What's a friend code? And how do I get one? What's it good for?

A friend code is a thing where you have numbers and you can battle online with it and exchange it you have to buy a usb cable though

A friend code is a really long number which is specific to your Pokemon game cartridge. It represents you essentially. Share it with a friend, who shares theres with you and will be able to trade or battle with them as long as your DS's are within wireless range ~65 feet. You can find your friend code on your pal pad, which is located in the key items pocket of your bag. Its good if you have a lot of friends with this game, but of little to no use if you know just about no one else who has the same game, like me.
