Question for Professor Layton and the Last Specter

When in the Tower searching for Arianna, what is the answer to 'trial by fire'? To light the four tourches I used the order 4,1,2,3 which was on the wall on the upper level but that does not work and you cannot exit until this puzle has been completed. I am stuck, please help.

Tap the 2nd arch 1st, the 3rd arch 2nd, the 4th arch 2nd, and the 1st arch 4th. They will stay lit

Don't think of the numbers as "1,2,3,4" Think of them as 1st 2nd 3rd 4th, then the sequence "4,1,2,3" makes sense. Light the second torch from the left 1st, the third torch from the left 2nd, etc... I hope that helps with the logic.

Light the torches in the following order:
1. Light the second to left torch.
2. Light the second to right torch.
3. Light the far right torch.
4. Light the far left torch.

Answer is 2 3 4 1 It's weird, but true. Just click the 2nd one 1st, 3rd one 2nd, 4th one 3rd, and 1st one last. Sorry if that sounded confusing.
