Once you defeat the Fourth Member of the Elite Four, you can battle Alder. As you approach Alder, you find out N has already defeated him. After this, N's Castle rises from the ground. At the end of N's Castle, N waits for you. Before you battle N, you have a chance to battle/catch Reshiram.

After you beat the four memebers of the elite four. You expect to find Alder. But N of team plasma has already beat him so instead of facing Alder you face N. (To bad N only gets to be champion for 10 minutes.) Just before you battle him, the light stone will flash and Reshiram will appear. You get a chance to battle him before you battle N.

The only ways to fight Alder BEFORE catching Reshiram are to cheat or have every box in the PC full. You have to catch Reshiram LONG before you have a chance to fight Alder.
Don't cheat, and you'll catch Reshiram long before you fight Alder.
