When you collect weapons and other stuff, don't collect the items with the gray lettering. They are of low price and are mostly broken, worn, or rusty.
To get easy xp to level your guy up, just keep attacking the skeletons that pop up from the dark obilisk. They never stop coming and you can attack them as long as you desire.
