I cannot seem to get past the Atlantis stage where spongebob is carrying a big heavy rock thing across the platforms. Is there some kind of trick to throw it across the large gap? Thanks!

Run and throw. That should make it go farther.
Try this: when you get to a large gap, fall and throw it. When you come back up it should be on the next platform. Also, since spongebob throws far and patrick throws high, you'll need patrick.
The thing is, when you throw OBJECTS, there is one rule applying to all characters. If you release 'R' when you are not walking, you throw high, but if you release 'R' while still walking (I.e. Holding a button on the D-Pad), you throw far. Hope this helped!
