All though I have come across some animal crates just doing adventures. By far the majority of the crates that I've come across,I have gotten by clicking on house and either clicking on battle nearby or random battle.The crates appear randomly,so just keep fighting and the crates will eventually appear.

They have appeared to me, but the monsters in them suck, so you don't need to worry about even coming across one.
