Mechanics should automatically go to fix a ride that's broken down. If they aren't, then there's two reasons I can think of why that might be:

1) If you've assigned your mechanics patrol areas, make sure there is a mechanic whose patrol area covers the ride! Mechanics enter all rides through the ride EXIT. Their patrol area needs to cover the exit and at least one square of path in front of it.
If you've got this set up right, then find out where your mechanic actually is and take a good look at the path system and patrol area to make sure they're not stuck. Mechanics will never walk outside their patrol area for any reason. This means that if even ONE square on the path they'd have to follow to reach the broken ride is NOT marked as part of their patrol area, they'll be unable to reach the ride. It's very easy to miss a square by accident.

2) Is this ride a rollercoaster that has crashed? If so, you need to reset it manually. Open the ride's information window, and look for the traffic light you use to open, close and test the right. Double-chick the red light, and it should reset the ride. (This is also very useful if you catch a rollercoaster that's about to crash, or if you have a ride that's stalled - all the trains will vanish, and the guests will get off safely at the exit.)

I'm playing RCT2 and on some rides a mechanic just won't go in if the attraction is defect, they will go to the exithouse and when arrived they immediately turn around . Otherwise when a ride has crashed for some reason, the mechanic will do the same, but this time, after it, you can choose to open or test ride while still having the status "crashed!". Another time, if an attraction gets defect, an individual will freeze with one leg out at the entrance and there isn't anyway to remove that person. If a mechanic arrives at the entrance he will just bump against that freezing person and turn around, away from the defect attraction.

By the way, I work with patrol areas, cause it's a busy park with lot's of attractions, so I already checked if the patrol areas cover all the stations and pathways leading to it.

I must be some kind of awful program bug, I hope there is a fix for it.

Greet, Thomas.
