Landonfleury is wrong! You go to the little island in the corner where the pole is, on Bannana Island, and back up a bit. You have to kill all the enemies first though. Get your boomarang and go over the water, the mermaid should be there. If not move back further. When you hit her just choose the answer you think is right and let her talk. Then go to your ship driver, Lineback, and talk to him. He says something about a girl comeing to talk to him then vanashing. Then go to the old geezer in the small hut, Wayfarer, and talk to him. The mermaid is in the small pool and is happy, while the Wayfarer wants to give you a present, the fishing rod. If he doesn't give it to you, talk to him again. He WILL give it to you.
