I killed the graemon monster in the first cave, then realized that there was a treasure hunt. Now when I go to the site where the book for the treasure hunt is supposed to be, all I get is the comment that it seems like something should be there. Did I miss out on something important? Should I start all over again? Will I get another chance?

To start the hunt you have to talk to Mayor Godwin in the town square then you go to the cave and get the book.
Uh, no, I don't think there should be anything wrong. You are allowed to kill the Greater Daemon as soon as possible. It shouldn't have any effect on the treasure hunt. Yes, you will get another treasure hunt next year, but I doubt it will be in the same spot. --Gamez_Freak--
The good thing about the treasure hunt is the book is always in the same spot and on the day you have to talk to the mayor and then go find the book
