Question for The Sims 2

I've been playing this game since it was introduced in 2004, and I have made a habit of saving my games to a DVD disk on a monthly basis with no problem at all. Now, for some reason, whenever I try to save my game files to a disk, I get an "invalid index" response and am unable to complete the project. Also, recently I tried to use a flash drive on which to save my games files, but the saving process always stops when it comes to my custom made neighborhood (I don't use player made custom content...the neighborhood is just one that I created instead of using one of the ones given in the game). Is there any reason why this issue has occurred, and more importantly, what can I do (if anything) to fix it?
