Question for The Sims Makin Magic

The Spellbound Wand Charger had me put in ingredients for nothing. Why? How do I get them back. Also, I had a huge house with a billion things, and then when I got back from Magic Town , I had nothing not even my Dragon's Nest

When you put ingredients the charger, it has to be in the spell book or you waste them and can't get them back, but if you choose to empty it out you still don't get them back.
