I. Introduction
==============================================================================
Hey, Kelsper here, and this is my guide for Fire Emblem: Shin Monshou no
Nazo Hikari to Kage no Eiyuu. (that is quite the mouthful) It covers all the
characters that you can find in game and gives my opinion on them. Note that
this is not a clear cut "don't use this character". Hell, you could even do
a strictly, pre-promotes and Bantu only run. This guide is to give an idea on
who the most efficient characters are. In the end, your playthrough is yours
and you can do whatever you want with it.

Be aware that the game is only available in Japan and was not released too
long ago so the information (especially the growth rates/average stats) could
be wrong. This guide is also a work in progress.

Also, the guide is assuming that you are:

A) Playing on Normal or Hard mode (On Lunatic mode especially, characters
ratings would be completely different as everyone has different uses, and most
will only be useful in the short term before being dumped (This is similiar on
Maniac mode, but to a lesser degree). Hard mode is a little harder, but still
manageable.

B) Are allowing no reclassing (Reclassing is generally not needed on normal or
hard. While it is especially useful for some characters, these characters
opinions are of them in their native class.)

III. Characters
==============================================================================

=====
Marth
=====
Class: Lord (No promotion but can achieve level 30)
Appearance: The blue haired main character. Has a tiaram wears blue armour
and a blue cape with a red orb fastened onto it.
Bio: Prince of Altea. Values his friends. He led the allied army in the War
of Shadows and defeated the Shadow Dragon, Medeus.
Recruitment: Joins you in Prologue 8, and is the main character from then on.

Base Stats: (Level 6)
HP - Str - Mag - Skl - Spd - Lck - Def - Res
26    8     0    10    10     9     8     0

Stat Growths:
HP - Str - Mag - Skl - Spd - Lck - Def - Res
90%  60%    0%   65%   65%   80%   30%    5%

Average Stats: (Level 30 Lord)
HP - Str - Mag - Skl - Spd - Lck - Def - Res
48   22     0    25*   25*   28    15     1

Comments:
Marth has got improvements in every growth from Shadow Dragon, bar magic.
Decent enough bases means that Marth stays good throughout the game.
Much better then he was in Shadow Dragon, at least and he gets the Shield of
Seals later on in the game that gives him +2 to all stats. He will likely cap
Skill and Speed, but might need a little luck or an energy drop to cap
strength. Luck is also very high, his weaknesses being Defense and Resistance.
Expect to get 4 or 5 stats when he levels up. He's the only one that can use
the Rapier, aswell, which can be relatively useful.

Rating: 8.5/10

=======
My Unit
=======
Class: Various >> Various

Peg Knight:60%   35%    0%   50%   55%   60%   30%   10%

Past bonuses:
Merchant's Child = +2 Luck and Resistance, +5% Luck growth.
Cleric's Child = +2 Defense. No growth bonus.
Orphan = +2 Strength and Magic, +5% Strength and Magic growths.
Farmer's Child = +4HP, +10% HP growth.
Noble's Child = +2 Skill and Speed, +5% Skill and Speed growths.

Present bonuses:
Wise = +1 Luck and Resistance, +10% Luck growth, +5% Resistance growth.
Beautiful = +1 Skill and Speed, +10% Skill and Speed growths.
Odd = +1 Strength and Magic, +10% Strength and Magic growths.
Gentle = +1 Defense, +5% Defense growth.
Mighty = +2 HP, +20% HP growth.

Future bonuses:
Humanitarian = +10% Defense growth.
Glorious = +15% Skill and Speed growths.
Pursuer = +30% HP growth.
Wealthy = +15% Luck growth, +10% Resistance growth.
Recluse = +15% Strength and Magic growths.

You get to choose any from the past options, four out of the five present
options, and three out of the five future options. The choices you made for
Past/Present affect what you can and cannot choose. For example, If for past
I used Farmer's Child, I could not choose Mighty or Pursuer for Present/Future
bonuses, as I can only have one +HP bonus from all three. If that makes any
sense.

Comments: Well, My Unit is a new thing to Fire Emblem, and I would be lying
if I said it wasn't completely broken. You choose a couple options
determinating base stats and growths, but usually no matter what you pick your
my unit will be really good. I particular like using Fighter, as that seems to
have good results. Mage seems to be somewhat underwhelming due to a lower
magic base instead of strength.

Rating: 8-10/10 (Can either be an very good character at worst, but is
more often then not an amazinginly broken character.)

====
Luke
====
Class: Cavalier >> Paladin
Appearance: Youth with green hair. Has blue armour.
Bio: Member of the 7th platoon of Altean knights. Rash and stubborn, he is a
nuisance to Rody.
Recruitment: Joins in Prologue 3.

Base Stats: (Level 1)
HP - Str - Mag - Skl - Spd - Lck - Def - Res
20    7     0     5     7     4     7     0

Stat Growths:

Average Stats: (Level 20/20 Paladin)

58   25*    1    27    25*   19    23     8

Comments: Luke probably has the best starting stats out of the first three
cavaliers, and has his growths spread pretty evenly, with high defense,
strength and HP especially. He is one of the most consistent units in the
game. His strength and defense will always stay high, and his skill and speed
are high enough to make him a very well rounded character. His luck is lower
then the other two starting cavaliers however.

Rating: 8.5/10

====
Rody
====
Class: Cavalier >> Paladin
Appearance: Youth with brown hair. He looks like Leaf from FE5. Has green
armour.
Bio: Member of the 7th platoon of Altean knights. Usually keeps a calm
composure, although lately has been bothered by Luke.
Recruitment: Joins in Prologue 3

Base Stats: (Level 1)
HP - Str - Mag - Skl - Spd - Lck - Def - Res
20    6     0     5     6     5     6     0

Stat Growths:
HP - Str - Mag - Skl - Spd - Lck - Def - Res
80%  50%    0%   60%   65%   60%   40%    5%

Average Stats: (Level 20/20 Paladin)

54   25*    1    28*   25*   25*   22     8

Comments: Rody's base stats are pretty poor, but he makes up for them with
high growths. His growths resembles Luke's but he has much better skill, speed
and luck growths. He still does well in strength and defense. Should you
give him time to grow, he will become one of your best units. He will end up
having less HP then Luke, and will grow strength slower, but Rody beats him in
everything else.

Rating: 8.5/10

=====
Cecil
=====
Class: Cavalier >> Paladin
Appearance: Young knight with red hair, with a ribbon. Has red armour.
Bio: Member of the 7th platoon of Altean knights. Originally from the 9th
platoon. Hates to lose and often gets into fights unintentionally.
Recruitment: Joins in Prologue 6

Base Stats: (Level 3)
HP - Str - Mag - Skl - Spd - Lck - Def - Res
19    6     0     8     9     6     5     0

Stat Growths:

Average Stats: (Level 20/20 Paladin)

48   24     5    28*   25*   24    17     8

Comments: Cecil specializes in high skill and speed, and with those growths,
she's guaranteed to cap them. She is somewhat difficult to train in the
beginning because of her low durability, compared to Luke and Rody.
Her strength actually isn't too bad, as she comes close to capping it on
average (25). She will still become a very good unit, despite her defense
growth being lower then the other two cavaliers, but still quite decent.

=====
Arran
=====
Class: Paladin
Appearance: Purple armour with spikes on shoulder plates. Has long and messy
blonde hair. Looks angry.
Bio: Commander of the Altean knights. Afflicted by illness. Originally a
wandering paladin.
Recruitment: Joins in Chapter 1.

Base Stats: (Level 20/3)
HP - Str - Mag - Skl - Spd - Lck - Def - Res
26   10     1    12    11     4    10     6

33   13     1     16   13     6    13     6

Comments: Well, we've got to have our Jagen character. His growths and
starting stats are pretty pitiful. He can help out at the start, but drop him
later on. At least he's better then Jagen in Shadow Dragon. He also might do
better swapped to swordmaster, but he really should be dropped. Any experience
he gets is wasted on his basically nonexistant growths.

Rating: 3.5/10

======
Gordin
======
Class: Archer >> Sniper
Appearance: Looks quite young with green hair, greyish armour, and a quiver
on his back.
Bio: A bowman of Altea, a little timid. He escaped to Talys with Marth during
the War of Shadows.
Recruitment: Joins if you choose the second option in Prologue 3. If not,
joins in chapter 1.

Base Stats: (Level 5)
HP - Str - Mag - Skl - Spd - Lck - Def - Res
21    9     0     7     6     5     8     0

Stat Growths:

70%  40%    0%   40%   40%   50%   30%    0%

Average Stats: (Level 20/20 Sniper)
HP - Str - Mag - Skl - Spd - Lck - Def - Res
53   24*    1    26    25    22    19     3

Comments: Gordin is pretty much the same as he was in Shadow Dragon, but with
20% more strength growth, which definately helps. He is decent, but his better
start will quickly be outshined by his brother Ryan's growths. Use him if you
want an easier starting time, but his growths will let him done a bit further
down the line. He does get better luck then Ryan, however.

Rating: 7/10

====
Ryan
====
Class: Archer >> Sniper
Appearance: Very young, with green hair and green armour.
Bio: Member of the 7th platoon of Altean knights. He is timid, just like his
elder brother Gordin.
Recruitment: Joins in Prologue 2.

Base Stats: (Level 1)
HP - Str - Mag - Skl - Spd - Lck - Def - Res
18    7     0     4     4     3     7     0

Stat Growths:
HP - Str - Mag - Skl - Spd - Lck - Def - Res
80%  50%    0%   80%   50%   40%   35%    0%

Average Stats: (Level 20/20 Sniper)
HP - Str - Mag - Skl - Spd - Lck - Def - Res
56   24*    1    30*   28    18    21     3

Comments: Ryan's starting stats are pretty ick, especially that skill and
speed, but don't be fooled, Ryan has some pretty outrageous growths,
especially skill. While he will have a worse start then Gordin, he will
eventually turn out much better then him. HP, strength, speed and defense are
all very good, and skill is pretty much guaranteed to cap, making him a crit
monster. His luck is the only thing going to drag somewhat, since he starts
out with 3 base.

Rating: 9/10

=====
Draug
=====
Class: Knight >> General
Appearance: Greenish-blue hair. Has tiny eyes. In a huge suit of blue armour.
Bio: Knight of Altea, known for his rigid defence. During the War of Shadows,
he acted as the knights' shield.
Recruitment: Joins if you choose the first option in Prologue 5, or at the
start of Chapter 1.

Base Stats: (Level 6)
HP - Str - Mag - Skl - Spd - Lck - Def - Res
22    10    0     5     5     3    11     0

Stat Growths:
HP - Str - Mag - Skl - Spd - Lck - Def - Res
80%  40%    0%   50%   50%   40%   55%    0%

Average Stats: (Level 20/20 General)
HP - Str - Mag - Skl - Spd - Lck - Def - Res
58   25     1    23    21*   16    30*    3

Comments: Draug is interesting as he has an uncharacteristic speed and skill
growth, both of them being higher then his strength growth. His defense is
good enough to be able to cap it as a general. He will probably cap speed,
and will be a good tank throughout the game. I've heard he's better class
swapped as other classes, like Hunter or Pirate. A good choice for a general
that is there at the start of the game.

Rating: 7.5/10

=========
Malliesia
=========
Class: Cleric >> Bishop
Appearance: Young looking, light blue hair with a pigtail to the side. Wearing
pale pink clothes, and has a necklace.
Bio: A young girl from Grust. High-spirited and prone to flights of fancy.
She pretended to be a child to hide from Lang.
Recruitment: Visit the village in Chapter 1.

Base Stats: (Level 1)
HP - Str - Mag - Skl - Spd - Lck - Def - Res

41    1    21    14    25*   27     9    18

Comments: Will likely be your main healer for the majority of the game. Has
a high magic and speed growth, but is frail as you would expect. She will
get good luck, but will always be a bit on the weak side with HP and defense.
A 12 luck base is very nice, though. It's better to start training her at this
point, as Yumina is the only real other standard healer that can compare to
her.

Rating: 9/10

======
Catria
======
Class: Pegasus Knight >> Falconknight/Dracoknight
Appearance: Short deep blue hair, with a headband. Armour looks like white
that has been dirtied.
Bio: Middle sibling of the pegasus sisters. Has a steadfast personality.
During the War of Shadows, she aided Marth together with Minerva.
Recruitment: Joins at the start of Chapter 2.

Base Stats: (Level 6)

54   26*    0    26*   23*   25    23    6

Comments: Catria is one of the best and consistent units in the game. Decent
bases, and pretty insane growths with room to grow means that she is useful
in any circumstances. Don't even think about not using, Catria is your
GODDESS! Also, she has a triangle attack with her sisters Palla and Est,
if that wasn't enough to sell her.

Rating: 10/10

======
Warren
======
Class: Hunter >> Horseman
Appearance: Wavy blonde hair that drifts over his green headband. Has a quiver
on his back, and a raggy green shirt.
Bio: Hunter from Medon. A quiet character who enjoys being a lone wolf.
Joined the rebel army for money.
Recruitment: Talk to him with Catria in Chapter 2.

Base Stats: (Level 2)
HP - Str - Mag - Skl - Spd - Lck - Def - Res

53   24*    1    28*    25    16     18    5

Comments: Warren actually has a speed growth and decent speed base this time
around, wow. (In the SNES version he had a 10% speed growth) He's pretty
similiar to Gordin. Actually, he's probably the best character in the game
that starts as a Hunter/Horseman, although Castor is alright too. His skill,
strength and speed are all pretty decent.

Rating: 7/10

====
Cord
====
Class: Fighter >> Warrior
Appearance: Hair similiar to Warrens, but brown. Has a whitish headband.
Has a torn pale green shirt.
Bio: Woodcutter from Talys. Ogma's subordinate. He is renowned for the speed
of his work. During the War of Shadows, he aided Marth together with Ogma.
Recruitment: Visit the village in Chapter 2.

Base Stats: (Level 2)

Comments: Cord gets high HP, strength, speed, and decent skill and luck.
I prefer him over Bord because he actually has good enough speed and is more
balanced overall, except from perhaps defense, but all three fighters have the
defense problem. He's good enough to use, but I would recommend waiting for
Barst instead. He has a triangle attack with Bord and Barst.

Class: Mage >> Sage
Appearance: Long brown hair in a ponytail. Has a jeweled headpiece, and wears
red clothes embroiled with white and gold patterns.
Bio: Court official who serves at Akaneia Palace. Her father was killed by
Gharnef in the War of Shadows and she joined Marth's forces to exact
vengeance.
Recruitment: From the start of Chapter 3.

Comments: Very good skill, speed and luck, and average magic makes Linde a
pretty good unit to use, and she can use Aura straight off the bat, which can
really help. She can also use Nosferatu, which can be used to regain back the
health she loses if she should get hit, as she has low HP and defense. Her HP,
defense and resistance will always remain low, though.

Comments: Palla is the opposite of Catria; high bases, but low growths. But
her growths are really not all that low. She WILL cap skill, probably strength
aswell, but she barely caps speed on average, meaning she grows little speed
unfortunately. Nevertheless, she's a great unit to use, probably in
combination with Catria. She has a triangle attack with Catria and Est.

speed growth wasn't so low. His luck is also lower then Cord's, and he does
come a chapter later at the same level as Cord. I say skip, although he can
become decent. He has a triangle attack with Cord and Barst, if you're willing

Comments: Julian turns out to be a pretty decent fighter if you train him, but
his main purpose is to unlock chests, doors, etc. He is required to recruit
Lena in the final chapter, and Rickard is much worse then him, so I recommend
training him at least a bit so he can survive. Defense is actually pretty
decent, but his HP will be low. Consider giving him a Seraph Robe.

Comments: Well, Matthis has really never been good, and this game is
no exception. His bases are meh (a part from 9 defense), and his growths arn't
much better, though he does manage good HP and strength growths. The problem
is that he is so lacking in skill, speed and has abysmal luck that he never
really recovers to become more then a below average unit.

very good. He is left in the dust by Malliesia, and you should just leave him
on the bench. There's really no reason to use him. He does get more skill then
Malliesia, but uh... what's the point? Also, thanks bald old guy for just
dropping in the middle of the map with some knights around you. Jeez.

do well in HP, strength, skill, speed, and luck. His defense will fall behind
eventually though, that being Ogma's only problem. It still is alright at a
25% growth, though. He's superior to Caesar and any prepromote heroes that

Comments: She is actually pretty average, but honestly, why would you want to
train a level 2 cleric at this time? Assuming you've been using Malliesia,
there's no real reason to use her. Nice speed and luck though. Too bad she
comes at level 2, if she were a bit higher level and had some sort of
incentive to use her, it would be worth it. (In SNES, the rescue stave was

Comments: He's... uh... well, I think 1 magic base sums it up. As a mage.
He does have a better magic growth then Linde and Merric, but he isn't worth
it in the long run. His skill also starts bad, so you'll pretty much need to

he isn't as good as he was back in FE3. He is needed to recruit Nyna in the

good paladin overall, with stats being a bit worse then Luke's once you train

you're not, then Castor would make a decent horseman.

Comments: Radd is an above average myrmidon should you choose to train him.
He has great strength and acceptable skill, speed and luck. A better choice
then Samto, but still lacking somewhat. He will also have a pretty bad start,
being able to deploy in Chapter 7 as a level 5, where you get Nabarl anyway.

Comments: Nabarl takes what Radd was and makes his skill and luck better.
His bases are also really good. Nabarl will retain high HP, strength, skill,
luck and of course, speed. He's your best bet for a swordmaster. It's too
bad the dodge formula means that the myrmidon class is not at it's full
potential, but swordmaster does give +10 avoid on promotion, so it'll help.

2 strength and 2 skill and has a 60% and 80% growth in them respectively.
Level her up by dancing, and you will quickly be able to use her as a fighter,
as she doesn't do too badly, either. Only problem is that her HP and defense
stay somewhat low, and she can only get to level 30.

Frey, he's actually pretty decent. He barely caps strength and luck on

Draug, his HP, strength and defense being key. He also strangely gets pretty
high luck. His skill and speed really arn't too bad either, but it might be

She will never be one of your killer units, but she does well enough to be
a good dracoknight. You need her to recruit Maria in the final chapter,

Comments: Etzel actually turns out suprisingly okay despite coming promoted.
His magic, skill and speed are all good. He's the only character in the game
to come as a Dark Mage/Sorcerer in their native class, and he isn't too bad
as a secondary healer or fighting unit. Like all mages, he will have somewhat
low HP, but for a mage he has a good defense growth. Don't expect very
good speed or luck compared to Linde, though.

Comments: Merric makes a very good sage should you choose to use him. He is
required in the final chapter to recruit Elice, but he really isn't a bad
character to use at all. His magic will be a bit lacking, so you might want
to consider giving him a Spirit Dust, but other then that, his stats should
all be good. He will also cap speed much faster then Ellerean, so that's a

Comments: I don't really know about Ellerean... he is recruitable in the same
chapter as Merric, has about the same base stats as Merric, but worse growths.
He's decent, no doubt about it, but Merric does beat him in luck and skill
especially. Ellerean does win in defense and hp, though, so he's more like a
tanky mage. He's above average, and very usable, but is harder to train then
Merric, and is not required in the final chapter like Merric. Comes with a
Thoron.

and his bases don't make up for it much as a level 12. It isn't really worth

She also has a worrying 5% defense growth, which is really risky for a melee

have actually been a pretty good unit with his growths being as high as they

Comments: Leiden has slightly worse bases then Belf, but slightly better
growths. It's so minimal that they basically turn out the same, but once again,
he's not worth it compared to Luke/Rody/Cecil/Frey or even Cain. He does get
higher skill, luck and resistance on average then Belf, but Belf gets more HP,
strength, and defense.

Comments: I take back what I said about Robert, this guy is worse. He does
have good enough growths, but his bases drag him down so much that he is
basically unsalvagable. You'll probably find no use for him at this point,
and even if you manage to level him, his 20/20 averages are not very

Comments: A level 10 myrmidon at this point in the game is basically suicide.
You'll find it very hard to train her, with no real gain (she turns out a bit
better then Malice, but that's about it.) She is rather useful for her
prologue utility though, so I put her score up a bit for that. I would say
the effort in training her is really not worth it.

to use him. Depending on if you want a unit that copies others determines
how useful you'll think he is. He's pretty good, but will of course only be
as good as your units. Then again, if he copied your godliest units, he will
be extremely good.

archetype is based around. If you put effort into training her, she can be
better then Catria (!) but, because it is such a pain to train her, (you need
to baby her, basically) she lost some score for that. Use if you can be

low HP, however, but higher luck compared to Catria.

higher speed growth. The only thing Dolph has on him is skill, which eh...
He still isn't that great, but he certainly is better then Dolph and Horace.
He does however come as a level 1 general which doesn't help his start when

make up those bad base stats with. She really finds it hard to kill anything.
She has a bad start, joining in 16x, and becomes... average. While she will
have as much magic as Linde, Linde has much more skill, and luck, and has a
much easier start. Katarina's defense is pretty high for a sage, however, and
apparently she has a ton of defense as a general. Could be useful, but you

Midia
=====
Class: Paladin
Appearance: Short blue hair. Pinkish purple armour with a purple undershirt.
Bio: Captain of the Akaneian knights. Fearless and strong-willed. Her loyalty
to Nyna is absolute, she aided Marth in the War of Shadows.
Recruitment: Starts off on your side in Chapter 20.

Base Stats: (Level 20/12)

Comments: A mediocre paladin. She comes at level 12, and she doesn't really
have much room to grow. I'll say this again, but you should have already
better by this point. I'll even take a trained Matthis or Abel over her.
She also has a 15% resistance growth, which is pretty weird for a physical
damage unit.

Ymir
====
Class: Warrior
Appearance: Deep purple spiky hair. Wearing a brown fur coat. Has sort of
green/black face paint.
Bio: Fighter from the frontier lands. Despite appearances, he's a kind-hearted
man. During the War of Shadows, he fought for the villagers who treated him
well.
Recruitment: Starts off on your side in Chapter 21.

Base Stats: (Level 20/10)

Comments: I think he's decent too, but we're coming to the end of the game,
and he doesn't really have anything spectular to give to your team. I would
bench him. Should you have trained Bord/Cord/Barst or even Dice, they still
would have capped HP and strength, which Ymir fails to do on average.
Oh well. Least his speed and defense growths are decent for a prepromote
warrior.

Michalis
========
Class: Dracoknight
Appearance: Pretty long red hair with a huge collar from a brown overcoat.
Patterned in silver. Has a purple cape.
Bio: King of Medon. He killed his father, the previous king, to secure the
throne. He was defeated by Marth in the War of Shadows. Wanting to repent.
Recruitment: From Chapter 22's battle preparations if you had Minerva wait on
the Chapter 21 village for a turn and then visit it with Marth.

Base Stats: (Level 20/12)
HP - Str - Mag - Skl - Spd - Lck - Def - Res

Comments: What? There's someone that isn't a crappy prepromote? Okay well,
he only gets 2 full chapters and the final chapter to use in, but his bases
are actually extremely good. Except luck. 2 Luck. Ouch. You'll soon see that
enemies will often have high crit rates against him. Might be a bit risky to
use him, but if you give him a couple of Goddess Icons, he should be fine.
Should you give him levels, you'll see that his growths are actually quite
good, and should be pleased with the results. The fact that he's only around
for 3 chapters makes it quite unlikely you'll reach his full potential, but
he caps skill and speed on average, with high defense and strength.

Nagi
====
Class: Manakete (does not have a promotion but can reach level 30.)
Appearance: Long green hair with a headpiece that is like Tiki's. Wearing a
pink dress.
Bio: A mysterious female who descended from another dimension. Said to be the
incarnation of the Divine Dragon King.
Recruitment: Starts off on your side in Chapter 22.

Base Stats: (Level 20/15)
HP - Str - Mag - Skl - Spd - Lck - Def - Res

Comments: She has about the same growths as Tiki, with roughly the same
averages for level 30. I'm not sure if using her will be that worth it, but
eh. If you have been using Tiki, she will probably have better stats then her
at this point, if not, you can go ahead and use her.

the Sable. She entrusted the Fire Emblem to Marth during the War of Shadows.

Maria: Talk to her with Minerva in Chapter 24.

Bio: Princess of Medon. Wishes to be of help to her elder siter and brother.
During the War of Shadows, she was rescued from confinement by Marth.

Elice: Talk to her with Merric in Chapter 24.
Appearance: Long blue hair, with white and pale blue robes with orange edges.
Bio: The princess of Altea, Marth's elder sister. Kind-hearted. She was
kidnapped by Gharnef during the War of Shadows.

Comments: These four bishops only real purpose is to run away from Medeus.
Fast. They can be used to heal, use rescue staves, etc, but you'll probably
have the final battle done before they have any use. Lena and Maria have
Physic staves, while Nyna and Elic have Fortify staves.
