In-game, you get crappy items, mainly berries.
If you use it in Wi-Fi, there's a chance you'll get pretty good items. So you want your Pokemon to hold a pretty bad item to swap with the opponent, whether they use it, or you use it. A Sitrus berry or something is better than a leftovers. Do NOT make your Pokemon hold a rare item/berry as there is a chance that the opponent could make use of it.

I would say the Sticky Barb. It lowers the HP of the holder every turn. The bad thing about it is that it may re-attatch to your Pokemon, so watch out for that. There's also the Life Orb. It lowers the HP of the holder, but it also boosts the power of attacks. The good thing is it won't come back to your pokemon.

Your question had me thinking for a minute. There are actually a lot depending on what type of trainer you are. If you don't like using the stat boosters, those are good. If you like training your Pokemon without the added boost, then the experience share or a rare candy would be good, too. So, it really depends on that one thing.

Flam orb, life orb and toxic orb, they are all really bad for your Pokemon, but if the opponent has one equipped, he'll die really fast.
