When a fawn is first born the mother will find a secure place such as under a bush for the fawn to hide. The mother will come back to her fawn to nurse and then leave it in the protection of the brush because the little one is not ready to run. Once the fawn is a few weeks old it will have more of a scent (less scent means more protection) and be more able to keep up with mother.
