I know that I have a partner throughout the game, but how do I decide who it will be? Is it based on what their type is compared to mine, or is it just randomly picked?

What it is, you answer the questions and then you pick what the other Pokemon is, but it can't be the same type as you are, like if your a water type Pokemon then your partner can't be a water type, and you be the starter Pokemon from all the Pokemon games for the game boy.
You get a list of the ones you can choose, and you pick one.

It's not randomly picked. You get to choose the Pokemon you get. But It can't be the same type.
You must choose it from the list once you are told what Pokemon you will be.
