On freepaly mode (Wanmami Island) how do you get a pet... And what type of pets can you get?

You can befriend an ape at one of the spots you visit and it will give you the chance to 'adopt' it. I think the same may be true for a hyena, which you can find more often at night.

You can also get a hyenna if you go to the lost city of some tribe on free play at the 2nd blue buble in the night and day time thing and there and if you wait there for a few minutes ther should be a few hyennas and if you ply with it for a while then finally it willl ask if you want to adopt it

I thought I saw a penguin visit my house right after I adopted my hyena and ape. Then it was suddenly gone? Are there penguins in sims 2 castaway stories?

You can use a potion to summon penguins, but they wont stay as pets.
