Question for Super Mario 64 DS

Hi I've tried deleting all saved data on game as it was preowned and it doesnt seem to work the game keeps starting with the 23 stars that was on there. Also tried starting the game by pressing a+b+x+y l+r and it says all game data erased. So I start new game play for a bit then save and quit. When I start again I'm back with the 23 stars I had originally any help please

Try going on the 2 files that are not used. Then if only one has 23 stars, then maybe the others will not.
