Actually if you saw the cd of the beginning on how it all started, thats how you will find out.Some Ballas in a green sabre did a drive-by at CJs moms house and killed her.

O.k. You have to relly pay attention to the little cut-scene things. They really explain some questions about the game! In the mission "Drive-thru" Smoke, Ryder and Sweet are tellin CJ what had happened. Smoke said that they was goin for Sweet then I think Ryder said They saw a Green Sabre doin the work and then speedin away! And then Sweet said that he didn't know she was hit 'till it was all over! When the ballas, started to hate the grove, the ballas were trying to kill sweet, so cj mom, was trying to save sweet, so she jumped in front of sweet, to save him from the bullet. it says it in the drive-thru mission

i think its the Ballas gang, since Ryder and Smoke need an opening to run the drug factory but CJ returns change everything, they know CJ will follow everything Sweet tells him so in the end they tried to kill Sweet in an ambush, since its impossible to kill the hero CJ..

The ballas did it, at the start, they drive down and through Grove Street and do a drive-by with an Uzi. Then they drive away. Thats why CJ came home from Liberty City, I think.
