In order to get other Pokemon Trainer's friend codes, you must either see them so that you can put them down, or they will have to give them to you. Sometimes after you battle someone, it will ask if you want to add them to your friend's list. If you select the 'Yes' option then you will get their friend code written down so that you can battle them whenever they are on. It will sometimes ask you this before the battle, but I think that that is only when you are battling someone in a local area, or someone that is actually in front of you battling. If you need some Trainer's friend codes to help get you started battling, then go to the Pokemon Diamond Forums and look at the Fired Code topic.

You can put it in manually if you have a pal pad you just put there name in and then there friend code or after you battle them it might ask you if you want to register them.
