I have just beat Bowser for the first time and he gives me a key after I beat him.What is this key for.

The key is for the door to the basement, where there are many new areas to explore.

You use the key that you have found and you either go to the mini game area or you got through the wood doors and down the big staircase into the basement.

The key is for the locked door. To get there, go to the door beside Cool, Cool Mountain and go down the stairs, then you'll see a door with a keyhole, approach the door, and you will use the key and open it. From there you advance to the next paintings and continue collecting stars.
