Well to ad to what merien said
You can also activate trigers by doing exactly as you said you would in the trigers like
Creating certen amunts of units
Or certen types of units
Or do the same with bildings or resorces
Or simpaly by wating a certen amunt of time
So bacicly you do as you or the triger in the map editer spesifid and the triger will activate
