Outer Wilds Cheats and Tips

Take a look at our Outer Wilds Cheats and Tips to get help in this action-adventure game where you play a character that explores a solar system stuck in a 22-minute time loop that ends with the star going supernova. The game is available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Switch, and PC.

In Outer Wilds, you are encouraged to learn why the star goes supernova by exploring and uncovering secrets of a race known as the Nomai, who previously colonized the solar system hundreds of thousands of years ago. Many areas of the game are protected by logic puzzles which can often only be solved through learning more of the Nomai and speaking to fellow space explorers.

  • Always Check the Ships Log

When your character dies in Outer Wilds the information that you learned from the previous cycle is recorded in the ship's logs so make sure you refer to these logs at any point of the game if you need to remember what happened a few cycles back.

The ship's log also gives you some information on what has not yet been uncovered which indicates there is more to be figured out. If you need extra help you can always use the interactive ship log as a guide.

  • Talk to Everyone

You will be given the option to talk to the locals at the starting village. Resist the temptation to just ignore them as some of these villagers will provide valuable tutorials for you to learn that will help you progress in the game.

  • Explore and Learn

Your character will inevitably die as this is part of the game. The solar system is set on a 22-minute timer and when time is up a supernova will occur which will wipe out the entire system and make you respawn back at Timber Hearth. During each 22-minute cycle, you need to explore and learn as much as possible.

Even though you are made to respawn you will not lose all your progress. A ship's log is kept which retains all the information that you learned from past cycles which you can refer to help figure things out.

  • Visit Every Planet

Before you dive into a planet it is recommended that you first visit the surface of every planet so you become familiar with the solar system. Planets contain hidden secrets but these don't need to be figured out right away.

  • Explore a Different Location

In Outer Wilds, you will encounter plenty of mysteries and puzzles and there will be times when you will not have enough information to solve them or just don't understand what to do. When this happens you should move to a new location as there is always the possibility you will discover a bit of information there that will prove to be useful when you return to the area you were struggling to figure out.

  • Use the Scout Launcher First

To avoid dying unnecessarily before the 22-minute timer runs out you should deploy your scout launcher before exploring any new areas. The scout launcher is a launchable little probe you can launch from your ship to take pictures which can then be used to help safely explore hazardous environments.

  • Read Everything

Scattered throughout the solar system you will find various plaques and papers. You must study these as they provide a variety of clues that will help you learn about the history of the solar system and what you should do next in the game.

  • Practice Flying

Flying your ship in Outer Wilds is not easy when you first take flight and there is a fair chance you may crash land and damage your ship. It is recommended that before you launch into space you practice how to fly at the starting village or on a flat surface of a planet.

  • Repair your Ship if you Crash

Don't forget to repair your ship if you crash. Repairing your ship is fast and simple and it does not require materials. All you need to do to repair your ship is check the screen that is to the left of the pilot's seat to find out what needs to be repaired and then walk up to the ship part and interact to repair it.
