I've heard that in order to trade you have to have your friend's code or something. Why would all the other games with wifi not need that and this one would? I read on Nintendo.com that it's like all the other games and you can play everybody. So what's the deal with this?

Yeah, you need to swap Friend Codes, or if you're within 30 Feet you can trade, it's kinda weird and I'd wonder the same thing too.
You CAN trade with EVERYONE "WORLD-WIDE" by "GLOBAL TRADE STATION" AKA "GTS" you don't need a friend code to "trade only" because why else would there be a Pokemon center with a regular trade, but then a building with "GLOBAL" trade.
If you are not in the range of the DS's wireless capabilities, then you will need a Friend Code. However if you and your friend are in the same room, you don't need it. The Friend Codes are mainly used for trading and battling people around the country.
