Could someone please tell me how to upgrade the chefs fire so I can get the chisle to make the boat also dose anyone know how to get the knife.

When the chef tells you he wants his fire pit upgraded you will see what items you need for the FIRST upgrade. Gather those items and return to the chef's fire pit. Click on the fire pit and you'll get the option to upgrade his fire. Once you've done the upgrade, start the fire and then go talk to the chef. He should give you the the chisel at that point.
Later in the game you'll be asked to do another upgrade for him, but you don't need to worry about that yet.
