How am I supposed to apply cheats with numbers in the code when all I is x,y,b,a?

I think the cheats your thinking of are Action Replay codes. To use those cheats, you have to have an action replay. You can probably buy one somewhere online, or you can borrow one from someone if you know someone with one.
