********************* Ancient Ys Vanished Omen **
                   ******************************
Ys: Ancient Ys Vanished Omen was the first title in Falcom's long running Ys
series. Ys was developed for the NEC PC-8801 by Falcom in 1987, then ported
to numerous systems after that. The first release of the title in North
America was the Sega Master System port. This was later remade for the Turbo
CD, along with the first sequel Ys II: Ancient Ys Vanished Omen - The Final
Chapter, as Ys Book I & II. Twenty years later the title was remade again on
the Nintendo DS. This guide covers that version of the game, specifically the
North American release contained in the compilation Legacy of Ys. This guide
only covers the first Ys title, which can either be found in that compilation
or imported as the Japanese original that contained only Ys DS.

This guide supports the search function. To use it, hit Ctrl+F to bring up the
search bar in internet explorer and type in the corresponding title below to

*********************** Ancient Ys Vanished Omen **
                     ******************************
Ancient Ys Vanished Omen begins with Adol Christin becoming shipwrecked on the
island of Esteria. He is washed ashore and almost killed my monsters, but is
saved by the local militia of Minea. He awakens shortly after this incident in
the care of the town physician.
____________________
[PB1] Port Barbado
____________________
Begin by leaving the hospital and walking around town. You need to talk to
every person in town to proceed further, so knock that out now. Once you do,
enter the grey brick warehouse and talk to Slaghf. Talk to him about every one
of his topics before selecting "Nothing" to end the conversation. Assuming you
talked to everyone now, he will give you a Short Sword. Equip this and head
north out of town.
______________
[PN1] Plains
______________
Follow the path available, defeating enemies as you go. There is only one path
available right now, so just follow it to Minea. Take note that if you are
hurt, you can stop moving to regain health; that is, standing still and not
attacking will allow you to slowly regain some of your health back. You also
want to have a total of at least 1100 gold before you arrive, which you should
get just from fighting enemies that block your path.
_____________
[MN1] Minea
_____________
Your first goal in Minea is to get some new equipment, specifically Chain Mail
and a Small Shield. You want to buy these from Deos in the southeastern corner
of the city. There are two other shops in town, although neither is probably
of use to you yet since you will most likely be broke after buying those two
pieces. Their prices are as follows:
  *******************************************************************
  *  Rosetti's Weapons * Deos' Armor - Armor * Deos' Armor - Shield *
  *******************************************************************
  * Short Sword * 500  * Chain Mail * 400    * Small Shield  * 700  *
  * Long Sword  * 2000 * Plate Mail * 2000   * Medium Shield * 2000 *
  * Talwarl     * 5000 * Reflex     * 5000   * Large Shield  * 6000 *
  *******************************************************************
  *    Pim's Pawn Shop   *
  ************************
  * Sapphire Ring * 1000 *
  * Wing          * 200  *
  * Mirror        * 500  *
  ************************
Once you have the Chain Mail and the Small Shield, equip them and head to the
southwestern corner of town and talk to Sarah inside her fortune telling shop.
Tell her you have not heard of the Book of Ys. She will briefly explain their
significance and ask you to recover the first tome from the temple in the
mountains. Accept and she will give you a Crystal, then implore you to travel
to Zeptik first and speak with her aunt.
______________
[PN2] Plains
______________
Head north for the first screen. On the second screen, you want to go to the
northeast area of the map to continue on. On the third screen, head to the
immediate east across a small bridge. On the fourth screen, go north as far as
you can, then cut to the east until you come to the sign pointing to Zeptik.
Go off the east side of the screen to enter the village.
______________________
[ZP1] Zeptik Village
______________________
The first house directly in front of you as you enter Zeptik is the mayor's
home. Speak with him to learn that the symbol of Zeptik, a set of Silver
Bells, has been stolen. He will ask for your help in recovering them, which
you can offer. Before going after the thieves, however, enter the house in the
far northeast corner of the village to talk to Jevah, Sarah's aunt. She will
give you the Temple Key, allowing entry into the Temple of Salmon containing
the first Book of Ys. Once you have talked to both of these people, take the
path north out of the village.
_____________________
[MP1] Mountain Path
_____________________
Head to the northeast, going around the temple, and follow the path to a small
hideout. Go inside and talk to the head thief. "Negotiate" with him and he
will claim he has not stolen the Silver Bells of Zeptik, in fact claiming that
someone has stolen all the silver from them as well. Exit the hideout and head
back to the Temple of Salmon just north of Zeptik.
________________________
[TS1] Temple of Salmon
________________________
Inside the temple, move to the east and approach the gold statue. It will
teleport you to a maze-like room. Use the in-game map to navigate to the upper
northeast corner to find a chest containing a Ruby. Work your way around the
room to the far northwest corner. Approach the marked door and use the temple
key to open it. Inside is your first boss battle. If you are not at the level
I have recommended, this battle will be a lot harder. The strategy will remain
the same, there will just be less room for error. If you need to, go outside
the temple and grind on the blue knights wandering about.
  **************************************************
  * Boss Battle * Jenocres * Recommended Level: 10 *
  ***************************************************************************
  * Immediately you will see pillars of fire, three on each side of the *
  * room, shooting towards the middle. Jenocres will teleport around inside *
  * this maelstrom of fire. You need to wait for the fire to start to pull *
  * back after each burst, then rush in and hit Jenocres once and run back *
  * to safety. If she is in the fire area too deep, do not run in, just *
  * wait for her to teleport closer on the next burst. You will most likely *
  * get hit on the way back, but if you are level ten or higher you will do *
  * more damage than her fire. Touching Jenocres will also not hurt you, so *
  * ram right into her as you attack. *
  ***************************************************************************
You can only stop moving to heal on this floor, so keep that in mind as you
take damage in the proceeding floors. The spiders on these floors are worth a
lot more experience and gold than any other enemy so far, if you're in the
mood for grinding. Ignore the ghosts for now as they have a strong defense
against physical attacks. When you are ready, take the archway down to level
B1. For now, take the western wall south and go down to level B2. Follow the
path south, then take the second north entrance (with the angel statues) to
find the Cell Key. Take the next north entrance and open the two chests it
leads to, acquiring the chest key and the Silver Bells. Return to B1 and move
to the southeastern corner. Open the chest there to receive a Necklace. Move
north and open the easternmost cell. Inside you'll find Feena and the Mask of
Eyes. Tell Feena you will escort her out of the temple. Move slowly, killing
enemies as they approach, and make your way back to the outside and to Zeptik
Village. You're also welcome to snag the Defense Ring in the enemy free area
where you fought Jenocres on your way out; it's in the northwest corner.
______________________
[ZP2] Zeptik Village
______________________
As you enter Zeptik, Feena will collapse. You will bring her back to Jevah,
who will say she will take care of her. Use this opportunity to talk to the
mayor of Zeptik and return the Silver Bells. He will give you a Power Ring in
gratitude. Upon receiving this ring, return to the Temple of Salmon.
________________________
[TS2] Temple of Salmon
________________________
Make your back to floor B2. Take the third north passageway here and move to
northeastern corner, before heading south to the stairs to level B3. Tag along
the northern area to the northwest corner. Open the chest to find the Ivory
Key. Make your way to the southern part of the room. Starting from the east,
make your way to the second golden angel statue. Touch this to teleport to a
narrow passageway leading to the Silver Shield. Go back to the first golden
angel statue and open the chest there to find a Heal Potion. In this room
there is also a grey angel statue. Equip the Mask of Eyes in front of this to
reveal a pathway to the right of the statue. Step through and take the mask
off. Go all the way east to the golden angel statue there. Use this to move to
a room containing the Marble Key. Return to the area near the hidden passage
and use the golden angel statue there to enter a watery area. Go west to come
to the second boss of the temple.
  ***************************************************
  * Boss Battle * Nygtilger * Recommended Level: 15 *
  ***************************************************************************
  * To make this fight easier, you can return to Minea and upgrade your *
  * weapon and armor to Long Sword and Reflex, respectively. When you enter *
  * the boss room, approach the snake-like etching on the north wall. This *
  * will bring Nygtilger to life. Only his head can hurt you, so feel free *
  * to touch the rest of his body. Hold down the run button and dash around *
  * him as he circles for you. You need to hit the last segment of his body *
  * opposite his head. If any other segment is "stacked" on top of him, you *
  * won't be able to hurt him, so you need to keep his body spread out. *
  ***************************************************************************
Once you have defeated Nygtilger, move north and claim the first Book of Ys.
Return to Zeptik Village and speak with Jovah and Feena. Once you have done
so, return to Minea.
_____________
[MN2] Minea
_____________
Upgrade your equipment if you haven't done so already, then head to Sarah's
shop. You will find a note directing you to go to Vageux-Vardette to find the
Book of Tovah. Before you do, however, you probably want to go to Pim's shop
and buy the Sapphire Ring. Returning this to Donis, the one-eyed man, in the
tavern will reward you with 1500 gold, 500 gold more than the price of the
Sapphire Ring. Also be sure to go to Rosetti's shop and "talk" to him to find
that he has gotten some Talwarls in stock. It's 5000 gold, but you will be
acquiring a better sword shortly. Once you are ready, return to Zeptik Village
and head north to the Mountain Path.
_____________________
[MP2] Mountain Path
_____________________
Go the northwest corner, off the western side of the Temple of Salmon. You
will find a golden angel statue here. Touch it to move on to Vageux-Vardette.
_______________________
[VVE] Vageux-Vardette
_______________________
Initially head north as you enter and open the chest to claim the Defender.
Go the northwest corner and touch the black diamond to activate the southwest
gate of this area. Go to the southwestern corner and approach the black gate
to move to the next area. In the northwestern part of this area is a chest
containing the Ruby Shield. In the central north area is the next black
diamond you need to activate. This activates the southeastern gate. Take that
gate to the third area. Move south and take the first west you can. Continue
south to find the Mithril Mail. Go north now and follow the northernmost
curving route to the east. Activate the black diamond at its end, then return
to the previous area and take the gateway in the southwestern corner. In the
fourth area, enter the boss room to the north.
  **************************************************
  * Boss Battle * Petrorex * Recommended Level: 20 *
  ***************************************************************************
  * Petrorex has a fairly predictable attack pattern, but it doesn't really *
  * make him easy per se. The only part of his body that can hurt you are *
  * his arms, so that's what to avoid. Approach him initially to activate *
  * him, but then run away. Circle around him as he spins, then when he *
  * stops and juts his arms out, run in in-between his arms and hit him *
  * once before dashing back out. Repeat this until he is a pile of scrap. *
  ***************************************************************************
Once Petrorex is beaten, head north of his area and open the chest to find
that it is empty. Touch the angel statue to return to the Mountain Path.
Return to Minea.
_____________
[MN3] Minea
_____________
Return to Sarah's shop to find Elder Franz. He tells you non-chalantly that
Sarah has been murdered, but that she wanted Adol to have the second Book of
Ys that she recovered. After he gives it to you, he says her last words were
"the abandoned mine." When you're ready, head north to the Plains.
______________
[PN3] Plains
______________
Head all the way north to the third area. At the north edge of the screen,
near some sand in the center of the area, is the mine entrance. Go inside to
continue to the next dungeon.
_______________________
[MR1] Mines of Rastin
_______________________
The Mines of Rastin are dark, making it hard to see. This is more annoying
than difficult, however. Take the western path around to find a chest with a
Heal Potion inside. Continue down the path and head south to find the Time
Ring inside a second chest. A third chest containing the Silver Armor is in
an alcove just south of the entrance. Head to the southeastern corner and
take the path to a bridge over a pit. Walk across this and continue down to
the next floor. Move east and loop around to a small room on the second floor
to find the Heal Ring. Equip this when you need to stop and heal in any
dungeon. In the southwestern corner is a Roda Seed you will want to grab as
well. On your mini-map just two spots over is the chest containing the Silver
Harmonica which you need as well. From here you can either continue on or go
outside and get some useful items. If you want to continue on, skip to the
second Mines of Rastin section below. Otherwise, follow the walkthrough in
the normal order and leave the mine.
______________
[PN4] Plains
______________
From the mine entrance, go to the southwest and on to the next screen. From
here head to the northwest corner to a giant tree. Open your menu and use the
Roda Seed. Approach the Roda Tree after doing so to hear some cryptic stuff.
Go back to the east to the area just before Zeptik Village. Now take the
southern exit from this area. In this area, go to the lake in the southeast
to claim the Gold Pedestal. Head west off the screen to claim a piece of
Parchment. Return to the lake and head south. In this next area is a second
tree you can talk to. After doing so, follow the path behind the tree to find
a Herb. After all this cryptic stuff, go back to Minea.
_____________
[MN4] Minea
_____________
Go the northeast corner of town and enter a door in the town wall. Follow the
path up to find Reah atop the city walls. Return the Silver Harmonica to her
and she will play you a song. Once she does, return to the second Roda Tree to
acquire the Silver Sword. Go to the first Roda Tree as well to get some more
information about them.
_______________________
[MR2] Mines of Rastin
_______________________
Go back to the second floor. From the door go west and follow the path to the
south when it turns. Take the first east turn and look on the wall north of
you for the stairs down to the third floor. The path only goes one way really,
although it has a couple of small alcoves. In the second alcove is a chest
conatining the Dahm Key. The third alcove has a Heal Potion if you need one.
Continue down the path until you reach the boss.
  ***************************************************
  * Boss Battle * Vagullion * Recommended Level: 24 *
  ***************************************************************************
  * Open the chest in the room to release Vagullion. Vagullion will split *
  * into a bunch of bats. You have to run away from these bats, but stay *
  * close enough to them so that when he reforms you can run in and slash *
  * him once or twice before he splits into bats again. I recommend having *
  * the Defense Ring equipped to minimize damage as much as possible. *
  ***************************************************************************
Once Vagullion is defeated, collect the third Book of Ys. With this, return
to Zeptik Village.
______________________
[ZP3] Zeptik Village
______________________
Go and speak to Jevah. After exhausting her available dialogue, she will offer
to read the three volumes of the Book of Ys you currently have. Afterwards,
talk to Feena and return to Minea for any supplies you need. When you return
to Zeptik Village, talk to Jevah and Feena again. They will instruct you to
speak with Gorvan.
_____________________
[MP3] Mountain Path
_____________________
Return to the thief hideout and speak with the head thief, Gorvan. Follow him
through the door to enter the Tower of Dahm.
_____________________
[DM1] Tower of Dahm
_____________________
The Tower of Dahm is a twenty-five floor dungeon with four bosses that serves
as the final dungeon of the game. Explaining in detail the sheer amount of
backtracking and movement required is somewhat ludicrous for our purposes,
but you will become very familiar with the layout as you progress up the tower
you will quickly commit many of the floors to memory. For now, the stairs to
the second floor is in the southeast area of the floor. To the southeast on
this floor is an opening. Enter and go to the southwest to find the stairs to
the third floor. On this floor follow the path around the tower to the next
opening to find the stairs to the fourth floor. The chest on this floor has a
Reflex in it, but you already have better armor. The stairs to the fifth
floor is on the opposite end of the stairs leading back to the third floor.
On the fifth floor there are two paths. The righthand (east side) path leads
to a Large Shield, but you got something better so take the lefthand (west
side) path. Follow this path until you find yourself trapped with Luther
Gemma. Speak with him to activate a sequence whereas Dogi breaks you free and
gives you a Statue. Double-check to make sure you have what is now your best
gear and make your way back up to the third floor. Use the Mask of Eyes on
near the statues on this floor to reveal a room. Enter and speak with the man
inside. You'll give him the Statue and he'll offer you the Blue Necklace in
return. Make your way back up to where you were before on the sixth floor
when you got captured and use the Blue Necklace, which will allow you to kill
the enemies here and access the seventh floor. On this floor you need to speak
with Dogi (who is in the northwest) and recover the Silver Sword. Once you
have spoken with Dogi and recovered and re-equipped your weapon, take the
stairs to the eighth floor. Pictimos is on this floor, but for now go down the
northeast path to get to the ninth floor. Go southwest to the first fork, go
south here to the next fork, and go east here and follow the path to the
Silver Shield. Re-equip it and go back to the eighth floor and to the boss
door to face Pictimos.
  **************************************************
  * Boss Battle * Pictimos * Recommended Level: 24 *
  ***************************************************************************
  * Pictimos moves back and forth along the top of the room throwing three *
  * boomerangs at a time at you. These boomeranges spin around and come *
  * to Pictimos. As you would no doubt guess, you need to dodge his *
  * boomerangs and hit him while they are extended all the way out. *
  ***************************************************************************
With Pictimos defeated, claim the fourth Book of Ys and a Hammer you'll need
to smash a pillar on the tenth floor. Make your way back to where the Silver
Shield was and continue down the path to the stairs to the tenth floor. At
the fork, go north out on to the balcony. From here you will find a series of
pillars. Starting from the east you need to use the Hammer on the third
pillar. This will open a path leading to the eleventh floor. From here you
will find a trail of blood. Follow it to Luther Gemma. Talk to him to learn
about a girl trapped in the tower. Return to the tenth floor and head to the
southeastern end of the floor. Follow the path north in the corner to find a
second set of stairs to the eleventh floor. Climb these and follow the path
leading to a set of stairs to the twelfth floor. Continue onwards down this
path to the thirteenth floor. You'll find Labah again, talk to him, and then
head to the west to find the stairs to the fourteenth floor. Continue the
path to a second boss room.

  * Boss Battle * Khonsclard * Recommended Level: 24 *
  ***************************************************************************
  * You need to stick close to Khonsclard and move with him as much as you *
  * possibly can. His primary means of attack is to launch these lines of *
  * rocks at you as he moves about, so if you position yourself properly *
  * and follow his movements, you can avoid these rock lines. From there, *
  * just hit him when there is an opening. *
  ***************************************************************************
Collect the fifth Book of Ys and a Rod and return to the thirteenth floor.
Head to the southern end of the rooms of mirrors and walk into the southern
mirror and move down the path. At the fork, take the western path to another
mirror. Walk through it and continue through the next mirror as well. Loop to
the south, east, and then north in this next area to yet another mirror and
reclaim the Silver Armor on the other side. Re-equip it and touch the mirror
again. From where you emerge, move south and enter the mirror. This time go
southwest and enter the first mirror you come to. From here take the lefthand
(east side) mirror. If you re-enter the mirror you emerged from, you'll end
up on a different path leading to the fifteenth floor. There is a Battle
Shield in the south of this floor, but your ultimate goal is the second set
of stairs in the northwest. (The first set of stairs you see goes to the
seventeenth floor, so note it's location for latter.) From these stairs,
cross to the west to enter a subzone of the Tower of Dahm called the Lado
Spire.

[LDO] Lado Spire
__________________
The Lado Spire is a very simply designed sub-dungeon. Just make your way
through to the second floor. To proceed to the third floor, you need to equip
the Evil Ring (found on the third floor of the Tower of Dahm) and use the
Blue Necklace at the same time. If you only have the Evil Ring equipped and
are not using the Blue Necklace as you come out of the status screen, you
will die. With both active, enter the door and unequip the Evil Ring. Talk to
Reah here and get the Monocle from her, allowing you to read the various
volumes of the Book of Ys. Once you have it, read the volumes you've collected
(this step is required to progress) and return to the stairs to the
seventeenth floor of the Tower of Dahm.

On the seventeenth floor, take the southeastern path. As this path loops, a
path going up to the north central area will become apparent that contains a
Heal Potion. To progress to the eighteenth floor, follow the path to its end.
On this floor, take the southeastern path which eventually turns to the north
to find the stairs to the nineteenth floor. You need to use the Blue Necklace
again on this floor to beat the enemies here to claim the Battle Armor here.
Once you have it, you can return to the eighteenth floor and go to the
southwest, then loop to the north to find the stairs to the twentieth floor.
Go north and search for an opening along the northern wall. The Flame Sword
awaits inside here, so claim it and return to the main room. To the northeast
are the stairs to the twenty-first floor. Enter the mirror to the east of
where you appear. Go southeast and enter the mirror you come to. Take the
lefthand (west side) mirror here. Move down the path and to a boss door.
  ***********************************************************
  * Boss Battle * Yogrex and Omrgun * Recommended Level: 24 *
  ***************************************************************************
  * I'm not totally sure which head is which, but regardless the only one *
  * you can hurt is the yellow one. You need to strike the yellow head *
  * while avoiding the blue one, as well as the rotating objects around the *
  * two of them. This is a lot easier said then done. Further complicating *
  * matters is the fact that whenever you hit the yellow head, Omrgun and *
  * Yogrex will bounce around the room in an erratic matter. You can see *
  * your relative progress by watching the objects rotating around each *
  * head as one will disappear at regular intervals as they take damage *
  * until they fall.                                                        *
  ***************************************************************************
Heading north will lead you through the next three floors to Dark Fact's boss
door, but you can't enter it yet. Instead you need to go back to the eleventh
floor and talk to Luther Gemma. He'll give you the Blue Amulet. Use this at
Dark Fact's door to face him.
  ***************************************************
  * Boss Battle * Dark Fact * Recommended Level: 24 *
  ***************************************************************************
  * Dark Fact moves around the room constantly, forcing you to chase him. *
  * This plays out in your favor as meteors are constantly falling from the *
  * sky on to where you're standing, so don't stop moving. Further, each *
  * time you land a blow on Dark Fact, the floor below you will fall out, *
  * so be particularly active in moving whenever you strike him. As long as *
  * you keep moving and plan your blows to minimize blocking yourself into *
  * a corner and potentially falling to your death, Dark Fact should be one *
  * of the easier boss fights in the Tower of Dahm. *
  ***************************************************************************
With Dark Fact defeated, collect the seventh Book of Ys. Use your monocle on
it to finish the game.
