When you have around 30 stars go into the castle courtyard opposite the entrance to the basement. One of the boos has the portal to the level inside him. Kill him and jump into the portal.

Go into on of the brown doors in the lobby of the castle. Scare away the Big Boo you see and follow it to Boo's Courtyard. Ground-stomp/pound all Boos that get in your way. Ground-stomp/pound all of them except the Big Boo for a Secret Star. Then ground-stomp/pound the Big Boo to get the portal thing to Boo's castle. Just walk into it to minimize and jump through the portal thing. You'll reach Big Boo's Haunt, not castle. When you get there, be aware that a spider is near you.
