Uh well, when you start the game you'll be asked to answer some questions. They may sound silly, but it will help you determine your personality and a Pkmn will be assigned to you. You can choose your partner tho. If you don't like the Pkmn you got, there's a guide with the questions and answers so you will be able to get the one you want. Hope this helps.

Well I would pick torchic since it's the only Pokemon to be a fire and fighing when it evolves.

Wow, well if you want my opinion, cyndaquil, totodile, or any of the Hoenn starters are good. I also recommend machop or cubone. Those are good too. But picking your main character all depends on luck. You can pick your partner yourself though.

I recremend squirtle and charmander because well I own with those 2 both lvl 100 and I've beaten the game 3 times with them and yes beating the game does get boring
