BATTLE SPEED 1 IS FASTEST!!! BATTLE SPEED 6 IS VERY VERY SLOW!!! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Final Fantasy IV (DS) FAQ/Walkthrough v0.01 | Original Date: 7/29/08 By: "Psycho Penguin" Steve McFadden | Last Update: 7/29/08 Email address: [email protected] | # of Updates: 1 http://www.angelfire.com/mac/psychopenguin/faqs | File Size: 35.1 KB =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- It's been a while since I got a FAQ done, and I have fallen in love with this awesome remake of Final Fantasy IV DS, so I figured I'd give it a shot. Hopefully this turns out better than my FF4 Advance FAQ.. then again, that game sucked. ;) =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- | [ TABLE OF CONTENTS ] =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- | 1.0 Game Basics | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | 2.0 Characters | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | 3.0 Walkthrough | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | 4.0 FAQ's | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | 5.0 Reader Tips | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | 6.0 Guides | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | 6.1 Boss Guide | | 6.2 Augment Guide | | 6.3 Shopping Guide | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | 7.0 Lists | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | 7.1 Items List | | 7.2 Weapons List | | 7.3 Armor List | | 7.4 Bestiary | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | 8.0 Secrets | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | 8.1 Side Quests | | 8.2 Level Up Spots | | 8.3 Secrets | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | 9.0 Other Information | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | X.0 Conclusion | =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Songs to help you get rolling - "Fancy" by Reba McEntire and "Rock the Casbah" (Remix) by Solar Twins. But the original version is good, too. ;) =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- | 1.0 | [ GAME BASICS ] =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- It's always a joy to write about these game basics, let me tell you. ;) I am just going to give a quick rundown of the menu and battle systems, since this game adds in some stuff that I did not know about at the time. And I spent several hours pissed off at the annoying auto battles because all you could do was attack. Now the game is a lot more fun that I know how to set up auto battles! It pays to read the manual, kids. ;) ----------- MENU SYSTEM ----------- When you are in control of the character, push the X Button to bring up the menu screen, and you will see several options to choose from. INVENTORY: Pretty basic stuff here. You have three options here. USE will allow you to use a usable item, obviously. Like a Potion for healing, or a Silver Apple to increase a character's maximum hit points. SORT will automatically sort your items on their usage. Healing items on top, weapons and armor towards the bottom. KEY ITEMS will list you key items. Here is where you can give an augment to a character, as well. MAGIC: Again, pretty self explanatory. Here, you select from one of your characters, and it shows the magic they can use. If they have usable magic outside of battle, you can also cast it from this menu. EQUIPMENT: There are three options here. EQUIP allows you to equip a weapon, armor, etc. individually. REMOVE allows you to remove equipment from a character. OPTIMIZE will automatically give you the best equipment, statistics wise, for a character, but keep in mind that sometimes this isn't always the best idea. ABILITIES: A very awesome new feature to this game is the abilities menu. Now, you can equip pretty much any five abilities you want on a character. Also, there is an auto battle slot where you can equip an ability that the character will use automatically if you put the battle into auto battle mode. For instance, you can select SUMMON -> DRAGON with Rydia, and she will automatically cast the Dragon Summon during the battle. The neat thing is, you don't have to have the ability equipped to use it in auto battle. For instance, you can have Rosa Pray automatically during auto battle, but use her Pray slot in abilities for something else you want. STATUS: This shows how much experience points the character has, their experience needed to level up, their current abilities, the abilities they know, and their vital statistics. PARTY: This allows you to switch characters around, and also invert the rows. For instance, you can have 2 people in front/3 people in back, or 3 people in front/2 people in back. SETTINGS: This allows you to change battle mode between ACTIVE (enemies attack while in menus) and WAIT (they'll be nice and wait). You can also change battle speed (1 IS FASTEST!), the automatic movement between walk and run (I like running, it's faster), and whether or not the cutscenes have voices and subtitles or not. QUICKSAVE: This allows you to save anywhere at any time. The game automatically quick saves and power off, and you lose the data when you reload the save the next time. SAVE: This allows a hard copy of the save. You can save at any save point in a dungeon, or on the world map. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- | 2.0 | [ CHARACTERS ] =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Here is where I talk about the characters for a few sentences for some reason or another. ----- CECIL ----- ********* STORYLINE ********* Cecil is a Dark Knight and everyone thinks he is a bit of a jerk at the beginning, including himself. (Note this may or may not be entirely accurate.) But he redeems himself soon enough by becoming a SPOILER and going back down to level 1, so I wouldn't waste too much time leveling up at the beginning of the game. I'm also pissed off they took out the Dark Wave attack from Final Fantasy IV SNES/PSX and replaced it with Darkness, but overall he is clearly the best character in the game. ********* ABILITIES ********* Darkness -------- Doubles his attack power, 10% hit points taken off with every attack Cover ----- Takes damage For another character if they are in critical hit points. White Magic ----------- Allows him to cast some decent white magic spells. ******** ANALYSIS ******** As he is the main character, he is clearly the best character in the game, as you may expect. He starts off as a Dark Knight, and his attack power and defense will carry you through the first part of the game when you mostly have weak mages. Like I said above, don't spend too much time leveling him up when he is a Dark Knight. When he becomes a Paladin on Mt. Ordeals, he starts off on level 1, but his statistics are great for a level 1 character. Just level him up to 15-16 there and you will be amazed by how awesome this guy is for the rest of the game. Towards the end of the game, you will want to give him Draw Attacks, Counter, and Kick. This turns him into an extreme badass and makes leveling up very easy, because he will take every single-target attack and counter with his strong physical attack. You can even set Counter -> Kick up and have him counter every attack he gets with a strong attack to every enemy in the battle! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- | 3.0 | [ WALKTHROUGH ] =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- The first thing you will notice is that the Red Wings song is totally awesome. Those of you that remember it from the SNES/PSX days knows how epic the song is, and the remixed version in this DS version is just as impressive. The second thing you will notice is the game now sometimes will have 3D cutscenes. 3D CUTSCENES! And the characters talk! And don't sound totally gay like some of the characters in certain other Final Fantasy games that will Tidus remain nameless for the Balthier sake of niceness. After a long opening cutscene and some character conversation where Cecil will question why they had to take a crystal from helpless Mysidians, the king will banish Cecil from the Red Wings and give him a weird named thing to give to the great people of Mist. (Oh yeah, there's also a battle with two Floating Eyes in this opening cutscene, but if you need help with that, you'll probably also need this advice: don't stick a DS up your ass. It might hurt.) +--------------+ + BARON CASTLE + +--------------+ You now have control of Cecil, and your main objective is to go to your room and rest, but we can do a few things first. Also, the Baron Castle song is pretty cool as well, if I do say so myself. Another new feature you will notice is a map on the bottom of the screen. This incredibly useful feature will show you a map of the floor (no duh) as well as all the treasure chests you can find. In this room, you will notice you can't do much of anything, so go down to the next floor, and now you will see three treasure chests you can pilfer. Let's do it! It's on the east side of the room, and to get to them, you must hit the switch on the wall next to it. The chests contain an ETHER, TENT, and 480 GIL. Hoo boy, you're rich! Let's go buy some booze and drink our problems away! On second thought, let's just go left and out of this place. This next section is just two sets of stairs, one on the left and one on the right, and we're coming from the stairs to the right, so let's take a minute to figure out what to do. I'll go grab a diet coke. Okay, once you're in the next room, you'll meet the next character that's of some importance (you can tell because she gets an overdone introduction that says her name AND her job class). She is Rosa, white mage, and future mother of Cecil's kids. Once they're done talking, proceed downwards, and on the next screen, go up, and you'll meet ANOTHER important character. Wow, four important characters five minutes into the game. Final Fantasy IV moves quicker than a cheerleader on game night sometimes. After he is done talking, go up to the tower on the left, watch the hilarious cutscene with the namingway, and proceed up to the second floor. Talk to the maid who will tell you your room is ready, and watch the following cutscenes. You'll end up with Cecil and Kain. Time to leave the castle! SAVE YOUR GAME ON THE OVERWORLD. You don't want to do all of that crap again. +-------+ + BARON + +-------+ Unfortunately, the town theme in Final Fantasy IV has never been one of my favorites, and the remixed version here is disappointing as well. This is a basic first town of the game. Inn, weapon shop (locked, though), items shop, etc. There are a few hidden items here, so let's get to them. Inside the Inn, you'll find a POTION near the entrance in a pot. Go up the stairs to the next floor, and it's another switch-wall thing. Hit the switch and collect the rewards on the other side: GNOMISH BREAD, EYE DROPS, and TENT. There's no need to rest at the Inn yet unless you got into some battles on the overworld map, and I did not tell you to do that so I sure hope not! Go north towards the top part of the town, then head down and to the right. You'll see a person walking around, walk past this person then go left. Follow the path to get PHOENIX DOWN x2 and a GOLD NEEDLE. There's not really much else to do in this town, so let's start leveling up in the overworld! +-----------------+ + BARON OVERWORLD + +-----------------+ The cave you need to get t is west and north, across a bridge and in between some mountain ranges, but I would take the time and level up about two or three times just to be safe. Also, buy some gold needles and potions in Baron if you feel like it. There is one particular encounter in this overworld that drove me nuts the first two times I started this game up, and that is the battle with four Cockatrices. They will cast Beak, and this is a slow Petrification that will turn your character to stone in 2 or 3 turns. If you get ambushed or get a few unlucky misses, this can cause a game over. Keep that in mind and save/rest often as you level up. When you are ready, go northwest to the cave. +-----------+ + MIST CAVE + +-----------+ Get used to this dungeon song too, you'll be hearing it a fair bit throughout the game. It's not terrible or anything, though. Namingway will become Mappingway now and will inform you of another awesome new feature that was first introduced in Star Ocean 3, but was a lot more annoying then, map completion. Basically, you start off each floor of a dungeon at zero percent, and if you map the floor completely, you get a reward. The rewards increase as you progress in the game, and if you get 100% on every floor of every dungeon, you'll get a special augment at the end of the game called Treasure Hunter that is incredibly useful if you plan on seeking out rare items. This area is basically one straIght path with very few intersections for a bit, but make sure to map every nook and cranny so you can get the reward at the end. Start by going right and then heading up the stairs, then going left and then up. You'll hear voices in your head, they talk to you, they counsel you, they understand. I like Randy Orton, ok? Moving on.. get the POTION and then go right for an EYE DROPS. Go down some steps and then left for a TENT, then go right and down for more mysterious voices and a POTION. Heal up and go up to face the boss of this area. **** BOSS FIGHT!!! ***** |-------------------------|---------------------------------------------------| | MIST DRAGON | HP | 556 | --------------------------| EXP | 1112 | | WEAK | Darkness | GIL | 0 | | ABSB | Holy | LEVELS | C 13, K 13 | |-------------------------|--------|------------------------------------------| The boss theme is a doozy as well, I rather like it. Okay, this is the first boss of a Final Fantasy game, so as you may expect, it's basically a tutorial battle of sorts. Then again, they really increased the difficulty of the bosses in this game, and I've heard people have had trouble against this boss, so don't go in thinking it'll be a totally easy fight, and you should be okay. Cecil should attack and Kain should Jump, but keep in mind that in a few turns, the Mist Dragon will turn into a mist-like form, and counter with a powerful breath attack if you try to attack it. So, just heal and defend while it is in its mist form, and have Cecil cast Darkness as well. When it goes back into its dragon form, keep up the attacking (Kain can just attack at this point) and it will die before it turns into mist again, more than likely. **** END BOSS FIGHT **** Go up and get the reward for map completion (POTION x5), and then save in the overworld. Go right to the village of Mist. +------+ + MIST + +------+ When you enter this place, the Carnelian Signet you got earlier from the King will light up and set this place on fire! You'll watch a few scenes here, as well as entering a battle you cannot win, and you will end up in a desert with a new character, Rydia. She is weak so make sure she is in the back row when the time comes. For now, just go northeast to enter the town of Kaipo. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- | 4.0 | [ FAQ'S ] =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- You have questions, I have answers. Don't forget to send any questions you have for me to [email protected] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. Is this the definitive version of Final Fantasy IV? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I happen to think that it is, although some people may disagree with me, and that's fair as I can see where they are coming from. The graphics could use some work, I admit, but the updated music was a welcome addition. I love the new augments system and how they increased the boss difficulty by giving them new tricks, so people like me who have destroyed the game a billion times can still find some challenge in it without simply needing to level up more. The voice acting is awesome, the challenge has improved enough, the new map completion system is awesome, auto battles FOR THE WIN, and overall I think this is a terrific remake and probably the best remake of a game that I can remember off the top of my head. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2. Augment system? What's this? Can you really only use them once? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Yes, once you give a character an augment, you lose it for the rest of the game, so basically keep that in mind when assigning them. The key to getting new augments from characters that don't stay with you at the end of the game is to give them augments you already have before they leave. If you don't give them any, you'll get one from them. If you give them one, they'll give you two. If you give them two, they'll give you three. It really adds a level of strategy to the game, but unfortunately newer players who don't know who's leaving when will need a guide like this one, or wait to new game plus. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. There's a new game plus now? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ There sure is, and you carry over your augments from one playthrough to the next. Therefore, you can get certain augments in the next game, and the following one after that. Unfortunately, Square only lets you play new game plus twice, for a total of three playthroughs. This is to prevent your characters from being too overpowered, which I think is lame but whatever. There's new bosses in new game plus too, but no extra dungeons like in Final Fantasy IV Advance for GBA. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- | 5.0 | [ READER TIPS ] =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- These will be coming in a future version, so stay tuned for that!
