Whats New to Etrian Odyssey II / \===============================================\ This section offers a close look at whats new with detailed information. There are quite a few differences when comparing Etrian Odyssy II to the first. I believe everyone expected there to be some New Classes. What was expected, but what wasnt? Well for me, Etrian Odyssey II is a great Sequel. Some beg to differ. Ive heard people say that this game feels like nothing more then a mere expansion with a few extra features. Well This Section will list mostly everything that is new to the Sequel. <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> ==================================== <> The New Character Classes <> TNCC ==================================== There are 3 New Classes total in Etrian Odyssey II. I wouldve liked at least one other New class in addition to the new ones we have, but what are you gonna do. The New Classes do open up many new possibilities for your party. Each of the New Classes has its advantages and each is very good. I suggest Trying each Class out, not just the new ones, to get a feel for each so you can see which suits your playing style best. ------- Gunner ======= My favorite of the new classes. Some may ask "Are Gunners the NEW Alchemist?" Yes and no. The only similarities to the Alchemist that the Gunner shares is their Elemental Attacks. The Gunner can Shoot off rounds with Fire, Ice, or Volt properties. The Gunner cannot poison enemies. The Alchemist also received a nice upgrade which allows them to use physical Elements as well. The Gunner has some very good skills, the only downfall is the high TP cost for each skill. Some of their better skills cost 11TP at only Level 1. Another Skill cost 13TP at level one. So It would be wise to pump some skill points into your Gunner's TP Up. At least to level 5. That way you can unleash your Gunners full potential Trust me, Maxed, these Skills will cost you anywhere from 13-21 TP yeah thats a lot. So 100+TP could easily be depleted in merely 5-7 turns. ---------- War Magus ========== Another Wonderful Class added to the Roster. War Magus Combines a Little of Everything into one package. The War Magus will really fit nicely in any Party. The will definitely outshine others in partys that contain a Hexer. You see the War Magus has these skills thats power is enhanced if the target has a certain status. The Hexer is great for inflicting status. So you can easily have a devastating combo on your hands. Another thing the War Magus class is good for is their ability to heal. While they wont be able to learn Revive, Salve 3, or Phoenix. They will be able to learn Cure 1,2 and 3 as well as Salve 1 and 2. They can also wield swords and staves. With a Sword in hand, your magus easily becomes a hard hitting healer. Just be ready to have some nectars ready. ------ Beast ====== Unlocked after completing the first Stratum. The Beast is the only class that needs unlocking. Some say the Beast is a Protector on Steroids. The Beast has some of the Protectors good skills or are somewhat similar to them. They have their own versions of the Protectors Provoke and Parry, which for the Beast are Preen and Wildwall. The Beast also has its own version of Aegis called Tenacity. The Protectors F. and B. Guard are quite similar to the Beast Skill Loyalty Which allows the Beast to guard and take damage in the party members place. Those arent the only Skills, the Beast can also learn En Garde. Aside from those skills the Beast will deal a tremendous amount of Damage and the Beast will have more HP then any other class. The Beast can also Heal itself and Party Members, Automatically recover from Negative Status effects, Drain an Enemy's HP, Terrorize Enemies, and a few others. <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> ======================= <> Force Skills <> FCSK ======================= Remember the basically useless boost ability in the First game. Well they have done away with that crappy technique and made something completely different. Force Skills. Force Skills are like your classes ultimate Skill. You have a force bar which you can see during battle for each character. Every time your character acts, the bar will increase slightly. After the bar fills up, you can use that Characters Force Skill. Unfortunately, the bar will reset if you happen to return to town. Something you can do is heal your HP/TP with items. Then the bar will not reset. You could also Force Grind, After resting at the inn the bar resets, so go out, and just auto battle, no skills. This way you will fill up your bar and not waste TP, You’ll be ready for any battle. You can save at a Geomagnetic Field without the force bar resetting. I will list each classes Force Skill. You can see how they differ from class to class. Each classes is unique. They allowed you to save your game, return to town, and they allowed you to return to them from town making your life alot easier. They put one of these Fields every 5 floors from the 6th. The thing about them was, say you made it 4 floors above the last field you reached, you are exhausted and need to return to town to rest. You use a Warp Wire. Now after your done in town and you want to go back, you would have to goto the field and work your way all the way back up to where you were. While that did add an extra level of difficulty to the game, they decided to even it out a little by adding these new devices, they are called Geomagnetic Poles. Geomagnetic Poles are somewhat similar to Geomagnetic Fields. While you wont be able to save at a pole and you wont be able to return to town from a pole. You will however be able to return to a Pole from town. There are many Poles throughout the Labyrinth, you will find a Geomagnetic field every 5 floors, the first field is on 6F, you will find Geomagnetic Poles every couple-few floors. The Downfall? You can only have one Pole activated at a time! They also added, well, changed I guess, what used to be a Magnet in Etrian Odyssey, is now a Warp Stone in Etrian Odyssey II. Using one will take you to the last used field. Although they havent seemed to work for me yet. I suppose maybe if you use a Pole to get into the Labyrinth, then you wont be able to use the Warp Stone. Warp Stones are good for returning to a field to save your game. The Labyrinth this time around ========== is more vibrant. The only real changes to exploring is that now you can move from side to side by hitting L or R. This was not possible in the first game. Finding the secret shortcuts were tedious. Now you can find them with ease. -------- Battles- There are a few changes to the battles. First things first, the ======== developers went and added a bunch of new battle animations making battles more impressive. Another thing that was added is the option to hit the L button. Doing so will speed up the battle speed, cause every character in the party to attack only, and you will not see any battle animations. ------------ Map Options- Not alot has changed here. When Zoomed in you can now see ============ an extra row of tiles and you can even draw Lines(Walls) on them. There are several more icons at your disposal. They went and added 2 additional Search point icons. Also added were Directional Arrows which are very helpful in marking shortcuts or directional means on the 19th Floor. They also included a locked door in addition to the regular door icon. Finally, you can mark tiles different colors. You can now mark tiles tan or sky blue in addition to the normal Blue/green color. Check out "Frequently Asked Questions" for more info on all the Map Icons. -------------- FOE Movements- FOEs are no stranger to Etrian Odyssey, but there is ============== something new about them in Etrian Odyssey II. They now can move in different ways, some can fly, and some cant be seen on the map at all. I made this section so you can get an idea of how these FOEs move. Knowing how they move will better help and understand how to manuever around them undetected. Type---------Movement ===================== Fixed--------Does not move from its inital Postion. Normal-------Follows a track only. (Lap) Nocturnal----Only Moves at night, Fixed During the day. Slow---------For every 2 Steps you take, it will move 1. Stealth------Foe can not be seen on the Map. Flying-------Can move through non walkable terrain. Confused-----Takes 3 steps forward and then 1 step back. Stalking-----Appears on map when in battle, then Pursues. Raging-------Appears when close by, then Pursues. Aggressive---Pursues when close by, otherwise is normal. ------------------ New Save Feature - They added a new quicksave feature this time around. ================== To activate it simply go into the menu and hit Start. I am glad they did this, during the first game I would always just close the DS putting it into sleep mode instead of turning it off. The reason being there really wasnt anywhere to save and you couldnt get back to the same spot as easily. Now there are Poles and a Quicksave. You can Restore all your HP and TP =========== here by sleeping or napping. It doesnt matter which you choose, both cost and do the same to your characters. When you sleep, you will wake up at 6am, when you nap you wake up at 6 pm. Of course sleeping until 6am passes a day. Something quite useful when wanting to rebattle previous FOEs or Bosses. Whats New to the inn is now you can store items there. They added a Store Goods option to the inn's Menu. After selecting it your inventory will come up. You can then select which items to store at the inn. You can use Y to select multiple items to store. The only catch is that it cost 100en for each item you store there. Whenever you want your item, you can just go there and pick it up. You can store up to 100 Items. ---------------- Sitoth Trading - This is the Shop in town where you will Buy all your ================ Weapons, Armor, Accessories, and general items. You also Sell all the loot you obtained in the labyrinth. Selling the loot will unlock new stuff you can buy. The new additions to the shop are decent. What I like is that now on the bottom screen, instead of seeing the Map, you can see your characters and what they have equipped. You can hit L or R to change the character you are Viewing. What I dont like is that you can no longer open the Menu at the shop. I generally liked being able to open the menu because I liked to see what Items I did/didnt have. I do this because once again Etrian Odyssey failed to put in a space that mentions how many of the item you are viewing you have in your possession. Since you can no longer open the menu, I just go into the sell option to quickly view what items I do have. They did however add a Change Equipment option, where you can do just that conveniently on the bottom screen while at the shop. --------------- Duke's Palace - The Duke's Palace is where you take on all the main =============== Missions associated with the games story. There is also an option to view the Monsters youve seen and items you collected. The Newest addition is you can now also see the weapons you have Collected/Unlocked in the shop. ----------------- Explorers Guild - The Explorer's Guild, its where all your party creating ================= will go down. You can also Rest or Retire your Characters if needed. Whats new this time around? Well, thats a good question. Not a lot, but there is stuff that is new. First, you can now change the name of your Guild for a small fee. I think its 1000en, Not a bad deal if you ask me. Another thing that is new, not to mention completely awesome, is now when you want to Rest your Character, instead of the character dropping 10 levels, they will only drop 5. Makes Resting an easier task. When you Rest the character that rested will drop 5 levels but all their skill points will be reset. You only get as many skill points as you would normally have at your current level after resting. When you Retire, you give up your character and get to create a new one. This new one is supposed to be trained by the character you just retired. It will be half the level of the retiring Character, but will not be higher then 30. The New character will get a nice stat bonus plus extra skill points. The Higher the character that is retiring is, the better the bonus. Highlights = Climax, Viper, Drain, Binding Skills, Bait The Dark Hunter, One of my favorite classes. They are a devastating force to be reckoned with. Their ability to use Whips and Swords is also nice. Some may say to only go the way of one. I like to mix up a little of both. Especially since doing so will grant you the Bait Skill. If you arent into Binding, Whips do not offer that much. So Binding is really like the Whips main purpose. Well I will Explain the benefits of each weapon's skills below. In addition to the Front Row. Dark Hunters can be used in the Back row and be just as effective. They wont deal as much damage, but they will Bind or inflict status effects just as well. Whips allow The Dark Hunter to inflict Poison with the Skill Viper. Viper is a great Skill that will only cost 5 Skill Points to MAX. You also have the three Binding Skills. Each individually either Binds the Arms, Legs, or Head. The one you chose to Put points into is soley up to you. A lot of Bosses devastating moves can be disabled with arm bindings. See the Boss FAQ for more info on that. Another Whip Skill is Ecstasy. Ecstasy seems to team up perfectly with the Dark Hunters Force Skill Dominate. Ecstasy deals a lot of damage to completely bound enemies. Other then Dominate, completely Binding an enemy is Rare. You can however use the Binding Skills of other allies. The Final Whip Skill is Climax. Climax is an Instant Death Skill. You really should get Climax to a high level. Having it at a High Level, you will be able to use it to its full potential. You should have it at least LV.6, which will instantly Kill when an enemy's HP is below 25%. The Sword Skills are equally as good, if not better, as Whips. Sword Skills are for inflicting Status effects. While a Dark Hunter's Status inflictions are nothing compared to that of a Hexer, they are still fairly decent. The Dark Hunter can inflict sleep, Paralyze, Confusion, and Petrify. If you have Whips also your Dark hunter can Inflict Poison too. Not Bad. But if you want want to learn the full line of status inflicting skills, You more then likely wont have much room for others. One other Sword Skill, that I think is the best, is Drain. Drain will deal good damage and when MAXed all the damage dealt with it will heal your Dark Hunter. Drain is another skill that only goes up to LV.5, which makes MAXing it a lot easier. While using this skill your Dark Hunter will rarely need healing. Now the benefit of pumping points into both Whips and Swords is Bait and Magibait. The big momma chicken of Skills for the Dark Hunter. Bait does great damage when maxed and will counter every hit taken in the front row. To use Bait to its fullest I highly suggest placing your Dark Hunter in the middle of the Front Row. When placed there, Ive seen the Dark Hunter Counter 5 times in just one turn, each hit doing great damage. Touch Skill Highlights = Cure, Salve, Revive, Caduceus, Phoenix, CPR, TP Regen The Medic, one of my favorite classes. I love what Atlus did with the Medic this time around. I can have a front line Battle ready Medic that is great for dealing damage as well as healing my Party Memebers. If you want to go with the battle Medic, I suggest doing it after retiring a character. The additional Skill Points and Stat boost are Amazing for a Front Line Medic. I recently retired my LV.70 Back Line Healing only Medic and recruited a Front Line Medic. Now, my Medic deals more damage then most of my characters. If you want a Front Line Medic, You will definitely want the Skill Caduceus. Caduceus cost a lot of TP, but the damage it deals out, especially for a Medic, is outstanding. Unlocking Caduceus will require STR Up with 10 Skill Points and VIT Up with 5. After unlocking Caduceus why not just go ahead and MAX out VIT Up. The Extra defense will be nice for you Medic. Another thing You should get, but at a later level, is TP Regen. TP Regen will go along great with Caduceus's high TP cost. Not to mention TP Up is a must have. I suggest keeping the Skill Points used on Healing Skills at a minimum. Just raise them enough so they do their job. I suggest having Cure 1+2, Revive, and Phoenix. If you have the Points then a Salve 1 or 2 will go nice. Now if you just want an old fashioned Medic for the Back Line, then you should be ignoring Caduceus, STR Up, and VIT Up all together. Focus all your Skill Points into healing and support. Even take a chance with CPR. From my Experience, CPR is a rather good skill. Youll be surprised how often it will save your Party. What would I do without my Medic, Id probably be forced to spend a bunch of Money on healing items. If you dont want to spend a bunch of Money on healing items, then I suggest every party should contain at least one Medic or at least one Warmagus, one of the NEW classes. The only thing about the Warmagus is, they lack the skill Revive. The Medic ditches Immunize from the original game, which really was a very good skill which boosted both the party's physical and elemental defense. Unfortunately it isnt Present in EO2. Dont worry, they threw in a couple of new Skills that can be rather useful, that is, if you feel like spending the Skill points Required to dig them out. A class that you needed to unlock in the first game. Well in this game the Ronin class is available from the start. The Ronin is a strong arm with low defense. They have these stance skills that allow them to learn many different types of slashes and they can even add elements to their blades. What is new to EO2 is that you no longer have to waste a turn to set the stance you want to perform a skill from Which is definitely a plus. You could decide to only take your Ronin down one path in terms of stances. There are 3 different stances total with 4 skills each, 2 of which are elemental. The Ronin also has some good skills that dont require a stance. Overall, the Ronin is a Powerful class, although the low defense is something to watch out for, always give your Ronin your best armor, they will need it. The Ronin is also able to perform all Elements and all Phsyical Elements. The Ronin is stronger, but the Landsknecht makes up for it with their nice defense. They can use two different types of weapons, Axes and Swords. I use to perfer the swords mainly because the Chaser Skills were exclusive to swords only, but now they arent, you can use Axes with the chaser skills as well. So I have to admit, the Axe Skills are looking alot more solid this time around. After seeing their breakdown I have to say they look like they out weigh the Swords, but thats for you to decide.
