Question for The Sims 2: Open for Business

Can I build a restaurant on the same lot as a home? If so under what category do I buy the podium and Stove?

Nope. It's not possible. I've tried, the restaurant podium isn't shown in the catalogs on residential lots. I've looked for it and can't find it and believe me if I can't find something, it's not there. (I don't give up easily.) The stove isn't there either. We could go to some download sites and request that someone unlock the items for residential use. I really wanted a home restaurant too. What I did on some of my home lots is make a bakery instead.

This is old, but I will add it for when other people find this. You can have a restaurant as a home business, and here is how:

1. You must start with a residential lot. Build the building on it or not, but it MUST be residentially zoned.
2. If you already have a lot in mind and there is a family in the home, evict them
3. Go to the lot and type in the cheat changelotzoning community,
and then save and exit to neighborhood
4. Go to the lot and purchase everything you need for a restaurant, I.e. Podium, that special chef stove, then save and exit to neighborhood
5. Now go back into the lot, and type in changelotzoning residential, save and exit to neighborhood
6. Move in a family
7. You will notice there is a maitre'd, chef, and one or two servers, so first start a home business, and then type in Move_Objects on and delete them (unless you want to use them for your restaurant, just keep in mind you have no control over them whatsoever)

You have to keep saving and going back to neighborhood view to change the lot zoning the correct way, or else you will have problems. Also, don't try changing the lot zoning while a family it living on the lot, it will corrupt your game. You can also add a pastry display and a cash register to make even more money, but be careful where you place them, or it will disrupt the flow of your restaurant.
