Question for New Super Mario Bros

How do I save the levels I've completed. I don't turn the game off, but I do select continue when I run out of lives, then all the coins I got disappear, then I have to do all levels again to get the same coins. Very frustrating, why play?

When you run out of lives (it's never happened to me, I'm always well stocked) you start over because you've never used your star coins. You know the little mushroom houses along the sides of the "road"? You know, the ones that have a little sign that have "5" written on them in front? Well when you are on a location (for lack of a better word) press the arrow in the direction of he mushroom house and if you have at least 5 star coins, it will let you through. Then a little black box will pop up that says "Save?" "yes, no" . Then you pick yes (of course) and it saves.

What if you have opened all the "houses" that have the 5 coins sign in front of them? All the castles have been won (but not all star coins collected in them). Is there any other way to save progress??
