Graphics set to fast, render distance to short, and downloading optifine and turning it's settings down could help.

Well, if you are wondering (I know you are :P) I am going to help you with this answer. So, let me tell you. The best setting is to turn Advanced Open GL, or whatever it is called off. Render Distance set on Normal. It is because Normal is the normal setting, and that works best in-game. Well, servers are a different story, they lagg-out so badly! Back to the main subject, so, just set the Gamerule doFiretick to true. It will let the Fire not spread (I highly recommend it). Turn the Gamerule, mobGriefing to false. Those settings will no cause a lot lagg, and will not make it crash. Hope it helps! If it does not, then try getting SuperAntiSpyware and do a Custom Scan on the MineCraft folder.
