1. Every time I duel a spirit after I win, a line of dashes comes up. I know the odds are small that a spirit will join you but am I supposed to do anything else after the duel except hit the touchscreen? Also, how will I know when a spirit joins me after I defeat it; right now, I am on level 10 and only have Jerry Beans Man from the original spirit encounter?
2. How do you get the ship card packs to come back if you don't score an 80% or higher on the exam?

1. No after you duel a spirit you can only hope you acquire it. After defeating it in a duel you can only hope.
2. The ship/sub packs have nothing to do with your test scores they come biweekly I believe. The only reward you get from exams is the title of study king if you get all questions correct.
