You cannot release your pokemon to walk besides you. Sorry. But, you can walk with a pokemon in amity square. Amity square can be found in Hearthome City.

Well you have too scroll with it theres a choice pikachu is the most common so you need to go to heartrome city and scroll with it sometimes it holds something you need to press a on it to check its usally poffins

Pokemon will not walk beside you in Pokemon Diamond Pearl or Platinum.
