                                  I. Intro

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

     Hello and welcome to my second script dump guide.  Actually, this is my
first guide that I'm doing solo.  My first guide I did with DavidK (best known
for his Breath of Fire 3 strategy guide). Ever since BoF3, I've been
interested in text dumping. It's like digging in some ancient ruins and
finding a long lost artifact that answers everyone's questions (or make new
ones). OK, enough of my babbling, on to the guide. :)

Here is the game script, which contains all of the game's story-related
dialogue and text. The script is formatted with the following key punctuation:

Anything within <arrows> is author-composed comments and descriptions of the
action that accompanies the in-game text and dialogue.

Anything within "quotes" is choice text. Example: "Yes" or "No" type choices
that you face in the game will be in "quotes".

And that's all you need to know to properly read this script!

----------------------------------Prologue------------------------------------

Ever since the solar eclipse of 2035, my life has never been the same. It was
then that I realized that I, Soma Cruz, am the rebirth of Dracula... It was in
his castle that I learned the truth... That I possessed the power to seize the
souls of my enemies. That evil power almost engulfed me, but my friends pulled
me from the brink. About a year has passed since then, and I thought my
troubles were over...

Mina Hakuba: Ha ha! Are you serious?
Soma Cruz: Yeah, and that's when Hammer decided to--

<Mina approaches Soma>

Mina Hakuba: Wait... Soma, can I ask you something?
Soma Cruz: Yeah, of course, Mina. What's wrong?
Mina Hakuba: It's been a year since it all happened, hasn't it?
Soma Cruz: Yeah, just about.
Mina Hakuba: And what was it called? You know, the ability to use the power of
             monsters?
Soma Cruz: You mean the power of dominance?
           I lost it when we escaped Dracula's Castle, remember?
Mina Hakuba: I know, but... It's just that I get this terrible feeling
             inside...
Soma Cruz: It's probably nothing... Look, don't worry, okay?
           This past year, I haven't been able to use any of the powers I
           gained. And--

<Celia appears. Mina hides behind Soma>

???: You... You're Soma Cruz, aren't you?
Soma Cruz: Uh... Yeah... And you are?
???: You may call me Celia.

<Celia points towards Soma>

Celia Fortner: But not for long...
               Come forth, my servants!

<Celia summons a skeleton. Mina screams.>

Soma Cruz: What?!
           Mina, get back!

<Mina walks back>

Soma Cruz: Damn it! Of all the worst--
???: Soma! You back off, too!

<Arikado Appears>

Mina Hakuba: Mr. Arikado!
Celia Fortner: Genya Arikado, the guardian?! Hmph! You shall not interfere!

<Celia casts a barrier>

Genya Arikado: A barrier!
               Quick, Soma! Use this!

<Arikado throws a knife through the barrier to Soma. Soma then fights a
Skeleton, Bone Archer, and a Golem, gaining each of their souls>

Celia Fortner: Soma Cruz, I shall see your demise. That is certain. Using
               whatever means...

<Celia disappears>

Soma Cruz: Wait!
Genya Arikado: Save your energy. You won't catch her now.
Soma Cruz: Damn it!
Mina Hakuba: Soma, are you all right?
Soma Cruz: Yeah, I'm fine. But that power... It returned! Arikado, what's
           going on?
Genya Arikado: The power didn't "return." It was always with you.
               You just never had a need for it since you fled the castle.
               And that set free all the souls that you had gained dominance
               over.
Soma Cruz: You mean I couldn't use the power because I was never in any
           danger? Hmm. Anyway, who was that woman? She seemed to know you.
Genya Arikado: Celia Fortner. She's the priestess of a new and rapidly growing
               cult. We suspected she was up to something, so we've been
               keeping tabs on her.
Mina Hakuba: But why would someone like that come after Soma?
Genya Arikado: They want to resurrect the lord of darkness.
Like some sought to do with Dracula.
Soma Cruz: I guess they don't like the fact that I didn't become the "lord of
           darkness."
Genya Arikado: Not only that, they intend to create a new lord by eliminating
               you.
Mina Hakuba: E-Eliminating?
Genya Arikado: But Soma, you don't need to get any more involved with this.
               Let us deal with it.

<Arikado leaves>

Soma Cruz: That woman...
           She said she would "see my demise."

<Soma Turns to Mina>

Mina Hakuba: Soma...

<fade out>

Several days later...

Soma Cruz: So, the cult's base is here.
           Hammer's info wasn't so iffy after all.
???: Gahaha! You doubted my word?!

<Hammer appears>

Soma Cruz: H-Hammer? What are you doing here?

<Hammer approaches Soma>

Hammer: What, are ya dense? Who told ya 'bout this place? Wait, it was me
Soma Cruz: Well, yeah, but...
Hammer: Hey, you got your mind on doin' somethin' wicked, huh? I want in,
        buddy.

<Hammer rubs his chin>

Hammer: And, hey, what happened to that pretty little lady? You remember,
        right?
Soma Cruz: You mean Yoko? She's not coming. In fact, I haven't told a soul.

<Hammer slouches down in disappointment>

Hammer: Huh? She ain't comin'? Well, why not?!

<Hammer returns to normal>

Hammer: Aw, man... Well, since I'm here, I'd better make the best of it.
        I guess I'm back in business, and you're my customer!
Soma Cruz: Hammer, look, I'm saying this for your own good. You really should
           leave.
Hammer: Can't do that, I'm afraid.
        I know when someone's in trouble and I'm not just gonna leave ya here.
Soma Cruz: Okay... I appreciate it.
Hammer: I'll scope out the area and find a spot to set up shop.
        See ya around!

<Hammer starts to walk away, but stops and slouches again>

Hammer: Man, why wouldn't he just tell her about this...?

<Hammer leaves>

Soma Cruz: ...


---------------------Meeting Yoko and Julius at the bridge--------------------

Soma Cruz: Huh?
           Those two...

<Soma approaches Yoko and Julius>

Yoko Belnades: Oh! Soma!
Julius Belmont: ...
Soma Cruz: Yoko. Julius. What are you two doing here?
Yoko Belnades: Funny you should ask that. We got wind of this cult from a tip
               by Arikado. I'm investigating with Mr. Belmont. I'm sure you
               remember him, the hunter.
Julius Belmont: Soma, please understand. If the darkness draws you in... I
                have no choice but to destroy you.
Soma Cruz: Yes, I know...
Julius Belmont: Then, there is no reason for you to be here.
Yoko Belnades: That's right. You're only putting yourself in danger.
Soma Cruz: That Celia woman... Not only was she after me, shie tried to harm
           Mina, too. I'm not gonna stop until I find her.
Julius Belmont: You're determined, I see.
                Then, I have nothing more to say.

<Julius starts to leave>

Yoko Belnades: Wait. Wait, Julius. How can you just say that?
Julius Belmont: I'll be going now.
Yoko Belnades: Wait a second. I'm coming, too.
Julius Belmont: No, Yoko, you stay. We'll need a contact here, just in case.
Yoko Belnades: Hey, wait! You can't just...!

<Julius jumps over the closed bridge and leaves>

Yoko Belnades: Men! They're so selfish!

<Yoko turns to Soma>

Yoko Belnades: I bet you have no intention of going home, either.
Soma Cruz: Well, uh...
Yoko Belnades: Fine, then. Here, take this.

<Yoko gives Soma Magic Seal 1>

Soma Cruz: And this is?
Yoko Belnades: A Magic Seal.
Soma Cruz: Magic Seal?
Yoko Belnades: The cult leader appears to create gates that draw the power of
               darkness. Monsters exposed to that power are said to be
               invincible.
Soma Cruz: So how am I supposed to destroy them?
Yoko Belnades: That's where this Magic Seal comes in.
               Want to practice using it?

<Decision>
Soma Cruz: "Sure, I'll give it a try."
           "No, that's okay."

<Sure, I'll give it a try>
Yoko Belnades: Good. Now watch closely. Draw a figure exactly as shown.

<seal is shown>

Yoko Belnades: Okay, now you try it.

<if you lift the pen>
Yoko Belnades: Um... The Magic Seal has to be drawn in one stroke.
               You can't draw the pattern in pieces.

<if you draw the seal incorrectly>
Yoko Belnades: Wait, hold on. That's not the right shape. The small circles
               indicate where you have to touch. Don't be too hasty, okay? Oh,
               yes, and you also have to touch the points in the proper
               sequence.

<if you draw it too slow>
Yoko Belnades: That's too slow. The Magic Seal won't be created if it's not
               drawn within a set time.


<follows one of the three failure messages>
Soma Cruz: I get it.
Yoko Belnades: Want to try again?

<Decision>
Soma Cruz: "Okay, once more."
           "No, it's okay."

<Okay, once more.>
Yoko Belnades: Okay, I'll show you again.

<seal is shown>

Yoko Belnades: Okay, now you try it.

<if successful>
Yoko Belnades: Good, that's it. Just don't forget how you did that.

<No, (it's) that's okay>
Yoko Belnades: Oh... Well, that's fine, then.

<after the tutorial>
Yoko Belnades: Oh, one more thing. You can practice drawing a Magic Seal
               anytime. If you're not sure how to do it, you should definitely
               practice.
Soma Cruz: Got it.
Yoko Belnades: A Magic Seal activates on its own when it's needed. Give it a
               try and see. Okay, now... Let's go, Soma.
Soma Cruz: Huh? Go where?
Yoko Belnades: It's a dead end here.
               Only Julius could get in from somewhere like this.
               We should go back and find a different way in.
Soma Cruz: All right. If we have to...
Yoko Belnades: There's no shelter from the rain and wind here, either.
               Will you escort me?
Soma Cruz: Uh... Sure, of course.
Yoko Belnades: Thanks. Let's go.

------------------------------At the first seal-------------------------------

Yoko Belnades: This door... It looks like you'll need a Magic Seal right away.

<Soma breaks the seal on the door and it opens>

Yoko Belnades: Most likely, you'll need a a Magic Seal to finish off the
               monster in here. Just be calm and focus. I'll be waiting here.
Soma Cruz: No problem.

-----------------------After defeating the Flying Armor-----------------------

Yoko Belnades: You did it!
Soma Cruz: Using Magic Seals is a piece of cake.
Yoko Belnades: Don't be too sure. That Magic Seal won't be useful forever.
Soma Cruz: What do you mean?
Yoko Belnades: They will probably prepare new and more complex patterns for
               Magic Seals.
Soma Cruz: Hmm...
Yoko Belnades: But not to worry. They'll have the Magic Seal patterns hidden
               somewhere. If they don't, the gates to the dark side will be
               useless.
Soma Cruz: I get it.
Yoko Belnades: I won't keep holding you up as my escort anymore. I can manage
               now.
Soma Cruz: You sure? In that case, I'll be going now.
Yoko Belnades: Oh, there is one more thing though. Julius may have some new
               information, so come see me if you're close by. And Soma,
               please don't do anything reckless.
Soma Cruz: Count on it. You take care, too, Yoko.

---------------------First meeting with Dario and Dmitrii---------------------

Soma Cruz: !!
           You!

<Dario, Dmitrii, and Celia appear>

Celia Fortner: Ah...you've come. Just as I predicted.
Soma Cruz: Celia Fortner...
???: You're kiddin', right? You tellin' me this punk's the lord of darkness?
     Ha!
???: Judging matters merely on appearance? Tsk, tsk. Simpletons are so vexing.

<Dario Turns to Dmitrii>

???: What'd ya call me, Dmitrii?!
Dmitrii Blinov: Hmph. I merely stated a fact.
Celia Fortner: Dario, Dmitrii. Both of you, enough.
Dario Bossi: Tch!

<Dario turns back towards Soma>

Dmitrii Blinov: ...
Celia Fortner: Excuse their behavior. Welcome to our House, home to our
               Church.
Soma Cruz: You talk as if you were expecting me...
Celia Fortner: You fear that you will imperil innocents for who you are and
               can become. Am I not correct?
Soma Cruz: ...Yes.
           I fell for your ruse.
           Why would you want to resurrect the dark lord?
Celia Fortner: We do not desire the dark lord, per se. For god to be perfectly
               good, there must be a being of perfect darkness.
Soma Cruz: That has nothing to do with me.
           If this world does need a perfect dark being, one should emerge.
           Isn't that how it works?
Celia Fortner: Perhaps that is so. And perhaps it is not. What is true,
               however, is that the power of darkness steadily grows faint.
               The lord of darkness must be enthroned without fail. And not a
               moment too soon.
Soma Cruz: But that doesn't mean...

<Dario starts to approach Soma>

Dario Bossi: I heard enough already. Let's rip this punk apart right here and
             now!
Celia Fortner: Have patience. He will try to stop me using whatever means.
               There is no need for haste.

<Dario turns towards Celia>

Dario Bossi: Hunh? What are you saying?
Dmitrii Blinov: He is in our hands now. We can destroy him whenever, however
                we wish.
Celia Fortner: Correct. This will also serve as a test for the both of you.
Dmitrii Blinov: I see.
Dario Bossi: Wait a second! Test? What test? I didn't hear about that!
Dmitrii Blinov: Are you incapable of thinking even a little? There is but one
                dark lord, yet there are two candidates--you and I.
Dario Bossi: Duh! I know that!
Dmitrii Blinov: Then get this through your hollow skull. Whoever defeats this
                boy becomes chosen as the lord of darkness.
Dario Bossi: Oh, I get it now... Yeah, okay!

<Dario turns back to Soma>

Dario Bossi: This'll make it fun!

<Dario taunts Soma>

Dario Bossi: Next time I see you, punk, I'll burn you to ashes!

<Dario leaves>

Dmitrii Blinov: I shall depart, also. I see no significance in my presence
                here at this time.

<Dmitrii leaves>

Soma Cruz: So those two are the dark lord's candidates...
Celia Fortner: Correct.
               They were born at the same time as Dracula's demise.
               They are inheritors of Dracula's dark powers.
Soma Cruz: But that's no guarantee that they can become the dark lord.
Celia Fortner: They can. By shattering Dracula's soul. If you wish to stop me,
               I shall be waiting for you at the top. I may even change my
               mind if you survive my traps
<Celia leaves>

-----------------------------Battle with Dmitrii------------------------------

Soma Cruz: ?!

<Dmitrii kills a Malachi with it's own attack>

Dmitrii Blinov: Oh, excuse me for that rather uncouth scene.
Soma Cruz: You're one of the dark lord candidates...
Dmitrii Blinov: Dmitrii Blinov.
Soma Cruz: You were fighting a demon. Does that mean you've forsaken Celia?
Dmitrii Blinov: You have drawn the wrong conclusion. This is merely a ritual
                to gain power.
Soma Cruz: A ritual?
Dmitrii Blinov: You witnessed it, yes? Unless you are as dim as Dario, you
                should have discerned my ability.
Soma Cruz: So, that's what it is.
           The ability to copy magic attacks...
Dmitrii Blinov: Ah, how observant of you.
                Now, since there is no one else to disrupt us...
Soma Cruz: Hold it.
           I don't have any reason to fight you.
           Do you have any reason for going along with Celia's scheme?
Dmitrii Blinov: None whatsoever.
Soma Cruz: Well, then!
Dmitrii Blinov: However, I have this power. I wish to know the meaning of it,
                its significance. Is that not a natural desire?
Soma Cruz: And for that, you want to become the dark lord?
Dmitrii Blinov: Is that so wrong? Refining my power will finally provide me
                with answers. Let us begin.

after the battle:

Soma Cruz: It's over!
Dmitrii Blinov: Tch, I came up short, it seems...
Soma Cruz: I won't take your life. Just give up.
Dmitrii Blinov: You dare pity me?
                Soon you shall be the one that will be pitied upon.
                Gwaah!

<Dmitrii dies>

Soma Cruz: What?
           Dead? That can't be?!

<Soma absorbs Dmitrii's soul>

Soma Cruz: Unh!
           What was that?
           Did I gain dominance over a human soul?
           No, I gained no power... But...what was that light?

----------------------------First fight with Dario----------------------------

Dario Bossi: Here at last! You really stepped outta bounds, punk!
Soma Cruz: Huh?
Dario Bossi: Dmitrii. I'm talking about Dmitrii.
Soma Cruz: I didn't mean to kill your friend. I didn't finish--
Dario Bossi: Hunh? Whaddaya sayin'? I wanted to pummel that uppity jerk
             myself!
Soma Cruz: Doesn't your friend's death mean anything to you?
Dario Bossi: Him? Ha! You gotta be jokin'. Ah, let's get on with this already.
Soma Cruz: Why do you want to become the dark lord anyway?
Dario Bossi: Why?
       Look at this power!!

<Dario burns everything around him>

Dario Bossi: Can you imagine how crazy it'll be with even more power?!
Soma Cruz: You're insane...
Dario Bossi: And you yap way too much!
       Come on, punk! I'll roast ya to a cinder!

<After the fight>

Soma Cruz: You can give up trying to become the dark lord.
Dario Bossi: A punk like you... You're not walkin' away from this...

<Dario starts to cast a powerful spell>

Celia Fortner: Dario, enough.

<Celia appears>

Dario Bossi: Celia... Don't try to stop me! A man's got his pride!
Celia Fortner: I know that. But I am not prepared to lose the last candidate.
               We'll pull back for now. I have another plan...

<Celia casts Dario away>

Dario Bossi: Wroaah!
Celia Fortner: I underestimated you.
               But this game isn't over yet.
               I shall be waiting on the uppermost floor. Come if you dare!

<Celia leaves>

----------------Meeting with Arikado at the Demon Guest House-----------------

Genya Arikado: Soma!

<Soma turns around>

Soma Cruz: ??

<Arikado appears>

Genya Arikado: I told you not to get involved, didn't I?
Soma Cruz: Arikado! What are you doing here?
           I thought that you were protecting Mina...
Genya Arikado: Mina is fine. My colleagues are providing protection.
               Besides, keeping you under observation gets priority.
Soma Cruz: You're still treating me as if I were the dark lord. Haven't you
           seen enough?
Genya Arikado: I need you to understand. You are considered to be extremely
               dangerous...
Soma Cruz: ...
Genya Arikado: But since you're here, I suppose I can't stop you. While under
               my supervision, I'm prepared to overlook use of excessive
               force. Besides, we can't just allow this cult to carry on this
               way.
Soma Cruz: Th-Thanks. I appreciate it.
Genya Arikado: Also, Mina entrusted me with this. It's for you.

<Arikado gives Soma Mina's Talisman>

Soma Cruz: What? A letter? And a talisman?

<Soma turns around to read the letter in private>

Mina Hakuba: Dear Soma,
             If you're reading this, you've probably gone after that cult. I
             had a feeling you would when you disappeared after that incident.
             I know that you worry about me, Soma. But I worry just as much
             about you, too. I won't ask you to come back right away because
             you're way too stubborn. But please promise me that whatever
             happens, you'll come back unharmed. Oh, and don't forget about
             the talisman! I'm sure it'll come in handy. I'll be praying for
             you.
             Always, Mina
Soma Cruz: Mina...
Genya Arikado: Soma.
Soma Cruz: !!

<Soma turns back towards Arikado>

Genya Arikado: Brief me on the situation. What have you discovered?
Soma Cruz: Uh... Sure.
           (I described what I had learned so far to Arikado.)
Genya Arikado: Understood. But the fact that Celia mentioned a "plan" doesn't
               sound good.
Soma Cruz: The only thing I can do is keep climbing towards the top floor.
Genya Arikado: Fine, you do that. In the meantime, I'll try to track down
               Dario's whereabouts.

<Arikado leaves>

--------------------Meeting Julius at the Condemned Tower---------------------

Julius Belmont: ...
Soma Cruz: Julius. What are you doing?
Julius Belmont: Huh? Oh, it's you. This door is sealed by a powerful barrier.
                Something's behind it, too.
Soma Cruz: Do you sense something bad?
Julius Belmont: Yes.
                I can feel it in my gut, and it doesn't feel good.

<Julius turns toward Soma>

Julius Belmont: Unfortunately, it's impossible to check what's behind the
                door.
Soma Cruz: Why is that?
Julius Belmont: The barrier's too strong.
                I may be able to crack it, but just a bit.
                It'd be better to contact Yoko and await help.
                What about you?
Soma Cruz: Well...
           (I described what I had discovered to Julius.)
Julius Belmont: The dark lord's candidates. It sounds as if that should be my
                next target. I will see about joining Arikado.

-------------------Meeting Celia at the Cursed Clock Tower--------------------

Soma Cruz: ?!
Celia Fortner: You've only come this far?
               You seem to be taking this rather leisurely.
Soma Cruz: What are you trying to say?
Celia Fortner: Dario has grown stronger by fusing with the demon of fire I
               summoned for him.

<Arikado appears>

Genya Arikado: I see. Is that your plan?
Julius Belmont: Soma, back off.

<Julius appears>

Soma Cruz: Arikado! Julius, too!
Celia Fortner: Your presence is without meaning. No one can stop Dario now.
               The emergence of the new lord of darkness is all but certain
               now.

<Celia disappears>

Genya Arikado: Julius! I'm sensing a surge of magical power coming from the
               river. It must be Dario. You go after him. I'll track down
               Celia.

<Arikado leaves>

Julius Belmont: Soma, from here on, you stay away and let us take care of it.

<Julius leaves>

---------------------Finding Julius at the Silenced Ruins---------------------

Julius Belmont: Ungh!

<Julius is shown crouched in pain>

Soma Cruz: Julius!

<Soma approaches Julius>

Julius Belmont: I'm fine. Don't worry.

<Julius turns to Dario, who is now shown>

Dario Bossi: What? You done already? So much for the "legendary" Belmont!
Julius Belmont: Hmph. Talk all you want...
Dario Bossi: Hey, punk! Looks like I can get me a little payback from ya! But
             I'm not at full power just yet... The throne chamber on the top
             floor--you were headin' there, weren't ya? That's where we'll
             settle scores once and for all.

<Dario disappears>

Julius Belmont: Watch it. He's tough. Especially for me, since I can't use
                Magic Seals.
Soma Cruz: Hold on, Julius. You can't use Magic Seals?
Julius Belmont: Uh-huh. What about it?
Soma Cruz: Well, didn't you run into monsters that you couldn't destroy?
Julius Belmont: No, I destroyed them before they could reconstitute. They
                weren't a problem. But this time, I don't think that'll work.
Soma Cruz: (You've got to be joking. That should've been impossible.)
Julius Belmont: Forget about me. You can go on. I'll be fine.
Soma Cruz: He's expecting me. I'll be on my way.
Julius Belmont: Watch out for his fire attacks. But you can do it. Don't
                disappoint me.
Soma Cruz: Got it.

----------------------------Final fight with Dario----------------------------

Dario Bossi: What took ya so long?
Soma Cruz: Hmph, let's finish this. I'll show you why you can't become the
           dark lord.
Dario Bossi: Hah! Even Belmont was no match for me. You think a punk like YOU
             can win?
Soma Cruz: Was there ever any doubt? Power is nothing if you don't know how to
           use it. I'll never lose to a fool dominated by his own power like
           you.
Dario Bossi: Well, what's the point of power if you don't use it? Don't act as
             if you know! It's about survival of the fittest! Let's see you
             try to survive this time! Graaaah!!

<if you defeat Dario>

Soma Cruz: I cut off the power from the dark side using a Magic Seal.
           Give up. It's over...
Dario Bossi: B-But...
Genya Arikado: Get away from him, Soma!

<Dario starts exploding>

Dario Bossi: Nooooooooooo!

<Dario dies, Arikado appears>

Genya Arikado: He couldn't resist the demon that had fused with his soul.
Soma Cruz: You're saying he lost to the demon's power?
Genya Arikado: He perhaps could have been saved if the demon was cut free
               from his soul, but... Don't let it concern you. That's just
               what happens when you let your hunger for power overwhelm you.
Soma Cruz: ...
           Arikado... What became of Celia?

           felt something enter me...like a soul under domination.

               Come, we'll meet with Yoko right away and head for the Church.

Dmitrii Blinov: I should thank my lucky stars for making good my escape. I
                managed to loosen myself when the boy's emotions shifted
                momentarily.
Celia Fortner: I thought you'd died...
Dmitrii Blinov: Shedding my former body was a desperate gamble. But it has
                worked out quite well.
Genya Arikado: You copied the power of dominance from Soma?
Dmitrii Blinov: Ah, so you understand. I touched the boy's soul and copied his
                ability. And I have been doubly lucky in finding a suitable
                replacement for my body.
Celia Fortner: Y-You obtained the same power as Soma Cruz?
Dmitrii Blinov: When I fought the boy, I confirmed one thing. Dracula's heir
                need not be the inheritor of the dark lord's power. I only
                need to possess the same ability to become the true dark
                lord's heir. And of course, only I could gain that ability.

<Arikado approaches Dmitrii>

Genya Arikado: I won't allow that.
Dmitrii Blinov: Have patience, Arikado. Or perhaps I should address you with
                your real name? When the boy began his dark transformation, I
                scanned memories of his past lives. Make one move, and the boy
                will die. You don't wish that, do you?
Genya Arikado: Hmph.

<Soma gets up>

Soma Cruz: Does becoming the dark lord really mean that much to you?
Dmitrii Blinov: I have told you before. I wish to learn what my power
                signifies. Celia. I must gain dominance over more powerful
                demons. I will surpass the boy.
Celia Fortner: So be it.

<Celia points towards Soma>

Celia Fortner: Soma Cruz, I take back what I have said to you.
               It seems that death is your only destiny.

Genya Arikado: I imagine that they've gone to the basement of the tower
               next to the castle. A foul, unearthly energy emanates from
               there. There must be a portal to the dark side that fuels the
               castle's existence.
Soma Cruz: I see...
Genya Arikado: Don't do anything rash. You're not in any shape to fight now.
               Let us handle this.
Soma Cruz: His power is mine. I must be the one to stop him.
Genya Arikado: ...
               Fine... But Julius and I will go in first.

                that, she even helped me take care of that pesky Arikado.

               you. His soul can't withstand a power that intense.

<Dmitrii casts Arikado out of the Abyss>

Dmitrii Blinov: I am the chosen one! I am the dark lord!

               The dark lord is the entity opposite to god.

Soma Cruz: Then that means there will always be a need for a dark lord.
           All because I ducked out from becoming the next in line!
Genya Arikado: Don't misconstrue me! Perhaps there is a need for the dark
               lord... But there is no reason at all for you to become the
               dark lord.
Soma Cruz: But if it weren't for me, none of this would have happened!
Genya Arikado: You're neither a god nor a demon.
               You're only human.
               You have no chance at ever achieving perfection.
               Or are you saying you want to be the dark lord?

This is the the various pieces of dialogue that's semi-randomly chosen
whenever you talk to Yoko or Hammer.  The text here is still a bit cluttered,
because I have yet to think of a good way to organize it all.  Also, gives the
randomness of the text, there might be a couple of pieces of text that were
cut. If you see anything that you know never shows up in the game, please
email me and I'll fix it.

Soma Cruz: I think it's going okay.

Soma Cruz: I think I'm only getting started.

Soma Cruz: I think I need to buckle down for the last dash.

Yoko Belnades: I guess you're trying hard. So, how may I help you?

Yoko Belnades: Oh, Soma.
               I've got word from Julius. Would you like to hear it?
Soma Cruz: Of course.
Yoko Belnades: Let's see...

Yoko Belnades: There is a room in which time has stopped. Something may happen
               if you use magic to affect the flow of time.

Yoko Belnades: There are some switches that only respond to hammers.
               Unfortunately, Julius doesn't know why they were made.

Yoko Belnades: You can get through tight spaces if you could switch places
               with a small object. With your abilities, Soma, there may be a
               way to do that.

Yoko Belnades: There appear to be monsters that can slip in and out of
               mirrors. I wonder what you would be able to do if you were to
               dominate their souls...

Yoko Belnades: There are rooms with panels that can be moved around like a
               picture puzzle. There are also controls for sliding the panels
               to make a picture. I think some rooms can't be entered unless
               the puzzles are solved.

Yoko Belnades: There are walls that only react to certain kinds of spells.
               Since you have the power of dominance, you should try various
               spells on them. Watch the walls closely. You should be able to
               see what needs to be done.

Soma Cruz: I see.
Yoko Belnades: That's what Julius had to report. Anything else today?

Yoko Belnades: Oh, do you still need me?

Yoko Belnades: Hi, Soma. What would you like today?

Yoko Belnades: Soma, please don't do anything reckless.

               him. Apparently, people call him Dmitrii the Mirror.

Yoko Belnades: He always lurks behind the scenes and never comes out in the
               open.
Soma Cruz: I see.
Yoko Belnades: That's all I have. Do you need anything else?

Yoko Belnades: Hi, Soma. Is it true that your power of dominance was copied?
Soma Cruz: It's true.
           Dmitrii was alive inside me.
           And there, he directly copied my power.
Yoko Belnades: I didn't know that was possible...

               between two weapons?

               that monster's soul, it could help you in fights. You would be
               able to switch between two weapons to suit the situation.

Soma Cruz: Both the dark lord's candidates are gone. But Celia's not done.

           If I don't, I won't know what she's scheming.
Yoko Belnades: That's true. But you be careful, you hear?

Soma Cruz: What can you tell me about that Celia woman?
Yoko Belnades: All I know is that she's the priestess of this cult. And the
               fact that she has the ability to open gates to the dark side.

Yoko Belnades: Mainly summon monsters and demons. She also creates zones that
               that draw energy from the dark side. You'll need magic seals to
               close those gates.

Yoko Belnades: Oh, hi, Soma. Are you getting homesick?
Soma Cruz: No. Not especially. Why do you ask?
Yoko Belnades: It's no use to lie. You haven't seen Mina in a long time.
               I bet you really want to see her badly.

Yoko Belnades: I knew you'd get all adamant about this. I hit the bull's eye.

Yoko Belnades: Ahahaha. But you wouldn't fight for Mina unless you felt that

Soma Cruz: Yes, but it was weird.

Soma Cruz: I didn't finish him. But he died anyway.

Soma Cruz: A new ability? What?
Yoko Belnades: So, the power of dominance lets you control the souls of
               monsters, right?
Soma Cruz: Right.
Yoko Belnades: So I thought I could use magic to draw the monster souls out
               and use them.
Soma Cruz: You mean release the souls?
Yoko Belnades: Something like that. Of course, I would need your cooperation,
               Soma. And it's not something that's easy to do.
Soma Cruz: So how do you plan to use these freed souls?
Yoko Belnades: Well, I can fuse the freed souls with a weapon, thus creating a
               new weapon. The souls you use will be lost, though.
Soma Cruz: Can you even do that?
Yoko Belnades: That's rather rude of you to ask! I may not look the part, but
               I am considered an exceptional spell caster. Just tell me if
               you need something. I'll prove it to you.
Soma Cruz: Okay, then.
Yoko Belnades: Oh, and by applying my ability, I may be able to reduce the
               souls used. I'm not sure if you'll need it, but just keep that
               in mind.
Soma Cruz: Got it.
Yoko Belnades: So, may I help you with anything today?

Hammer: Hey, Soma! Listen to this.

Hammer: Today, you know, Yoko and me, our eyes met.

Hammer: Yoko flashed a smile at me. That lady's in love with me, I tell ya.

Hammer: A few days ago, Yoko waved hi to me.

Soma Cruz: Aha. Good for you...
Hammer: I'm on a roll here! Everything's on special today.

Hammer: Oh, man...

Hammer: Yeah, yeah, Julius. He seems to come around to see Yoko a lot.

Hammer: Uh... You're right! I'm letting my mind get the better of me.
        Man, gotta snap out of it! Anyway, how can I help ya today?

Hammer: Soma. Did that guy come by?
Soma Cruz: What guy?
Hammer: You know. That Arikado guy.
Soma Cruz: Oh, yeah. He's supposed to be keeping me under watch.
Hammer: You don't have it so easy, do you? But, eh, onto bigger things. I
        trust Yoko and all, but that "pretty boy," Arikado. You think she
        likes him?
Soma Cruz: Yes, but Arikado doesn't seem to be interested in anyone.
Hammer: Yeah, that's true.
Hammer: You have to love and be loved in return, huh...
Hammer: Eh, enough of that! Let's talk business.

Hammer: Hey, Soma...
Soma Cruz: What's wrong?
Hammer: I can kinda understand, but...don't you think it's a little too
        frequent?
Soma Cruz: What is?
Hammer: Julius. You know, how often he comes to see Yoko.
Soma Cruz: It's their job. They have to keep in touch.
Hammer: Well, I get that, but... A little age gap doesn't get in the way of
        love.
Soma Cruz: You're imagining things.
           Yoko said that Julius is just a business partner.
           (She didn't really, but...)
Hammer: Yeah, yeah, I get it. That's okay, then. Anyway, how can I help ya
        today?

Hammer: Hey, Soma. Y-Y-Yoko!
Soma Cruz: What? Is something wrong with Yoko?
Hammer: R-Right in front of my shop!
Soma Cruz: Yeah, Yoko's waiting to hear back from Julius.
Hammer: Hah? You knew she was here and didn't tell me?
Soma Cruz: Yeah.
Hammer: Well, what's wrong with ya, pal?!
Soma Cruz: I was about to tell you, but...
Hammer: Hmph. Well, anyway.
        This brings the two of us a lot closer, heheh.
Soma Cruz: (As if you have a chance...)
Hammer: Huh? Did ya say somethin'?
Soma Cruz: Uh, no. Oh, yeah. Anything new on sale?
Hammer: Oh. Well, let's take a look.

Hammer: Hey, welcome. So whadaya think? Not a bad shop, hey?
Soma Cruz: Of all the weirdest places to set up a shop...
Hammer: Have a look around and don't be so cheap!

Hammer: Yoko's in the area. I saw her earlier. She must've come after me.
Soma Cruz: That's not it.
Hammer: Geez! You sure are quick to put a man down, aren't ya?
Soma Cruz: She's here to investigate this cult, she said.
Hammer: Well, whatever the case, I can tell you I'm a lot more motivated this
        time.
Soma Cruz: (Didn't you come to back me up?)
Hammer: Anyway, look around and buy somethin' already!

Hammer: Soma? You came at the right time.
Soma Cruz: ?
Hammer: I just got a new magazine in today, "UMA News." It's about real
        monsters. I think it's got news about this area, too. It's gotta be
        good.
Soma Cruz: I'll buy it if I feel like it.
Hammer: Hey, but watch out. Don't you dare read it in my shop. These things
        sell info. If you look at it for free, it's the same as stealing.
Soma Cruz: I know that.
Hammer: Okay, as long as you get that through your head. It's released every
        so often, so check in to see if a new issue's arrived.

The vampire once feared as the dark lord. Resurrected many times, he waged a
long and brutal war against the Belmont clan. In 1999, he was finally defeated
for good, thus putting an end to his legacy as the dark lord.

Soma Cruz
The rebirth of Dracula, he has the ability to dominate the souls of monsters
and use their powers as his own. A year ago, he learned that he was destined
to become the dark lord. However, he overcame the chaos that raged within and
escaped that fate.

-------------------------------------Mina-------------------------------------

Mina Hakuba
Soma's lifelong friend and the sole daughter of the Hakuba Shrine's priest. A
year earlier, she and Soma had gotten trapped within Dracula's Castle, which
in turn was sealed within a solar eclipse. While she has no special abilities,
she is most trusted by Soma.

------------------------------------Julius------------------------------------

Julius Belmont
A descendant of a clan of vampire hunters, he wields a generations-old whip
named "Vampire Killer." He lost his memory when he defeated Dracula in 1999,
and only regained it during last year's incident. He now assists the Church in
their undertakings.

-----------------------------------Arikado------------------------------------

Genya Arikado
A member of a top-secret Japanese government agency. Shrouded in mystery, his
true identity is known but to a handful of people. Although he is strikingly
beautiful, his cold and detached demeanor makes him difficult to approach.

-----------------------------------Alucard------------------------------------

Adrian Fahrenheit Tepes
The son of Dracula and Genya Arikado's identity. He took to sleep in 1476
after defeating his own father and awakened in 1797 to aid the Belmonts. He
has sealed his own power to prevent Dracula's return. He hopes to stop Soma,
who has Dracula's soul, from becoming the dark lord.

Yoko Belnades
A witch belonging to the Church and an expert at secretly disposing dark
beings that threaten humans. She is a descendant of a clan that helped defeat
Dracula in 1476. She is friendly and nosy. Long acquainted with the Hakubas,
she is like an older sister to Mina.

------------------------------------Hammer------------------------------------

Now a merchant, he retired from the military because of last year's incident.
While he looks rough and resolute, he is actually aimless and irresponsible.
He acts as an information broker through his shady business connections. He is
hopelessly in love with Yoko.

------------------------------The Battle of 1999------------------------------

The battle that permanently destroyed Dracula. Nostradamus's prediction of the
King of Terror was for Dracula's resurrection. However, the priest of the
Hakuba Shrine sealed his castle within a solar eclipse, cutting Dracula's soul
from his power and thus freeing it from the chains of destiny.

-----------------------------------The Cult-----------------------------------

A religious cult headed by the priest Celia Fortner. Its formal name is
"With Light." It preaches that for God to be absolute good, there must be a
being of absolute darkness. Rather than revering a dark lord, it believes in
its presence, and reveres God out of fear of the dark lord.

---------------------------------Chrono Mage----------------------------------

A monster that lurked within Dracula's Castle when it was sealed inside the
solar eclipse last year. Possessing the ability to control time, it had tried
to impede Soma's progress. It is close friends with Zephyr.

------------------------------------Graham------------------------------------

Graham Jones
A man who was convinced he was Dracula's heir. He was born at the same exact
time as Dracula's downfall in 1999. He was defeated by Soma in Dracula's
Castle last year. It was his failed attempt, however, that gave Celia the idea
of creating a new dark lord.

----------------------------The Power of Dominance----------------------------

Soma Cruz's ability which lets him absorb the souls of monsters he has
defeated and use their powers as his own. The so-called Tactical Souls come in
four types: Ability, Bullet, Guardian, and Enchant, each with different
attributes.

--------------------------The Dark Lord's Candidates--------------------------

Humans who were born at the same time as Dracula's downfall. Imbued with a
powerful, dark energy released by Dracula upon his death, they possess
supernatural abilities. For that reason, they are often feared and loathed by
ordinary people.

------------------------------Last Year's Battle------------------------------

As had been predicted, in 2035, Dracula's Castle emerged from a solar eclipse
in Japan. Its dark appeal lured humans to serve as its keeper. Soma defeated
Graham Jones, who had believed himself to be the Castle's heir, but then
realized he himself was the heir. He was saved only by his friends' efforts.

---------------------------------Bullet Souls---------------------------------

A type of Tactical Soul that is red in color. Use magic power to execute
projectile-type spells. These spells are most effective against monsters that
are tough to beat with weapons. Press (^) on the +Control Pad and the (Y) to
execute the selected spell.

--------------------------------Guardian Souls--------------------------------

A type of Tactical Soul that is blue in color. They contain spells that
steadily consume magic power while in effect. There are two kinds, those that
go into effect while the (R) is pressed, and those that are switched on and
off using the (R).

--------------------------------Enchant Souls---------------------------------

A type of Tactical Soul that is yellow in color. They contain spells that come
into effect while they are equipped. They do not require magic power--they
only need to be equipped to work. They are primarily used as status boosters
rather than providing attack skills.

--------------------------------Ability Souls---------------------------------

A type of Tactical Soul that is silver in color. They take effect just by
having them in possession, and do not consume magic power. Many of them are
for aiding movement, such as the Back Dash. Some are triggered using the (L).

-----------------------------Doppelganger (Soul)------------------------------

An Ability-type soul that enables the switching of two kinds of equipment by
pressing the (X). The two pieces of equipment are identified as "A" and "B" on
the gauge at the top of the screen. By respectively assigning equipment for
movement and fighting, progress can be made more smoothly.

---------------------------------Doppelganger---------------------------------

A monster that cleverly mimics people to strike down unsuspecting victims.
Celia used this monster to create a fake Mina in an effort to awaken the dark
lord within Soma. Her treachery was thwarted, albeit just barely, by the quick
actions of Arikado.

--------------------------------Vampire Killer--------------------------------

A whip that destroys all that is associated with the dark creatures of the
night. As a result of an ancient blood pact, it can only be used by a Belmont.
Its power was temporarily weakened last year when Soma broke free of his
destiny as the dark lord. However, its potent power has not been entirely
lost.

-------------------------------Dracula's Castle-------------------------------

The symbol of Dracula's dark power, its appearance coincides with Dracula's
resurrection. The priest of the Hakuba Shrine had sealed it in a solar eclipse
in 1999. Then, during the solar eclipse of 2035, it sought a new master, but
failed. Now, its dark power awaits the rise of a new dark lord...

                               VI. Hidden Text

These are pieces of text that never made it into the final version of the
game, but were left in the ROM anyway. I have put in my own commentary on what
the text means.

---------------------------Yoko and the Piano room----------------------------

Yoko Belnades: He says that keyboards let you find hidden objects by playing
               notes in sequence. He didn't say what the patterns were,
               though.

Bmecoli: This is obviously a hint for what the piano was originally planned
for. Whether or not you can still get those items still remains a mystery
(still very unlikely though, so don't get your hopes up).

Julius Belmont: You. Why are you here?
Hammer: Why? I'm here for Soma! My man's in trouble, I tell ya!
Julius Belmont: But it's of no concern to you.
Hammer: Heck yeah, it is!
        Soma's my pal, after all. Laying his life on the line for a pal...
        That's what a man does.
Julius Belmont: Wrong.
                An ordinary human is no match for a foe like this.
                Being a man has nothing to do with it.
Hammer: Hey, bud, I served in the military! I know weapons a whole lot better
        than you! And I'd like to think I've got enough sense to retreat if it
        gets too crazy.
Julius Belmont: Fine, then. But if you ever fear for your life, get out
                immediately, understood?
Hammer: Loud and clear. You have my word.

Hammer: Soma!! What's the matter, huh? Snap out of it!
Soma Cruz: ...
Hammer: Damn it!

Bmecoli: At one point during development, they were planning on adding Hammer
as one of the playable characters from Julius mode.  The first section of text
would more than likely be Julius finding Hammer (at the shop?) and afterwards
he would join you.  The second section of text is of course what Hammer
would've said when he confronted Soma (which is quite amusing in my opinion). 
Unfortunately, they never got much farther than the text.  Sprite dumping
shows that there are no battle sprites for Hammer. In other words, even
though the text is there, there will never be a way for Hammer to be playable
in this game.

                                   VIII. FAQ

Q. Why did you decide to do this?

A. I thought that since some other RPGs have scripts I thought that Dawn of
Sorrow deserved one since I wanted to make a guide while finding anything
secret in the game, so now it's here :)

Q. Did you go through the game and type it all yourself?

A. Hehe, no.  I went through the ROM file and dumped the text out. Then,
I had to separate all of the text into sections to make it easier to work
with. After that I organized it into a more logical format.  I also added
"action scripts" so that the plot is easier to follow.

Q. How did you find the text? 

A. I did some simple text searching at first and I found it. Even though the 
text isn't stored in ASCII, the lower case letters in the game are stored in
the exact same location as upper case ASCII.

Q. What tools did you use to dump the script?

A. Translhextion.  Great hex editing/viewing program specially designed for
rom hacking.  Oh yeah and metapad for editing.

Q. I have a hex editor and when I look at the text in the file there's no
character names or numbers and the punctuation is messed up.  What gives?

A. you will need a table file and a hex editor that supports table files in
order to view the text correctly.

Q. Can you give me one?

Q. Hey, could you do <x game> for me?

A. It depends on:
1. If I've played it
2. If I will ever play it
3. If it can be easily done.

If it's an RPG I've already played, then maybe.  If it's an RPG I haven't
gotten to yet, then no.  Also if I can't figure out where/how the text is
stored, then you're on your own ;/

Q. Could you teach me how to dump text from <x game>

A. I would, but there are so many text hacking docs out there right now I'd
be wasting my time. Check romhacking.org, they have plenty of resources to
grab.

Q. Hey! there's <insert spelling or grammar mistake> here in the script!

A. And?  Please note I changed nothing in the script (except for added
punctuation for readability). Any errors would be found in game. Go ahead, 
look :)

Q. Hey! there's <insert spelling or grammar mistake> somewhere else!

A. Alrighty, we'll fix it in the next release.

Q. Hey, Yoko/Hammer never said that!

A. Really? Let me know and I'll put it in the hidden text section.

Q. What's the deal with all the unneeded actions.

A. Eh, there are bytes in the dialogue that let the game know to stop
displaying text and run a script (move a character, camera, etc) I made a note
of this, and added a tag whenever it happened in the dump.  Then I played the
game, filling in what happens.  If people complain, I'll remove them.

Q. Your seal drawing tutorial is herd to follow, what gives?

A. hey I tried my best there, OK? If you can do better, email me with the
revised version and I'll add it and give you credit

A. No, I did not. Honest. I still might have used your guide for reference.
