How do you beat the first castle? I have spent countless time on beating the Koopa but is having no luck. Is there some way to hit him with the shell or do I have to knock him off?

You could use fireball mario and keep throwing them and he will die

Throwing the shell or using fire mario will work, but the shell is the more......"fun" one
Jump on the shell, hit baby bowser with it, and jump or ground pound him.

You need to use the special fire Mario/Luigi to defeat him.
