You will know when because pony will not ride very well, and will start to get sick if left out in rain for 2 weeks, and your pony will be obstinate and want to sleep all time.

..but it doesn't rain in this game. Do you mean being left out in the FIELD for 2 days?

I have the DS version of Pony Friends 2 and I've noticed that my ponies don't really show any signs of needing to be retired, however, they do get slower on races and trail rides. But I have noticed that this happens with newer ponies too.
