13th Dec 2009 - HUGE update.
Realised how I'd missed out all the as-of-yet
unobtainable ribbons thanks to Serebii. Added all of
these in under a new section. Made a new section
for the newly-obtainable ribbons in HG/SS, and added
in the HG/SS locations for the existing ribbons

3.0 Introduction
----------------
While trying to complete the Pokedex in Platinum in the summer of
2009, I learnt about the club in the Resort Area that allows you to
get a second massage for your Pokemon, and so evolve Pokemon that
evolve by happiness twice as fast. However I knew you needed 10
ribbons to get into this club, so I looked for an FAQ to give me a
list of ribbons so I would know which were the easiest to get.
However, I couldn't find one. So, after patrolling through Sinnoh
trying to find all the ribbons, I decided to make the FAQ myself.
I hope you find this FAQ helpful and useful. If you find any
mistakes, please email me (see the Contact Me section) and I will
edit this FAQ and add you to the credits.
Side note, I am playing the European version of Platinum. I am 99
percent sure that there are no differences in the ribbon descriptions
between the EU and the NA versions of the game, but if there are,
feel free to let me know that too.

4.0 Ribbon List
---------------
I will list the Ribbons in chronological order - that is, the order
in which they become available to you in the game.
They are listed using this format:

Fairly self explanatory. =) The numbers are there purely so you don't
accidentally lose your place; the ribbons aren't numbered in the
games.
The first section lists all the ribbons available in 4th gen
(Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold and SoulSilver) while the
second lists the ones found only in 3rd Gen (Ruby, Sapphire, FireRed,
LeafGreen and Emerald on the GBA and Colloseum and XD on the
Gamecube.). Some ribbons, like the Effort Ribbon, are the same in
both Hoenn and Sinnoh - that is, if you get it in Hoenn, it will
appear exactly the same on your Pokemon as if you got it in Sinnoh.
You can, therefore, only get it once on each Pokemon.
Also, the first 20 Ribbons in each list will be the Contest Ribbons.
I know that 99 out of 100 users will already know how to get them,
but for the sake of this being a complete list, I've included them.
So you can skip them easily, I have put a line saying END OF SINNOH
CONTEST RIBBONS after the contest ribbons, so you can ctrl+c that
phrase, ctrl+f, ctrl+v and enter, and you've skipped them.

In-Game Description: A Ribbon awarded to a Pokemon deemed to have a
top-quality footprint.
How to Get: Go East of Pastoria City until you see the house on the
sand. The man in this house will "read" the footprint of
the lead Pokemon in your party. If your Pokemon trusts
you (ie. it has two small hearts on the happiness checker
app) then he will give that Pokemon this ribbon.
Additional Note: Even if your lead Pokemon doesn't trust you enough,
the footprint doctor will still "read" your
Pokemon's footprint. You just won't get the ribbon.

Name: Effort Ribbon
In-Game Description: Ribbon awarded for being an exceptionally hard
worker.
How to Get: Talk to the woman on the left in Sunyshore Market, and
she will give this ribbon to the lead Pokemon in your
party if it has accumulated all 510 EVs.
How to Get in HG/SS: Same as in D/P/Pt, but the woman is in
Blackthorn City.
Additional Note: This ribbon can also be obtained in Hoenn, from a
woman in Slateport City Market. It counts as the
same ribbon - you can't get it once from Hoenn then
once more from Sinnoh.

Name: Alert Ribbon
In-Game Description: A Ribbon for recalling an invigorating event
that created life energy.
How to Get: Talk to the woman in the most north-western house in
Sunyshore city on a Monday.
How to Get in HG/SS: Talk to someone on Route 40 on a Monday.
Additional Note: It doesn't matter what you respond to the girl with,
she will give you the ribbon whatever you say. Same
goes for all the "emotion" ribbons (ribbons no. 23
through 29).
2nd Additional Note: Serebii is unclear as to the exact method of
obtaining the emotion ribbons in HG/SS. I'm
going to assume that you talk to someone like
in D/P/Pt, but I will confirm this once the game
gets released over here in England.

Name: Shock Ribbon

In-Game Description: A Ribbon awarded for defeating the Tower Tycoon
at the Battle Tower.
How to Get: Win 20 battles in a row in the Single room at the battle
tower to battle Palmer. Beat him, and the three Pokemon
you used to win receive this ribbon.
Additional Note: For all the Battle Tower Ribbons, only the Pokemon
you're using at the time of completing the
requirements recieve this ribbon, even if you hadn't
used them before completing the streak; in this
case, if you use the same Pokemon for the first 14
battles then change them for battles 15-21, only
those you are currently using will recieve the
ribbon.
2nd Additional Note: The BT Ribbons are available in HG/SS also,
through the exact same methods.

Name: Great Ability Ribbon
In-Game Description: A Ribbon awarded for defeating the Tower Tycoon
at the battle tower.
How to Get: This time, win 48 battles in a row in the Single room at
the battle tower to battle Palmer a second time. Beat him
(he's difficult!) and the three Pokemon you used recieve
this ribbon.

Name: Double Ability Ribbon
In-Game Description: A Ribbon awarded for completing the Sinnoh
Battle Tower Double Challenge.
How to Get: Win 50 battles in a row in the Double room of the Battle
Tower. The four Pokemon you use when passing the 50-win
mark recieve this ribbon.

Name: Multi Ability Ribbon
In-Game Description: A Ribbon awarded for completing the Sinnoh
Battle Tower Multi Challenge.
How to Get: Win 50 Battles in a row in the Multi room of the Battle
Tower with one of the in-game trainers. The two Pokemon
you use when passing the 50-win mark receive this ribbon.

Name: Pair Ability Ribbon
In-Game Description: A Ribbon awarded for completing the Sinnoh
Battle Tower Multi Challenge with a friend.
How to Get: Win 50 Battles in a row in the Multi room of the Battle
Tower with a friend, either by local connection or Wi-Fi.
Both your and your friend's Pokemon will receive this
ribbon after passing the 50-win mark.

Name: World Ability Ribbon
In-Game Description: A Ribbon awarded for completing the Sinnoh Wi-Fi
Battle Tower challenge.
How to Get: I haven't got this ribbon myself yet; I find the Wi-Fi
room of the Battle Tower very difficult. My friend
recieved this Ribbon but he says he doesn't know after
how many battles he recieved it. I would assume 50,
judging by the other Battle Tower Ribbons, but if I'm
wrong feel free to correct me. Or if I'm right, let me
know for sure. :)
EDIT: relkaw on the Platinum board confirmed that I was
wrong; you have to reach Rank 5 in the Wi-Fi room to get
this ribbon. It doesn't matter if you change your team,
as always. This is his description:
"You rank up every time you win 7 in a row and you rank
down every time you lose three sessions before getting to
the next rank. you don't have to win every single battle
up to the 35 battles to get to rank five. In other words,
you won't start at rank one if you lost a match when you
were rank 4. You have to lose three times in that rank
before you get ranked down, and even then you are only
ranked down one rank.

Name: Gorgeous Ribbon
In-Game Description: An extraordinarily gorgeous and extravagant
Ribbon.
How to Get: Once you've got into the Resort Area Ribbon Club, you can
go to the man at the counter and he'll sell this to you
for 10,000 pokedollars.

Name: Royal Ribbon
In-Game Description: An incredibly regal Ribbon with an air of
nobility.
How to Get: Talk to the same man you got the Gorgeous Ribbon from,
with a Pokemon with a Gorgeous Ribbon at the front of
your party. He'll offer to sell you this for 100,000
pokedollars.

Name: Gorgeous Royal Ribbon
In-Game Description: A gorgeous and regal Ribbon that is the peak of
fabulous.
How to Get: Same guy as the Gorgeous and Royal Ribbons. Talk to him
with a Pokemon with the Royal Ribbon at the front of your
party, and he'll offer to sell you this for 999,999
pokedollars.
Additional Note: 999,999 POKEDOLLARS?! It's the Rolex of the Pokemon
World!

Name: Classic Ribbon
In-Game Description: A commemorative Ribbon obtained in a Mystery
Zone.
How to Get: This Ribbon is automatically attached to most Event
Pokemon; Almia Darkrai, Movie11 Shaymin, TRU Manaphy etc.
It cannot be obtained any other way.
Additional Note: This Ribbon has three different descriptions. In
my EU Platinum, it gives the description shown
above. In my EU Diamond, it gives the description
"A commemorative ribbon obtained at a mystery
location." However, I am also aware it has the
description "A Ribbon that proclaims love for a
Pokemon." My assumption is that this is the
description given by NA D/P/Pt copies, however, this
is just my speculation; could someone who has the NA
version of Platinum confirm / deny this?
EDIT: A Mr Andrew Clapp emailed me on the 19th Sept,
telling me that he has NA Platinum and he gets the
"proclaims love" description on his game. Looks
like I was right, yay. =P
2nd Additional Note: Any Pokemon with this Ribbon cannot be traded on
the GTS.

In-Game Description: Ribbon awarded for being chosen as a super
sketch model in Hoenn.
How to Get: BEFORE competing in any Master-rank contest, go to the
museum in Lilycove city and talk to the curator. Next,
go beat any Master-rank contest. There will be an artist
waiting for you when you come out of the contest. Answer
yes to his question, and he will put a sketch of your
Pokemon on the 2nd floor of the museum, and your Pokemon
will be awarded this ribbon. There can be five sketches
in the museum at any one time; one for each category.
Additional Note: Even if you already have a sketch of a Pokemon in
the category you just won, you can answer yes to the
artist again upon winning the contest; this will
replace the sketch of the Pokemon in that category
that was there before, and likewise, your Pokemon
will get the Artist Ribbon.

Name: Champion Ribbon
In-Game Description: Ribbon for clearing the Pokemon League and
entering the Hall of Fame in another region.
How to Get: Beat the Pokemon League in either Ruby, Sapphire,
Firered, Leafgreen or Emerald.
Additional Note: Some useless trivia for you; the Champion Ribbon is
the only ribbon obtainable in FR/LG.

Name: Winning Ribbon
In-Game Description: Ribbon awarded for clearing the Hoenn Battle
Tower's Lv. 50 challenge.
How to Get: After winning 49 battles at the Battle Tower in Lvl 50
mode, every Pokemon that you use to beat more 7-streak
wins will recieve this ribbon. (So all the Pokemon that
you use to beat the 56th battle will recieve this, and
the same for the 62nd battle, and so on.)

Name: Victory Ribbon
In-Game Description: Ribbon awarded for clearing the Hoenn Battle
Tower's Lv. 100 challenge.
How to Get: Same as Winning Ribbon, but in Lvl 100 mode.

Name: National Ribbon

became obtainable. This may be the case for some more once there are

In-Game Description: A Ribbon awarded for setting a legendary record.
How to Get: Defeat Red in Mt. Silver, and all your party Pokemon will
be awarded this ribbon.
No. 2
Name: Premier Ribbon
In-Game Description: A commemorative Ribbon obtained in a Mystery
Zone.
How to Get: There was a Wi-Fi event in Japan for a 10th Anniversary
Mew, and this Ribbon was attached to it. The event is
over now, although they may do a US event for it once the
games get released over here.
So at the moment, if you see this Ribbon attached to any
Pokemon other than a Japanese Mew, that Pokemon is
hacked (or has been edited with a hacking device).

4.4 Ribbons available only through hacking

These Ribbons are programmed into the games, but as of yet, have no
method of obtaining other than using a hacking device.
The first five of these ribbons were programmed into the 3rd gen
games as well. The In-Game Descriptions are that of the 4th gen
games, although I doubt they were any different in the 3rd gen.

5.0 Strategies for 10 Ribbons
-----------------------------
One of the main reasons you may have visited this FAQ is to find out
the easiest Ribbons to get so you can get into the Resort Area Ribbon
Club. For those who don't know, the Ribbon Club allows you to massage
Pokemon which increases happiness, meaning you can massage Pokemon
twice a day as opposed to only once, halving the time it takes to
evolve Pokemon that evolve by happiness.
(The Ribbon Club also allows you to buy the Gorgeous, Royal, and
Gorgeous Royal Ribbons.)
In this section I will list some strategies to get 10 Ribbons as
easily and quickly as possible. For each, I'll list the time it takes
and an effort rating out of five. I will assume you haven't already
got the once-daily emotion ribbon each time, and have money/berries
to get pokeblocks/poffins.

5.1 Strategies that require Migrating
-------------------------------------
The job of getting 10 ribbons on one Pokemon is made a lot quicker if
you have either Ruby, Sapphire or Emerald. If you have Colosseum or
XD it will help too as you can get the National Ribbon with no
effort at all.
Strategy 1: The Two-Region Contest Strategy
-------------------------------------------
Time: 1-2 hours (depends how good you are at contests)
Effort: 4/5
Fairly straightforward; win all the ranks of a certain category or
contest in Hoenn, get the Artist Ribbon, then migrate over and win
all the ranks of that same category (although the moves' contest
effects will have changed, as far as I'm aware they stay the same
category) and get one emotion ribbon. If you can't win the Sinnoh
Master Rank contest, then you could get the Effort Ribbon, or the
Sinnoh Champ Ribbon instead, as these are relatively easy to get. If
of course you win the contests with a Pokemon from Colosseum or XD
then the National Ribbon will make up that last ribbon.
You could also miss out the Hoenn Master Rank contest and replace
with Champion Ribbon, and then go for the Footprint Ribbon, but if
you find Hoenn master rank contests easy then you may as well do that
since you get both the Master Rank Ribbon and the Artist Ribbon from
doing so.
Strategy 2: The Normal-Rank-Contest-Only Strategy

Time: 1-2 Hours
Effort: 3/5 (less focus on the contests, but you'll pretty much have
to visit the move tutor at least twice, or put TMs to waste)
Like above, but instead, only win the Normal Rank contests of each
category, as opposed to all the ranks of a specefic category. Feed
your Pokemon assorted Pokeblocks to boost appeal in all areas, enough
to beat the other contestants on visual appeal, the just use two
moves that fit with the category you're in and you're very, very
likely to win, since the normal rank contests in both Hoenn and
Sinnoh are mind-numbingly easy. Feel free to miss out some and
replace with an emotion ribbon, the Footprint Ribbon, Champion Ribbon
or the Effort Ribbon. I suggest missing out the Sinnoh contests since
they require more concentration due to the dance section.
The only snag with this is that it means a lot of heart scales/TMs
go to waste as you have to constantly change the moves to fit the
category. You're almost guaranteed to win if you have moves in the
right category, and pretty much every pokemon can learn at least one
move for each, but if you don't have moves in the right category it
does become harder.
Of course, this strategy takes a lot longer and requires a lot more
effort if you need to get heart scales...

5.2 Strategies using only one Game Card

Strategy 1: The Two-Contest Strategy
------------------------------------
Time: 2-3 Hours
Effort: 5/5 (Damn Sinnoh Contests!)
Win all the ranks of the contests in TWO categories. Yep, it hurts.
This is how I did it: first, get a Rhydon. 2nd, buy 15 of the spicy-
sour poffins from the basement of the department store. (This only
appears in Platinum; in D/P, you'll have to make the poffins
yourself) Feed Rhydon all these Poffins to max out his Cool and Tough
stats, and then teach it Scary Face, Earthquake, Hammer Arm and
Megahorn. Scary Face and Hammer Arm make Rhydon go last, Earthquake
and Megahorn earn double score if they go last. Simple contest
strategy, but it worked for me (Scary Face and Earthquake are Tough
moves, while Hammer Arm and Megahorn are Cool). I was able to beat
all ranks of the Cool and Tough contests with this Rhydon despite
having next to no accessories for the visual appeal. However there is
a contest FAQ too so look at that for better contest strategies.
Obviously for the last two ribbons you can do what you like; an
emotion ribbon and the Sinnoh Champ Ribbon are probably the easiest
two to get. Add in the Effort Ribbon and Footprint ribbon if you
are struggling with the two Master rank contests.
Strategy 2: The Whole-Week-Long Strategy

Time: 7 Days
Effort: 1/5
Every day, go to the ribbon girl and get an emotion ribbon. Then do
whatever you like for the last 3. Win contests, beat the league, etc.
It's a long process, since you can't just simply time travel (there
is a way of doing it, but it's very tedious, it's not just a simple
case of switch-the-calendar). This is by far the easiest, and I
suppose less time consuming strategy (it doesn't take long to talk to
that girl once a day) but since it takes a week you may want to opt
for another strategy. I'm impatient, so I don't like this one.

Q: I talked to the ribbon girl in Sunyshore and she refused to give

A: Yes, no-one really asked this, but this was a mistake I made. The
emotion ribbons are assigned to each day and if you talk to the
girl when your lead Pokemon already has the ribbon assigned to the
current day, she will say that she has more ribbons to give so
come back with a different Pokemon. I hadn't realised my Garchomp
had got the Smile Ribbon, I thought it had the Relax ribbon
(which my Rhyperior turned out to have instead) which lead me to
believe you could only get one emotion ribbon per Pokemon, since
I talked to her on a Sunday.
