No you're supposed to ground pound, dive,punch or kick him when boo is not invisible.
No, he's impossible to catch. But if you find the biggest Boo in the courtyard, ground-pound or attack him in another way (not using Yoshi) while he's solid, you'll find a cage. Run up to it and enjoy Big Boo's Haunt!
