
R I N K S W E E P
Your rival, Vanessa, is trying to skate on the ice rink but the beads on her
dress keep coming off and it's making it hard for her to skate. Help her clear
the beads off the ice by playing this mini-game.
To clear the beads, you need to create groups of 3 or more of the same color.
Click where you want the next bead to go. If the beads reach the center of the
rink then you lose.
S N O W F L A K E S
Your brother, Rick, is getting ready to play hockey with friends but the pond
is covered with snow. Help him clear off the snow by playing this mini-game.
The point of the game is to clear the area completely. To clear an area,
connect three or more of the same snowflakes. Then the area will change color
and it's clear, earning you points. Get bonus points by clearing the snow fast.
