The odds of finding one are 1/8192, so it's really rare.
This doesn't mean you'll find one on your 8192nd battle though. So it could take you maybe 7 battles to find one, or maybe even 35,814 battles.
It's not based on how long you play, there is a 1 in 8193 chance of finding a shiny Pokemon without a cheat.
It's not based on how long you play the game. There's even a chance that your starter Pokemon can be shiny. There's a shiny version of every Pokemon, as you probably know. The chances of running into a shiny version of that specific is very slim, however; more like 1/9000. So, running into a shiny version of ANY Pokemon is a pain, and VERY VERY rare.
It is very rare to find a shiny pokemon. And it does not take a certain time. You will just randomely find a shiny Pokemon in one of your battles if your lucky. I have a shiny medidite because I was just walking around in the wild. It doesn not take a certain amount of time.
