Question for Super Mario 64 DS

When you are Mario in Bob-omb battlefield you get the big mushroom and then run through things and numbers show, What are they for?

The number tells you how many objects/enemies you have smashed. After you smash 7 objects, you will get 1-Ups for every object you destroy instead of a number.
