The only way I know how is to move in different directions very rapidly. My preferred directions were always up, right, down, left, and repeat several times, but there are other ways to do it. But I think you get the jist of what I'm saying.

Press the buttons on the D-pad repeatedly. The up, down, left, and right buttons. In just a couple seconds, you will get yourself out of the mud.
