It will be to your advantage to place units and defensive buildings on top of hills and mountains, the reason being, when they are placed in these locations, they can fire much farther than units and defensive buildings on normal elevations.

This is very useful for defending bases or vital areas of the map, and is also useful for attacking the strong defenses of an enemy base.
